Hi

I am getting my old tapes out and putting them onto my computer as the tapes will soon brake! I bought a headphone to headphone plug and am using cool edit pro 2 for recording. But when I play back the audio their is a crackling noise that no matter what I do I can't get rid of! Is it because it's on the tapes in which case I can't get rid of it? Or is their a way I can eliminate it?
Thanks!

Tapes have background analogue hiss. Old tapes will have it really bad. But cooledit has some nice noise reduction features like hiss removal. Give them a blast and see how it turns out.

If you have nero wave editor, i find that is the best and it also has special features for importing and removing tape crackle and clicks. If you use nero burning rom then youll probably have it.

Virtually any noise removal plugin will do the trick. Generally, it'll take a sample of "silence" where all you here is the crackle, and then it'll take that and use it to remove the crackle from the rest of the recording. I know for a fact that Audacity (free) comes with a good noise removal plug, but if you wanna stick with whatever you've got, well, google is only a step away...
