I recently bought my first car, and today I took my driver's test and passed it on the first try! I still can't believe it. I will actually have a car when I'm at school this year, so I can get a second job. I already have a job as the chief copy editor for the newspaper, but I need something else to help my pay back my dad and brother. I had to borrow $800 from them for the car and registration (Totally worth it though, this car was a steal). But the good news is that insurance is a lot cheaper than I thought it would be, and my car gets good gas mileage, in the upper 20's miles per gallon. I'm so happy!

It's a 1994 Oldsmobile Achieva. 117k miles, working AC, power locks and windows too. I haven't even driven it yet though, and I already put in now 6x9's in the back and am in the process of hooking up my sub...I can't wait. I finally have something new to play with!

Anyone else get there first car recently?

a/c in your first car? man, you're spoiled! looks in good shape too. You'll have to let us know if it breaks down within the first few weeks.

This isnt my car exactly, but its the same year make and model. Got hit a few times and now it's in a junkyard in Sacramento, but it was a sexy and beautiful car while it lasted.

i passed my test back before the summer started, and did my pass plus (thing we have in britain to give you extra training and hence lower your insurance). problem is the insurance, its still to expensive for me to either get insured on mums car or my grandads, hence i havent driven at all since my pass plus so i'm all outta practice

except of course when me and some mates went to the beach, and one of them let me do donuts in the sand in his car

Congrats, Xander. I got my first truck about 10 months ago (never had me a car.)

Around here, you'd be crazy not to have a/c in your car. You can do just fine without a heater, however.

Nice first car man. I'd save up for new wheels or drop it down though. Looks like it's riding a bit too high.

I don't have a picture but something like this this was my first car.

It was used of course. wound up trading for a new Camero Z-28. Wish I had never done that. That thing was tough on tires (front).

That is a nice first car by the way. congrats.

My first car (that was actually mine):

It had a bad tendency to push in turns. that caused the front tires to slide a little and cupping wear in the tread. I was younger then and I am sure I drove it a little to hard. The only saving grace is that I never directly bought tires for the car.

Every time they got bad, The car got stolen. That is one sick feeling when you come out of a store and don't have a car waiting for you.

Here's the evolution of my car ownership. Still working my way up slowly, but its an expensive business, especially when you've been a student all your life. None of these are actual photos of my cars, just the same makes

Piece of crap 1.2i Nova, with only 4 gears, but mine was in red. This was eventually written off while I was in bed sleeping by a guy driving a flatbed truck while talking on his mobile phone who just basically smashed it into tiny pieces as it sat innocently outside my house.

Slightly better, yet still tacky 1.2 Clio Oasis, but mine was in blue. This eventually got broken into and had the stereo nabbed. Luckily the thief left all the sub, amp, 7x10s in the back. I finally got sick of it, especially with the passenger door lock hanging out where I hadn't got it fixed.

Current car is almost identical to the civic coupe on the right, except for different wheels. So far the only bad thing in this one was being side swiped on the motorway by some dude cutting across the hatching on a slip road. Put me into a fishtail which I just about got out of. If you're all really nice and buy Claymore Island when it's done and get everyone else you know to buy it, you might help me finally get someone else.

So Xander, you've definitely got a head start on me. I've been driving for 7 years!

Oops, I forgot to mention how much it actually cost me. The car was $1200. I had to borrow $700 from my brother and dad. Then I had to borrow a little more to pay for the plates and registration.

I know how lucky I am to get this nice of a car. I looked at a lot of junkers before I actually found this. I bought it the same day that I saw it in the newspaper...

I really had no choice as to waiting to find anything better...I have to get an internship job next summer, and will need a car for that. So I'm just glad to get something.

I drove around today (not just for fun, I had some stuff I needed to get taken care of) and estimated that I got about 30 miles per gallon average between the city and highway, so I'm happy with that.

I wish I could find pics of my last car. Gives a good idea of what happens at 70mph when a deer runs into the side of you.

My first car was awsome. It was a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. In white. It ruled. Then I got a 99 Grand Prix GTP (the supercharged model)!!! It was so fast. I sold it to get a bike. I should be picking up the bike next week.

Wrecking a car is NEVER fun! The Jeep Liberty I have now is actually my second one. My first one got T-boned in an intersection.

Heres the story. I was going through and intersection going about 45 and there was a white grand prix next to me. A guy in a black GMC pickup ran the red light and hit the front left quarter panel of the grand prix doing about 50. It hit me and flipped me over onto the right side of my car where I slid about 60 feet through the intersection. I was hurt a bit but after all that kinetic energy, I was unhurt from the collision... it was the hanging from the seatbelt for 30 minutes until the paramedics could figure out a way to get me out is how I got bruised and fractured my sturnum. My door was crushed, and the other door was against the pavement.

I still have the photos of my car up on my site if you want to take a look.

http://www.battlecraft42.com/wreck/my_wrecked_jeep_liberty.htm

Luckily I had full coverage on my insurance and Gieco had me a check for a new one and within 3 days I was in another Jeep Liberty.

The moral of the story... Always keep your insurance up to date and dont let it lapse! You never know when some punk kid driving his bosses truck might run a red light and hit you because he's paying more attention to the stereo than he's paying to the road.

Sorry to hear what happened, I've been t-boned before as well, but i'd be willing to bet he was damn well aware of what he was doing =) Us kids like to have a good time, right?

I had the exact same thing, it was black. After the deer I got a 2000 white gtp, 2dr instead of 4dr this time. Can't wait til I remove that supercharger and put in the turbo!

p.s. Intense-Racing here in town has a grand prix doing 1/4 mile times in about 9.6sec.

My 80 Thunderbird was a low end model; in brown with a golden brown interior. My dad found it and helped me with a down payment. It seemed like a pretty good deal back in 83-84.

It was traded because I was/am stupid. That car was still in real good shape, but I was young and wanted a flashier car.

Look at me know. I own a 96 Ford Thunderbird (because I loved the color and the price was right.) and a 2002 Honda Civic (bought for work and now the wife drives it.)

Well, I don't think it was a bad decision. My dad is a mechanic, and he was helping me look. The situation was getting desperate, and this was a lucky break. We checked it out first, drove it around and whatever. The people selling it were pretty loaded, and were just trying to get rid of it because they were getting a new car. Other people were interested, so if we hadn't bought it, it would have been a goner. I haven't had a problem yet, except when we were playing with the stereo for too long without having the car running and drained the battery...but don't worry, it's not a bad battery. I charged it and haven't had a problem since.

My dad helped me get the sub all hooked up, so now I just need new 4x6's for the front. I'm going to an electronics liquidation sale tomorrow to see what I can find. Hopefully I can get something so I won't have any crappy stock speakers left in the car. I can't bear the thought of having untreated flimsy paper cones on my speakers...
