Does anyone know of a website where you can upload stories that you've written and people can purchase said stories to read them if they feel so inclined?

I have an idea for a long series of short stories, told in "episodes" like on a television show. I'd love to charge people for each episode, or for each season, with the first episode free to give people an idea of if they'd like it. If a site like this doesn't exist, maybe we could get a few wannabe "indie" authors like me together and create it Is this a potentially cool idea, or the worst idea I've ever had?

YouBookTube?

Yeah.

I know you can use Lulu.com for that.

Thanks, I'll check that out

edit: While lulu.com is totally awesome, I was thinking more along the lines of being published over the net, like on a website. Does anyone know of a site like that?

Well, you can sell PDFs...

I've been meaning to get into the indie publishing biz, and so I COULD make a site like that... similar to the site I've already started making... aughh

would be neat I think. I'd write for it. I'd love to publish a chapter a week, each chapter acting as an "episode." If the story is good enough, it could turn a profit

I Don't see what kind of a website a online book will need.

A blank white page with black text would do...

but if it's going to generate any money whatsoever it has to be pretty, dunnit? And I'm incapable of making things pretty If I may quote Tony Soprano: "I got the Midas touch but in reverse, everythin' I touch, it turns to ____!" lol I can make mean boxes and circles in paint though my curse is that I feel like I know the contours of people and things really well, well enough to draw things in my head, but I can't apply it to paper (or a bitmap) as hard as I try. Even with a wacom tablet I'm just drawing bubbly-eyed stick figures

But the website isn't the problem--- the problem is with marketing and GETTING people to come to your site to see your book. That is the problem of the day.

But if I can figure out a way to get people to come to the website to see it, and the website is crap, they won't stay long but you bring up a great question: how in the world would I market this thing? Who would be interested in buying it (if anyone)?

Well, set up an online casino in your website and give out free cash prizes, that will work.

Probally the same people who by episodic games. Who knows, given that this whole episodic game thing hasn't died yet episodic books may very well be next.

Matt, I suggest attempting submissions to various magazines with your material (guaranteed pay) and if your stuff is good and you have time you can build a name for yourself then open your own site.

How much do magazines pay? The thing I'm thinking of is sort of "Realistic sci-fi," an event that very well could happen but hasn't yet... what magazines would I send that to? I dunno, I'm still wondering if it's even worth it. So many questions to answer about this. In my head it seems like an awesome idea, and as Merranvo pointed out, people pay for episode-based games. Before I even think about marketing I should try to gather some form of concept of how much each episode will cost. Then do the marketing stuff, figuring out how I could get the site public, then figure out the actual cost based on, I dunno, opinions of you guys and a few of my "rl" friends. Also, I don't think it's worth it going into this with only one author... maybe find a handful of other authors to kick-start it. My head is going in a zillion directions on this lol.

Never forget that this is all assuming your book is damn good. They might not even takt the story, which means all that's left is starting your own site.

What'd be cool, would be a 'Steam' for books - you download the software, it keeps uptodate with what new episodes and series' are out and lets you securely buy them and downloads them for you.
It'd be very nice for comics too, I'd imagine.

Tink's idea is tops. That could take digital reading to a whole new level. The problem I think is finding talented authors who would devote enough time to it, but if it were to use pre-written stuff, that would be awesome.

I definitely won't try this until I've written the first episode, posted it here, and had you all rip it to pieces and tell me if it's worth anything at all. If the story sucks, no one will be interested in buying it. Also, I would give out the first "episode" for free on the website so people would know if they like the story and the writing style. Who knows, maybe that first story would "hook" enough people to make them want to buy more The biggest problem that I can foresee isn't writing the stories, or making the website, or even marketing it... it's finding more authors. The more authors I can find that are writing stories that people are interested in reading, the more money the site would make in that we'd offer more diversity to the people who visit. I don't think the site would take off with one series of stories... it would need 5+, or at least I assume it would.

This is an intriguing idea Matt. I would be interested in participating on the writer side... I've written multiple novels and short stories and this sounds like a fun project.

Defiantly before you even think about selling, you should (that is if you really are going to cotinue in episodes) Copyright your idea, because unless you want it to be some sort of free source writing where everyone continues your story where you left off, you defiantly don't want people stealing your idea.

Cocacola and Pepsi aren't that differnt. Deal with it.

Definitely. The story I'm going to do was copyrighted already, but I want to introduce new characters and all that, so a new copyright is probably needed.
