you can use wep encryption - most routers support it, have a look in you router settings, if its a web based config, which is most of em, then you will usually find it at 192.168.0.1, though some use diferent ones; then you put in the encryption on the router, then go round all the wireless clients inputting the encryption key and then no one without the encryption key will be able to access your network

WEP is fairly secure, but can be cracked over time using fairly user-friendly utilities. If you have the option of using WPA instead of WEP, use WPA. If not, WEP is far better than nothing and will keep 99% of people out.

Also, try and lock it down to the MAC address of the computer you're connecting with. A combination of WEP/WPA and ACL is fairly secure

Yeah, MAC filtering also helps quite a bit on security.

I can find it. I have a Mac program that'll find hidden SSIDs sometimes.

I use WPA, which is designed to replace WEP and fixes several security issues. So use it if you got it.

its an option in some routers - but it can be a pain, because windows won't always detect it; to be honest most people see that it is encrypted and think, owell i can't be bothered with that, and they will go on to your next door neighbours who's unencrypted

I had an XP machine that had trouble with a hidden ssid until I did all the latest windows updates. (minus the sp3)
