I like today's music. Kelly Clarkson and Gwen Stefani are good. Metal however has always been total garbage.

Nah, I meant every word. I'm a guy who listens to songs that sound good, rather than do I like the band or not (unless of course there's some extreme reason to hate the band, like inanimate object fornication).

Ask away.

Seriously, you get to the point of people saying things like "dude that music sucks and you must be a total idiot for liking it" where you just don't care anymore what people think or say.

It's not that Kelly Clarkson isn't "cool", it's the fact that her music sounds generic. Like it was produced in a factory warehouse, the one that spits out the cheese for all the backstreets, nsyncs, christinas and britneys out there. There's no soul. If it wasn't Kelly Clarkson it would be some other pretty face. I would be really surprised if she even has any input into her music. Of course not--- she's just a vessel with which the money machine stays alive.

It's a pity really. People like Kelly Clarkson, and even Christina Aguilera are good singers. It's just the stuff they sing is not on par with their singing ability.

Exactly. They could be progressing their talents and doing so much more, yet the money machine has a hold of them and wants them to stay right where they are. We don't hear any more Diana Ross's not because they don't exist, but because to allow any sort of creative or musical freedom wouldn't be in the best interests of the company. I do not listen to KC or CA not because I dislike them and think they lack talent, but simply because I would much rather listen to origian, by the artist works than songs that a producer writes for them to sing.

I would much rather listen to Beck, who has an average (some would say awful i.e. my dad) voice, because he has the talent to write his own music.

However, I'm a hypocrite that was as I enjoy listening to some opera singers singling the classics that are hundreds of years old.

cause it probably was produced in a warehouse. I believe their contract makes them sing whatever is given to them.

I think the last time I listened to what was mainstream music, according to MTV, the dire straits video was still on.

I'm with Jeku on this, Kelly Clarkson (and everyone else that "American Idol" has put forward) is a terrifyingly generic singer. No originality whatsoever. If she wrote her own songs and if I could actually tell her apart from all of the other watered-down singers in the pop culture gene pool I'd have some respect for her. I think the music industry needs to stop assembling talentless people from the parts of lesser wannabe singers and giving recording contracts to the girls with the blondest hair and the biggest chestal extremities (a new word!).

I stopped watching MTV when they stopped showing music. Do they even show videos anymore? It's all silly reality shows and hidden camera shows... they should just call it "Television Television" because what they're showing has absolutely nothing to do with music. And people pass MTV off to their younger siblings (and even their children nowadays) and make the younger people think that what they see on MTV is what's cool, and nothing else can BE cool. I'm telling you, Y2K killed the music industry. Once in a great while a band will release a good album, but it's quickly overlooked by the lipgloss junkies with no taste.

You are a complete idiot. Sure I like a little bit of Kelly Clarkson's music as well as Carrie Underwoods. (I like country music, what can I say?) Also, Clay Aiken isn't that bad either. And yet those that do win American are generic singers, I mean, they have to get pass that funny British guy Simon to win, I mean, I'd love to hear you sing, you probably can't but why are you knocking others for what talent they have. I mean, I have never knocked your programming skills.

You think the judges on American Idol are the know-all-end-all when it comes to who can sing? No, I can't sing, but there are FAR better singers around today, and anyone with TASTE can spot that. And seeing as how I've never claimed (never once) to be a great programmer, your arguement is flawed and invalid. The entertainment industry is in a status where the good looking people with mediocre talent make more money than the less attractive but far more talented people, and it doesn't take a genius to figure that out... heck, it doesn't even take an "idiot" to figure that out. But apparently you're somewhere below that on the food chain. Go play on your seals site.

Do you know how hard it is to actually get past that Simon guy? No, because you've never had the talent to sing that well, which you mentioned. And surely there are better and more talented people out there, but why don't you find them then? It's hard to actually get good/find singers.

And it's spelled SEALs, not seals. But I would expect that for someone who doesn't care about those who defend the U.S.

And Simon's taste is better than everyone elses? Is that what you're trying to say? He doesn't let people pass because he thinks they've got talent, he let's them pass because he thinks they're physically attractive, and that's a FACT. I didn't say they were BAD singers, I said they were GENERIC singers, and it's your own fault if you don't understand that.

Don't assume that just because I hate Bush and I oppose the war that I hate the troops. I never once said anything even remotely close to that. Part of the reason why people dislike you is because you put words in people's mouths, to a far greater degree than anyone else on here. You take mis-interpretation to a whole new level. and btw, it's not spelling, it's grammar, to write SEAL as seal. But hey, what do I know if you're going to leave, leave, and let us have our conversation without your butting in with insults and stupidity.

Now I rarely if ever watch Idol, but Matt I think you are making up facts again. Rubben Studard (Sp?), Justin whats his name, Clay Aiken, Fantasia, and the guy who just won, all not very attractive people infact lucky to find a 5 in that group and Simon liked them. You have to remember Simon is playing a part on the show, its his job to be an A$$ and make people cry. I certainly do not think he passess anyone along on their looks as I have seen some pretty attractive on the show that he made look like a fool and some damn ugly ones he gave praise to.

Indeed the letters are the same, but grammar has nothing to do with the words themselves, just the order they are used in. I believe letter case is what you meant.

But 14 year old teenie-boppers think Clay Aiken is "dreamy" and that Kelly Clarkson is hot enough to be a role model. Rubben Studard (spelled as you did, I can't spell it either lol), 14-year old girls said that he reminded them of big teddy bears. I don't know who the other people are, but seriously, they all have physical attributes that some record company jerk thinks makes them "hot," and so they're marketed that way. I mean, Paris Hilton is butt ugly and everyone idolizes her (I've made it my personal mission to destroy Paris Hilton), and Britney Spears is almost as ugly and everyone thinks she's hot. Simon's only real talent, besides acting the role of being the bitter british jerk, is that he can tell which people will be "idols" for their looks. But seriously, I have yet to hear a contestant on American Idol who could sing decent enough to deserve a recording contract... it's all looks and I have no reason to believe other wise.

I met 20 singers at the camp in Eastman (one of the most prestigious music conservatories in the U.S.) who wouldn't even bother associating themselves with something like American Idol, and they're in fecking high school. American Idol's primary concern is certainly not singing ability.

Actually it is spelling. First, if you spell seals, people will think you are refering to the animal. If you spell SEALs, they know you are talking about the Navy's Elite Forces. It is not grammar because both "seals" and "SEALs" are totally two different things.

I do agree with you on destroying Paris Hilton, but what fourteen year olds think Clay Aiken's dreamy? Yourself? I mean, I haven't read anywhere where that's what people think of him. What fourteen year olds are you even talking about. Just because your fourteen year old neighbors say that doesn't mean you should go posting that on the net.

You're lucky Jeku said something before I fired back at you Drew... you're out of your league on that one (and everything else usually). But if you want to argue with me about it, go ahead and e-mail me. And btw, I'm not 14 lol, you missed the mark by 12 years. From now on I'm ignoring everything that Drew says. He talks enough crap to supply all of Kansas with fertilizer, but doesn't a the shovel to distribute it.

ANYWAY, on to the real discussion lol: American Idol. I believe it was Ben Folds who once said "a producer with computers fixes all my ****y tracks." None of these bubblegum pop stars are all too talented. Can they sing better than me? Sure. But should they be placed on a pedestal for their singing? No way. They don't try to raise the bar... they're happy limboing underneath it, and that's why I think shows like American Idol need to be canceled. We shouldn't promote underachievement. I may not be able to sing, but I've been a musician since my early youth, and over the years I've acquired an "ear" for music, or at least I think so, and never once has anyone on American Idol impressed me. And I'm willing to bet that no one on that show will be around 5 years from now... why? Because they're disposable.

The problem with music is that anyone can just as easly say the bands you dig are total crap. And what's considered "good" music in the industry: Music that appeals to a select experianced few who have the "ear" or music that pleases the masses?

It'll keep making money, despite the fact that alot of it is crap.

But I still think Kelly Clarkson has a good voice.

Sure--- I'm not disputing that they have good voices. And I'm sure many of them are pretty too. But the fact that a pretty face and an average voice can swing somebody into high celebrity status, above those with normal voices but the talent to write great music?

Does anyone even know the name of the person(s) who write Kelly Clarkson's songs? Didn't think so.

At least the Academy Awards has it right. When My Heart Will Go On won Best Song for '97, it wasn't Celine Dion who won the Oscar, but the man who wrote the song. That's the real talent in my opinion.

Don't think that this is only pop stars, the producer has a huge influence on a record. Look at Def Leppard, if you listen to the original cuts of their early work and how it was later changed by their producer you would not even know it was the same band. That is part of the reason bands look to work with certain producers, they can make something a hit often regardless of the talent involved.

As for Clay Aiken, I have never heard young girls say he is good looking and I have a few in the family I see often. The "Fanilows" sem to be the people who think he is attractive so homosexual men I guess. When it comes to being an Idol looks can be important, especially for a woman and I don't think the show is about finding the best singer but the most marketable one. When it comes down to it the judges make comments and pick the initial contestants but the viewers choose the winner. When it comes down to it its taste, one of my favorite singers, Bruce Dickison, may not have the "best" voice and there may be alot of people who can hit a scale perfectly up and down all day in any key, but I would rather listen to him belt out a song then most anyone else.

Again, I agree with Jeku... songwriting should be put on a pedestal, not singers who can't write music. My opinion differs slightly in that I think they're average singers and that I haven't heard any of them jump out as being "above par," imo. But when 14 year old girls are praising Britney Spears and give her credit for writing a song, and you say "No, Elvis Costello wrote it for her," and said teenage girls say "Who? The guy who shakes his hips? Isn't he dead?" it makes me want to erase that whole generation and make it all over again with a fresh batch of people. I hate American Idol because it's feeding that fire, and music in 20 years will be even worse than it is today by a very noticeable degree. But with the ratings seemingly growing each year and the show being in the center of a media frenzy, I don't see that happening in the next five years

Unless we Kill Paris Hilton (note the capital "K")

If we Kill Paris Hilton, all of her teeniebopper fans will be sad and they'll skip an episode of American Idol due to their mourning. Fox would think everyone stopped watching their show, so they'd cancel it. We could kill two birds with 17 bullets, a rocket-propelled grenade, and 18 kitchen knives. MY PLAN IS FLAWLESS

edit: I wonder if she'd say "that's hot" if we put a flamethrower to her

I don't know what teenage girls think, as I tend not to be a sexual predator and hang around them... But it is my opinion that as soon as I saw Clay Aiken, I saw how queer "boy" bands are. I mean, come on Lance Bass... Gay? Anyone NOT see that one coming?! He is from N Sync. N sync for crying out loud. But yes, I do agree Pop music is dismal. In fact, I made a thread about it about 10 days ago=P

Dang you Jeku, my two minutes of looking through google was unsucessful upon finding the one who authors her music.

@ Matt
Look, if you have a problem of what I post and whatnot, why don't you just ignore me. I mean, we both have different views on everything, and so I don't see what's so hard about ignoring someone. Plus, no one is putting a gun to your head making you read my posts, are they?

Welcome back, Drew.

I really don't think that the writers of the song are all that important, to me, it's the end quality of the song (which is usually pretty good).

Yah, the best way to find who wrote a song is to look at the credits inside the actual CD cover. But then again, that would require you to actually *buy* a Kelly Clarkson album....

You called him a "complete idiot". You're the one who should be ignoring people. Here's your last warning--- if you continue to be a troll on this forum, I will nuke your account.
