How do you make one thing one color and something else another in the same image?
Like make the whole thing in greyscale but leave another the same color it was.
Like the image below.

Edit:
With the GIMP

select the area you want to stay, and then select inverse and desaturate.

the best mask is the one you create yourself.

usually the path tool in photoshop would be used to create the shape. the saturation filter would indeed be a good choice once you have your selected area as oddy mentions.

trying to use magic wand in a picture above however wouldnt produce a good result for your selection tool. the range of pixels the magic wand would grab would spill into the undesired side around the babies hand.

this path technique is usually referred as deep etching, a common practice used in all those magazines / newspapers you read with products on white backgrounds etc..

You could also take a color photograph, duplicate the layer, then greyscale the bottom layer.

Then just etch away at the top layer, leaving the BW layer underneath.

Might be more straightforward than using filters and paths and stuff for photoshop noobs.

hah, thanks, I got it, you need to take one B&W pic and copy/paste it over the first one, making it a new layer, mask full white over it and use the paint brush to color away the B&W.

Heh, found the pic, then found the tut to go along with it.

Once you get the hang of the kiddie stuff, try taking old black and white photographs. (Like picture of your parents in highschool or something) and colourizing them. It is a bit harder.

That's pretty cool, but why did you decide to lay it out in boxes like that?

Lol, just figured I'd try something new. I didn't make it for an exhibition or anything like that, just to push my skills a bit, and I figured "why not?". Just practice

Here's the original, if you care to gander.

Looks more like you just added a blue tint rather then coloured it.

Pretty cool idea though . I might take it further sometime.
