Interesting stuff. First we hear about Dark Matter, and now we're told that Pluto isn't really a planet. It's now officially known as a dwarf planet.

Great. Now the cheesy video with the random guy who says "my very easy method just speeds up naming planets" with the cheesiest grin ever is ruined! Every kid should get the chance to point and laugh at that video!

They only spent 10.6 billion dollars to figure out this discovery....however the bulk of it will be when our schools have to reprint every book....

There are 3 other celestial bodies in our solar system that they are considering upgrading to planets, good time to invest in astronomy text books.

They could have left pluto as a planet and gave me the 10.6 billion dollars.

So much for the 2 Skinny J's song, "pluto is a planet".

im not even bothering the read that article, but pluto is indead a planet. not only are they keeping a planet, but it might be relabeled as a double planet because its 'moon' and itself orbit around eachother, creating a central gravitational force for both bodies...

I seem to recall a thread where someone said Pluto was a planet, and I said it isn't and that eventually NASA would officially declare it as such. I'm not right that often, so now I get the chance to pat myself on the back, because no one else will, and even if the person I was arguing with realizes his mistake, he won't come forward and say "darn it Matt, you were right )" But *I* remember saying it, so now I'm proud to be right again

Ummm, whatever. You do realize this is an official announcement and not just somebodies opinions? It doesn't really matter either way to me, though. It's just that astronomers finally made a formal definition for planets and Pluto doesn't fit into their definition. If you need a little more persuasion:

@Matt,
Congrats on being right.

So Pluto, the nothing-but-ice-planet is worth, in theory, 10.6 Billion dollars?

Or is that Euro's.

What a rip off!

Actually If I had a chance to buy pluto for 10.6 Billion (and I had it) I would buy it. I could rename it Suckmyballsia or something like that and force a change in the text books. In reality though eventually our mode of travel will improve and who knows what minerals etc might exist there, a good long term investment.

Seriously, if I could afford Pluto I would buy it, and declare it my new home, and then I would gain diplomatic immunity like Peter did on Family Guy when he made Petoria. I could be the first intergalactic diplomat in our solar system And then I can give entire continents away to my friends, lol. And when NASA sends probes to Pluto, I could go on CNN and complain about my illegal alien problem Sounds hot!
