Hi,

I am asking this because I'm making a squad based tactical/shoot 'em up and just wondered what type of squad action is your favourite.

In my opinion there are two main types, the
Desert Storm, Hidden 'N Dangerous style
Where you have direct control over every member of your team and can issue commands from any of the members you are currently controlling, then there's the
The Thing style
Where you have direct control over one main member then just issue commands to the other team members who have their own free will if you like.

I find the first better for tactical action where you can position certain members like the sniper on top of a hill then take the rest with you so you've got some cover, then the other is a lot simpler and less time consuming setting up your squad.

I like squad based games when your squad is a bullet bag, unless the ai is actually usefull.. then perhaps something like swat4? so you can get your little squad to follow you or lead or whatever so that you end up dying last.

best squad based game i played is bf2, because its the only one i played where theres multiple, defined squads with a commander running the operation, and also the roles of the players in the squads vary.

of course, it's all good in theory, as is BF2 itself, but when you actually play it, well, you probably heard it all before...

@ dark coder

Yeah, that's always been one of my tactics in squad based games, where the survival of your team is not essential, just push them into a room full of bad guys and sit back until all is peaceful

@ Teh Go0rfmeister

I've never played BF2, I played the first one and didn't like it, it seemed very rough, like they tried to put too much stuff into one game and ruined it, so that's why I never bought BF2, but I like the idea behind it though with the separate teams of soldiers all commanded by one person.

UFO: Enemy Unknown, plus other XCOM games. But what made that game was the ability to destroy everything in the entire world (every bit of floor, wall, object etc.), which is pretty tough with todays 3D worlds. If you moved one guy a bit too far and he spotted an alien on his turn, and you ran out of time units to shoot it or retreat, you could get other guys on the map to blow holes through walls, chuck grenades over buildings, and generally tear up the landscape to try and kill the alien before the aliens turn. Also, the whole moving in squads, reaction snap shots, team development, randomisation of maps, mission objectives and stategic element made it top.

I've always wanted to remake it, but it'd be just too hard to truly capture the original again.

That's one game I've never played sounds good though, infinite possibilities to how you accomplish the missions. Another oldie that I loved playing was syndicate wars, superb game.

How about the game where the phrase "Squad-Based Tactical Action" first came into existence? One of the greatest FPS titles in history... Rainbow Six. I can't believe no one mentioned this game! Anyway, the RS series is my favorite, particularly the game Rogue Spear, which was one of the first games I religiously played online. The weapons are as realistic as one could hope for, and I love the one-shot-one-kill realism as well (I can't stand it when you shoot a guy in the leg and he walks as if nothing happened... thank you Rainbow Six for being one of the first games to bring realism into the equation). And in RS3 the squad controls are *perfect*... I definitely suggest you play that game, games like SWAT 4 wouldn't even exist if it weren't for them blatently ripping off Rainbow Six!

I say BF2 for the sheer size of the game.

Yeah, BF2 is definitely way bigger, but they're different styles. If you want close-quarters combat, there's no game in the world that does it as good as RS, not that I've ever seen. But if you want widescale warfare, it's not the best game to think about.

Actually I was just about to post almost the exact same thing. I think it is a very fun tactical squad based game. I haven't played many others, but the way it works is rather intuitive and straightforward. The AI is pretty decent too.

I'm working on a high res photorealistic texture pack. High res as in 7 megapixels, e-mail me with suggestions.

I have Star Wars Republic Commando, and I used to like it, but I got bored very fast with the "Star Wars action"... I Just got Perfect Dark Zero, and its short times when you are with a squad are fulfilling, and the AI keeps itself alive for the most part. Does COD2 count as Squad Based? If so, then it is my choice, otherwise SW:RC..

Search for UFO : Alien invasion, it's a pretty good remake of the X-COMs (and it's free!)
You could also try the demo of Silent Storm, it's a cool turn based tactical shooter set during WW2.

syndicate, swat 3, cannon fodder. all top squad games with different styles, though cannon fodder and syndicate were pretty similar. swat 3 had the squad tactics and commands etc. best use of them in a game i have seen so far. much better than full spectrum warrior etc

Syndicate remastered: Corporate persuasion through urban violence.

I like Deltra Force:Xtreme and Conflict:Global Storm.

I presume Battlefield 2142 will be for many, many people, which would be a shame as I've no real interest in playing it over the internet - LAN with 2 or 3 people is preferable.
