Hey everyone,

After a summer of coding binges, I decided to do another one of my coveted breaks to try something new. To my surprise, it turned out to be paintball. Now I never was one to do any thing really sports like, so this of course is all relatively new to me. Anyway, about two weeks ago I noticed that there's a pretty big field on the land my dad leases from another guy, and to my surprise it looked like it would make a perfect, you betcha, paintball field! And here I am now, hard at work clearing the over grown field.

I'm of course new to the whole idea of this, so to any out there who has attempted such a thing, any idea on how to make rather cheap bunkers and obstacles? And anyone on these forums find time to unglue themselves from coding and play the game?

I love paintball, and was interested in converting some of my grandparent's farmland over, but it never went through.

Good luck!

Old tires and sandbags would be cheap and effective. Both can be fortified with fence-posts. Both are cheap, and would just require some work on your part.

My older brothers and I are in the process of setting something up similar, but in a forested area by my grandpas, for cover we've decided on some basic rules;

- Each team gets 5 pieces of standard sized ply-wood, and 10 2x4's.
- Each team has 3 hours to setup the base however they see fit (the time alloted is so high to allow for trench digging and such).

It should be fun, we're planning on getting around 20 people. In the meantime my eldest brothers been calling around scoping out buildings, like malls and such, that are going to be torn down. His idea is we'll pay the owner a set fee to let us reack havock in the building with a paintball war before it gets torn down for the day, ofcourse signing any contracts so the owner wont be responsable for injuries, losses, etc.

Aside from that Id have to agree, tires and bags of sand are a good substitute if you cant find the cash to buy 10 pieces of plywood, but if you can throw on some old tractors, crates, and other farm equipment not in use anymore Im sure that'd add a lot. Also if its not too windy around there and you're serious about this, shelling out a hundred dollars or so for a few smoke generators would be pretty cool.

Um... camo netting is cool imo. Dont know where to get it though.

Oh, and, if you're up for it, the most awesome thing I've ever seen in a paintball park is like this big hole, and had like a big camo tent over it, but then head like one of those round metal tubes underground, and you could crawl through it. Of course, if you got stuck you're pretty much screwed but it was hella fun

Heck, get working farm equipment and use 'em as jeeps and tanks!

Those are some great ideas, if only I had a mall being torn down near me! But anyway, today I made a pretty sweet Bunker our of some plywood and 2x4s, sorta shaped like a v with a poke hole in it. Were going to build another one tomorrow, as well as two low bunkers out of wood pallets. As for the field, were having a lawn guy come in and mow down all the tall over grown weeds and such(believe me, its REALY overgrown, I tackled it for hours to no avail). And best of all, we found some old tires and sandbags lying around back there. Seems like this is coming together seamlessly(Perhaps programming WON'T be my only hobby), Ill be sure to take a picture of the end product, cheers.

I love paintballing, only been four times though. You could use pretty much anything sturdy for a bunker...but it's better to have more natural bunkers like a pile of logs or something similar IMO .

Whats wrong with it being overgrown? It'd make good cover =)

Yeah, maybe leave patches of overgrown stuff, but have paths cut through it.

For bunkers and stuff, you could dig some holes about 4 feet deep, then stack logs up another 2 or 3 feet, or put posts up, and then put camo netting over the top. Then it looks more authentic too.

And its virtually free! Though digging would be a pain. You could rent a small backhoe for a day and do all your digging at once.

I live near an army barracks, they have heaps of soldier shops and camping stores etc..

Expensive
If you want to make this an enterprise, simply get a quote for a decent fence around the space.
fences can be stored away if you have temp access to the area.
depending on size and budget.
You get wholesale prices being a small business or company and always when buying in bulk get a discount.
goto warehouse suppliers dont bother with the resellers.

most paint ball places i have played at in australia have a fallen chopper and a tower and a few bunkers.

car wreckers might have cheap vehicles if you wanted to try and find old jeeps or trucks.

If you could change the land, rent a Bobcat ($few hundred a day )and carve a halfway line trench or a few dugouts and mound up places. these ideas are only if you can get to change the land in a big way.

Cheap
2 Tents camo'ed one for each side. The bases.
Lots of poles and reems of meter wide calico material (cheap) between each pole to create fences and barrier layout.
one man triangle tents would suffice for obstacles and defense postions.
cheap one man tents could be bought camo'ed for very cheap

Yeah, I played it years ago. Totally forget the name, but it was at a converted military base where all those women used to hang around outside complaining about nuclear war or somesuch. Anyway, it was totally cool as you got to run around buildings rather than some fields or forest (also good, but not in the same league). Rather cool sniper points could be found (standing on a sink firing out of a small hole that used to house a fan was good, but dangerous ) along with some escape slides they put on some of the higher buildings (slide down 3 storeys firing away like an idiot). Because there was like *loads* of buildings it was like Urban-warfare-tastic. Great stuff.

Apart from a couple of people who took it too seriously and thought they were Rambo, it was a totally cool day out

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I got the suggestion, and we were going to keep the place overgrown until we found out it was infested with snakes, I think Ive seen 5 so far, and I'm not to crazy about being bit by one.

i've played paintball for a couple years and really enjoy it

^what they've been saying, find anything you can, barrels, old cars are cool, make a few bunkers... etc^

paintball is pretty much split into two categories, Woodsball and Speedball

woodsball is usually played in... well..the woods, and may or may not have any human inserted obstacles... there may be woods and fields together. usually the fields for this are larger (2 to 10 acres) because of the large field size stealth and patience play a large role.

speedball is SPEEDY... i've never actually played this but i know it's played on a small field (tiny to 2 acres or so) with plenty of bunkers/barrels/whatever thrown in (set up symmetrically-ish so no side has an advantage). the players start out close to each other with not much room for flanking so the game goes by fast

you might want to cater to either of these styles (if you did woodsball you might throw in trenches and barrels and other things but you wouldn't fill the place with them)

or you might just want to make a style in-between (your own style)

either way, have fun! and good luck!

(you might want to check out this site and it's forum for tactics and stuff http://www.specialopspaintball.com/ if you register use my ID as the reference 93522 )

[edit] oh, here's another good site http://www.bansheepaintball.com/tactics.htm

and if you have snake problems, yeah make sure you mow lol... that could be bad especially if you run it as a small business

Ah, I do remember reading about speed ball as the correct term, and that's what kind of course were building. There's not enough room for anything else really. In Fact the field is rather small, so Speed ball is really the only possibility.

Haha--- that reminds me when I was in QA they took us paintballing for "team building". For one mission they put all the newhire noobs in a little house, and all the "non-noobs" surrounding them. Oh it was great.

Hard to get near the house, but since they were all cramped in there I doubt they had a good strategy. Plus there was no glass in the windows so we would just quickly run by, firing into the building Max Payne-style and then dive into the trees. One by one a noob would come out who was hit. ROFL.

So much fun.
