Here's the deal...

Amazon are selling Windows XP Home + SP2 at 14% discount - £81
In addition you get a £40 voucher to spend on anything at Amazon, effectively making your purchase of XP just £41.

With christmas on the horizon (according to some shops at any rate), you can quite easily spend your £40 on presents, even if you don't want anything yourself.

This is an upgrade version, you'll need a CD from 98, ME or Win2K.

Or alternatively, get the OEM one with something cheap that is classed as a part of a computer (like mouse, keyboard or extra RAM). Thats how I do it. OEM and Retail are the same, except:
a) You dont get a box
b) I dont think you qualify for phone support... Or something like that...

I use Aria as I think they're the cheapest (from what I've seen). But your price is VERY cheap for retail!

OEM is OK ,so long as you are planning on keeping your hardware for a while. The license is attached to the hardware (which is why retailers HAVE to stick the license key to the case), and cannot be transferred.

I plan on upgrading early next year, so OEM wasn't an option. But you are indeed right - I just acquired 4 PCs for a client with XP Pro. OEM was £105, rather than £193, a huge saving!

That is true... How much is it linked to the hardware though? If I buy a new keybaord, do I need a new OEM license? New RAM? New Hard Disk? New CPU? What if the motherboard breaks and I have to buy a new one (not as an upgrade), doe I need a new OEM license too?

I managed to get OEM XP 64-bit without the hardware - and that was a reputable firm...

You can buy an OEM version without hardware, but it will only activate on one machine. If you call M$ to install on another machine, you will be informed you have to buy a new license.

The retail version will also make you call M$ when installed elsewhere but in this case they will give you a new activation key, once you have agreed to "destroy" the previous installation. The old installation will also only go into Safe Mode once the WPA system makes it's next check.

I bought XP Pro OEM 64bit, but it wouldnt let me install software that I needed, such as my wireless BT drivers. I ended up selling it for £50 because I couldnt install stuff.

How come it wouldnt install software?

Because it wasn't a 64-bit driver ?

Drivers usually need to be 64-bit. Standard software can be either 32 or 64-bit.

I have XP Pro SP2, but it stops my wireless software from working at start up, so it installed fine. But I bought another copy of XP because I got fed up of having to do walk arounds forthe problem, the software just wouldnt install, it got to the bit where it was installing and froze.

Dabs sell XP Home SP2B OEM for £60.14, XP Media Center SP2B OEM £75.47, XP Professional SP2B OEM for £94.99, and XP Professional x64 SP2B OEM £91.66. Of cause you need to grab a peice of hardware from them, so why not grab a new hard drive?

OEM isn't an option, as explained. I did actually buy a 250GB hard drive and external case, which is backing up my data ready for the reinstall right now.

Nicholas Thompson mentioned aria, I live near the warehouse which has a walk up counter and it has a sign behind it listing all the different hardware that you can buy to get Windows XP at the OEM price.

It made me laugh when my friend went into buy it once for the full price of £160+ and the guy behind the counter said just buy this 2 quid keyboard and you can have windows for £65

i hope something similar eventually happens with Vista
