Could any one recomend a good PHP web host from the UK? I am not looking for a free host, but a paid host, one which has been going for a few years so I know it wont shut down within the first three weeks of using it.

I use A2B2 who provide me a VPS (which is like a middle ground between dedicated server and a shared one). You get complete root access so you can run whatever you want (within legal reason and T&C's) so PHP4 or 5 - your choice! Same with Apache, 1.3, 2.0 or 2.2? Up to you! Which version of linux do you like? Choice of 4.

I cant fault them at all. Very reliable. VERY quick for UK. Server is on 100Mb connection. You can host as many sites as you like (within the limits of your resources like RAM, HD, etc).

Very friendly (or at least they have been to me).

Fantastic company.

A2B2

Just checked it out, it looks like one Ive used before, which closed down without any notice. I dont really trust forum based sign ups for web hosting, any more.

I came across this site just now: http://www.webfusion.co.uk/

It looks like the kind of host I would trust with my money and hosting. But I want to see if any one else has a host they like, before I buy.

DO NOT GO WEBFUSION! We use(d) them at work. Not particularly reliable. We're migrating all the sites hosted by them onto a dedicated server hosted by Rackspace

EDIT: I trust A2B2... They seem fine to me.

Use one and one (http://www.oneandone.co.uk) Very good service, very good packages, and excellent customer support. I've used them for 9 years, and always done me good. I'm a full time, php web developer, and use them all the time.

Other than, try UKFast (http://www.ukfast.net). We have a dedicated server with them, and the service we get from that is amazing. They do offer shared hosting, but i'm not too sure what the costs are, but if they are affordable, i'd go with them.

Hope that helps. One and One allow you to use php 4, or 5 (using some clever scripting, which they provide). Not sure on UKFast's php version, although i think it is 4, upgrading to 5 soon.

I use http://www.streamlinenet.co.uk/

I have a bulk account with them. If you are interested I can let you have one of my domains for £35, normally it's £44.99 per year (unless you grab a two year contract in which case it works out £33.99, though you have to pay £67.98. I host most of the lastest technologies with it i reguards to PHP or MySQL.

Basically you'd have the same as the Unlimited user account.

Un-restricted Vistor Bandwidth
Unrestricted webspace (the condition is that it won't be used as a file server, any webspace used must be apart of the website. On the other hand, Open MMO is about 600Mb in size at the moment because of the forums attachements.)
No adverts
up too 5 subdomains
free domain name
Unlimited POP3 Accounts
Unlimited e-mail forwarders
Unlimited auto responders
CGI-BIN
up too 5 MySQL databases
PHP My Admin
ASP, Perl, CGI, SHTML, IHTML with a Windows 2003 server or
CGI, C, Perl, and Python on a linux server as well as SSH access
And of cause PHP scripting support for both servers.

If you want to discuss it more just add me on MSN.

If you want a two year payment in one go, I can offer that for £55

I'll provide you with all the technical support I can.

Here's a few of the websites I run

www.openmmo.co.uk
www.blackoutgame.co.uk (via blackout.gamersol.co.uk)
www.dcforeman.co.uk
www.kenjarworks.co.uk
www.darkbasichelp.co.uk

And a few others for other people.

@Higgins

Yes it does, although this is only on the top 3 packages. The link below is the least expensive package with mysql support (2 databaes allowed).

http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/HostingBus;jsessionid=B94938571B31075D2430A28B35CD6F83.TC32a

It only allows you to connect to it through PHPMyAdmin which is automatically installed on the account when bought (can't use programs like MySQL Front, it bans external access, which is good for security purposes and hacking!)

Well, the £55 for two years offer worked out at £2.29 a month, and the £35 a year worked out at £2.91 a month. If you can find cheaper than that, with all the features I'm offering, more power to you! Hell, I'll buy hosting of you! lol

@ Kenjar

When you say "Un-restricted Vistor Bandwidth", what is the "real" amount of bandwidth that you have to use? Bandwidths never unlimited! I just had to fork out £100 extra a month on top of my bills already for extra bandwidth.

I really dont know which host to go with. I basically need a host which could run an online shop, a gallary and my portfolio. The php is only needed for the login and paypal shop.

It is not me who will be doing the php, but a friend. Can any of you help me choose the right host?

Tell me about it! Unlimited webspace and bandwidth too. I've got the bulk package, 10 webservers with 5 subdomains each, for £100 a year. Though you do need to purchase the domain names on top of that, so in reality you are basically getting 10 of their domains and server accounts for £15 each, which you can't argue with.

Thanks alright, you can grap a .com now for £10, and have the .co.uk point to it, or just transfere the domain onto the account.

My danielhiggins.co.uk domain only cost me £9.95 for 2 years, which I though was good.

123reg.co.uk do .co.uk's for £2.59 a year (+VAT)... so 2 years is about £6.02 I think (when I bought a domain recently). But thats without hosting.

1and1 do .co.uk domains for £1.99+VAT per year = £2.34 so that's only £4.68 for 2 years. Bargain.

They also have an incredible special offer on .com addresses where first 2 years are only £4.99+VAT per year, then it goes up to £8.89+VAT

Boo!
