So anyone forking out £999 for a Blu-Ray disc player, given the vast amount of products available to play on it? Given that the PS3 will be Blu-Ray, and a small portion of the cost of this, I think somebody somewhere is having a laugh!

It says

availability: Due for release on 20/10/2006"

I don't know if it's because I'm from the US, but that does not make sense.

Cocacola and Pepsi aren't that differnt. Deal with it.

For Americans, swap the 10 and the 20 and replace the 999 with $1903.095

I figured anyone would assume if the £ is there then you can swap for the EU DD/MM/YY format.

Just buy the £200 computer drives. Well, maybe not that cheap, but definitely less than £999. What a total ripoff.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

Thats pretty much it, with all those American customisations you're only confusing yourselves. Now if I were to send you to Gaol you'd likely to say WTF

But thats mental, I can get a good hifi with Mission Speakers for that, heck, I'd just need the speakers and attach to my computer and have good quality surround sound...Actually I be honest I don't know the price of a good hi-fi or mission speakers...so please don't make me look like a fool if they aren't cheap

I dunno, look how much DVD players cost when they *very first* came out. Or laser discs. I don't see this as being much different - it's just creaming the home-cinema-buff crop, poor saps

Hmmm. Aren't Blu-Ray players in the US about $1000? I thought the $1=£1 rip-off Britain days were long gone. Fair enough we still get shafted, but a $1000 item is about £550 in direct conversion, and these days we would expect to pay about £600-650 after going through the UK IT shaft-tax. But £1000 is taking the mick.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

It's all about supply and demand mixed with covering upp for R&D costs. Early adopters and "must have first maniacs" are what manufacturers love.

And a $600 PS3 looks cheap now doesn't it

We have still to see the final price of Wii. Latest word from Nintendo is < $250.

Or why not wait for the price drops? My guess is that Sony will lower the PS3 price as supply starts outgrowing demand and then MS will be forced to lower and then Nintendo will have to follow.

It's gonna be interesting to see what MS will charge for their external HD-DVD player. If it's more then $200 then why not go for a PS3 and get a 80GB larger HDD?

But let's not turn this thread into a console thread

I've read 3 reviews where the review had both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD versions of the movie, and in all 3 they said that HD-DVD not only had better picture quality, but better sound quality as well. Looks like sonys format is going down the drain... History repeats.

I saw a display in the Sony tower in Tokyo (gratuitous location dropping, there - did you notice? ) where they showed a DVD image on the same screen as a super-whizzy one (probably Blu-Ray, it was Sony). Maybe it's just my 'old' eyes, but I couldn't tell much difference. Certainly not enough difference to care. I won't be an early adopter, that's for sure

Haha, yes I agree

No offence to any if there are some lurking here, but 'home cinema buffs' are all sad if you ask me - go the hell out and visit a real cinema, it's a better screen than anything you'd ever fit into your house

Yeah I know, it's expensive and the pop corn is crap, but really.. how much free time do people have to actually spend watching films anyway?! Is it just me, or is my life just unusually full or something? I *never* buy DVDs of films, because I don't care to re-watch anything I've seen once unless it is utterly exceptional. In my entire lifetime (or rather the lifetime of videos and DVDs) I can count on both hands the number of films I've bought. Ok, so that is why nothing HD or Blu-Ray appeals to me and I still think 'Blu Ray' sounds like a porn merchant.

Izzy:
I heard that there was some problem with the movies, BD is capable of a lot more then HD-DVD with both more space and higher speeds but they need to make sure everything works.

Tinker:
Today it's possible to scale up DVD movies in real time with very high quality. The difference is in the texture. With 1080p it's easier to see things like grass, fabric and similar high detail stuff. The thing is that we are used to the lower quality and it's harder to notice the improvement. Once we get used to noticing the differences we won't like DVDs any more. You can compare this to the transition from MC to CD and VHS to DVD. Also it requires a large high quality TV to take benefit of a higher resolution, and that you sit close enough. Of course, the difference between 720p and 1080p is even smaler even though 1080p have more then 100% more pixels.

But is there even a demand for Blu-Ray movies? I have not literally met one person who has a DVD collection and would like better quality. I mean, who wants to rebuy their movies again? The difference between VHS and DVD was huge. DVD and Blu-Ray not so much. Like Rich said, if you want the best quality go to a theatre.

My nepew's dad have a 52" back projection TV and he was totally sold on HD-DVD once he saw the difference in quality compared to DVD so I'm sure there are people out there who are into HD already. But I don't think there's a lot of people who are rebuying their movies. I think a lot of people have stoped buying DVD movies and are waiting to get their hands on whatever HD format they are going for. BD have an advantage here with Sony Pictures who won't be releasing anything on HD-DVD.

Problems with cinema:
1. Expensive (renting is cheaper)
2. Bothersome to get there and waiting etc
3. There usually are people in the way or you have a bad angle
4. Loads of people making loads of noices
5. You can't pause the movie
6. When you're out of snacks or coke you can't get any more
7. Some movies have annoying breaks in the middle
8. The quality of the film lowers every time it's shown
9. You can't each your dinner while watching
10. Probably other reasons I can't think of at the moment
