I started getting guitar lessons in school a while ago and I got put straight into grade 3 (there are 8 grade in the Rock School syllabus, don't know how it works in other places), and after a while I kept getting moved up, eventually I found my self in grade 5m, but learning Grade 6 and 7 stuff because both my teacher and I agreed that G5 was boring. Now just the other day I walk in and see this sheet of music that looks fast, and it turns out it's a piece called 'Metal Mania' in Grade 8 (which is a total rip-off of 'Speed Metal Symphony' by Jason Becker), and I have to learn it. To be honest it's not that hard now that I think of it. I'm proud of myself if I may say so, I'm the only person in my whole year group doing Grade 8!

Nice. I tried to play my friend's flute the other day. I guess it's something you have to get used to, I couldn't blow over the hole correctly

I know, it's weird, but once you get it you'll always wonder how you couldn't get it. Like riding a bike I suppose.

congrats, i was aiming for grade 8 trumpet this year but pulled out because i didn't have enough time to practice with school work and exams (i took 4 advanced highers, i didn't even sleep during the projects -litterally i was up 30 hours straight working before my maths nab on one wednesday morning (a test you have to pass to even sit the exam, but it's only level C fortunately ) and i hadn't had much sleep each night leading up to that either, it's not like i'd had 8 hours every other night)
it wasn't the technical playing of the pieces that was my problem, it was just the physical stamina, a problem i don't think guitars have, at least not to the same degree as trumpet so they possibly make the actual pieces technically harder for you.
anyway good job zotoaster

n the UK you generally have 8 grades;

Grades 1-3 : easy
Grades 4- : intermediate
Grades 6-7-8: hard

after that there's Performer's Certificate, but few bother with that. So saying "I'm grade 8" is a true symbol of ownage in that particular discipline.

You can get points beyond grade 5. 8 Is worth the same as an A level I think...

We have the grades system here too. I only made it up to Grade 2 in piano, though, before I quit for good.
