How long has it shown the forum that the thread is in? Thats a fantastic addition!

Thread search was - but it just retuend a list of thread titles. No idea if it was General Chat (Geek Culture), DBP, DBC, 3D, DLL or whatever...

If I remember correctly, it would only return results from the particular section you were searching from. Although I may be wrong..

That's correct Benjamin. I've actually gotten used to that, today I did a search for something simple and it returned every instance on the forum. I don't think I like it.

Hmmmmm. Not sure I like the new change either, but it does have it's benefits though. There are so many topics now that it was a pain trying to remember which one had a particular thread in. This makes it easier. However, searching specific topics like the bug forum is now really difficult as it lists stuff from all other topics aswell.

Now if there was an extra option like a little tickbox or dropdown box to search either 'This' topic or 'All' topics, then everyone would be happy.

Boo!

Now if you could get it to search for topics by the name of the person who posted it ... then I would be very happy and grateful.

Yeah, I think he's suggesting a "give me all topics started by Fallout (because they'll be the best ones)" type of search.

Yeah, but you should have a specific option for "Cash Curtis Threads", because it will save everyone from having to type it out

Great addition with the current search options Rich. Thanks!

Only problem is quite a lot of threads are called help me, or stuff like that. So maybe a full text search aswell?

[Edit]: Only a max of 50 results?

To be honest - you're now talking about a fully fleged filtering system - which would be absolutely fantastic...

A page with a set of drop down boxes - one for registered users, another for board, maybe date range, maybe wildcard filtering for subject, maybe a list of all threads that person "x" has posted in? Click "go" and you'd get a list of threads. Probably "easy" to program as well, especially for someone of Rich's calibre... And I know I'd find it usefull.

Question is - time. I'm guessing Rich's job doesn't really involve thumb twiddling!

It would probably also increase the load on the server quite a lot by throwing lots of queries at it where people start asking for all threads by joe bloggs written before Jan 1 2005 in the 3D Chat board... I dunno! Maybe it'd be ok.

problem is, most users change their display name every other month.
so it would have to be the email adress that the users registered with that we can search for. and how are we going to know what their email adress is? not to mention, not everybody whiches to have their email visible to others.

What you've suggested isn't impossible (and was implemented in the now not-so-new Apollo codebase, years ago) but I won't add it to this version because of time. That and the database isn't optimised for searches of that variety - ideally I'd want specific search content tables, and indexes on them matching various date/user criteria.

I have however added a 'View all Threads by this User' option - just view someones profile and you'll see it.

Oh and it is 'Forum Name' neutral - meaning even if they changed their name a hundred times it'll still show all their Threads (well, the top 100 anyway)

I think Rich's Mod-Star thing should say God... Or would that be a breach of the AUP?

EDIT: That threads-by-user feature is fantastic! (secretly would love a drop down box to filter by board... )

Now if the Who's Online list linked to the profile, you could see how many lurkers there were...the ones who read but never post.

you're seriously beeing too kind. i've been after this function since i joined, but never got the idea to ask.

now what would be neat is to have the bug fixed where a thread you have allready read is still blue when it should be white.
it gets annoying after a while, and it allways trick me in thinking there are new posts when in fact there are none.

however the "mark all as read" fixes that, but it doesn't fix the bug.

i found it common to happen when i click the "toggle" button, but i'm sure that is just coincidences.

And, just to push my luck, how about some kind of last page or last read page on the main board where you can see the most recent post made in a board?

What would be the difference between that and the 'Last Post' on the forum home page?

The last post may not always be on the same page as the last read post. Sometimes you click last post and the last page appear with 1 post on it while there are 20 unread ones on the previous page. When you click previous page, everything has already been marked as read, so it becomes difficult to know where to pickup from.

Rich, what I meant is that when you're on the "master board" as I'l call it, ie, it shows DBP, DBC, Newcomer's Corner etc, you see the latest post made in a particular board, but you click on it and it takes you to the first page

Agreed. That is the last great thing I would like on this forum. After that, I'm happy.

Oh yah, and the personal showcase pages where we can add our own games to our profiles, which I remember reading was coming to the new version of Apollo.

Anyone read my "user-submitted keyword" system idea? Or is not replying a kind way of saying its stupid? (Not meant to be read sarcastically or with attitude, I just think a system like this would eliminate a tonne of re-asked questions, and help speed the searching process along quite a bit).

It could work - I'm just thinking that if the user isn't capable of writing a useful title for their thread, the chances of them tagging it correctly (or even understanding what that entails) are, well.. remote.

And if on the off chance that either a user adds a nondescriptive keyword, or an idiot comes along and fills it with spam, the mods could have a feature to see who's added the keyword, and they'd get whats coming to them. Ontop of that mods would ofcourse be able to remove keyword entries.

Either that or maybe just give the mods the ability to edit thread titles to something more appropriate.

Or... dont do anything at all , doesnt matter.

I do think that tagging (like Flickr) or Digging/Burying (like Digg) would be a fantastic feature for the forum. SO many usefull threads just slip down the pages, lost forever.

While we're "complaining" about the forum, Programming Talk is on different slots in the drop down list on the right than on the "main" board.

Also, you don't have the date a user joined on their profile. Just on a post. Thought I'd complain while you're on a hot streak to updating Apollo.

A way to search inside threads would be nice, too. Not all topic subjects accurately identify what the post is about.

Results are also dependent on which way the terms terms are ordered.

"3d mouse" returns 18 results while "mouse 3d" returns 1.

It would also be nice to be able to sift through more than 100 results when searching for a broader term, as the results can be distorted by the addition of a more specific request.

Personally, I tend to have more luck using the google search - although this forum (as most forums do) has very little SEO and os heavily targetted at the user not the Search Engine. Things like having next and back buttons but not a set of links directly to each page means some pages could be 20 or 30 clicks away from the front page. Google rates a page's importance based on the number of clicks required to get to it.

I wrote a script on my home server which crawled every page of the challenges thread and used regular expressions to break up each post and then more RegEx to break each post into things like post id, date and content. I then inserted that into a MySQL database and then applied a fulltext index to the content field which then allows me to do fulltext searches on the content column. Works pretty well. But it requries me to resync with the site for every search, otherwise its out of date data.
