You get a very thin knife (or the special tool) and open it from the seams on the side. It should pop off. (if its a different ipod than I think, then it opens from top and bottem.

I think i had the same problem, the model i posess is the 40gb, one of the earlier models 2 years old iirc.
I had the 'complaint' delivered to me in the form of the sad looking ipod icon and then it just cut out. After much deliberation with forking out £70 to get it fixed i just abondoned all prospects and left it to collect dust.
However, my sister managed to revive it some months afterward by simply pressing the 'play' button on the fly wheel and then sharply hitting the top righ-hand corner of it with the palm of her right hand. Somehow this 'jogged' the HD into life (as previously whirred a little then cut out repeatedly for about 1 minute). Problem solved! my iPod has work relentlessly to this day! I would, however exercise caution when doing this, even if it does work, the inevitable long term damage is yet to prevail.

Kind of a candid approach but it worked for me

Sometimes when I leave my iPod in a very cold place, or just drain it to nothing, and try to turn it on, I get something like the battery symbol with a lightning bolt on the top right of the battery image, anly without color.. It does nothing when I plug it in. I plug it in anyway, then unplug it right away, press play, and plug it in again, an it works! See if that works.

hold wheel north and wheel button for 15 seconds to reset it.

let it drain for 24 hours, everytime you walk past turn it on etc..

recharge it via the wall socket and not via usb or firewire off the computer.

use the ipod updater via an application download or on your CD installer or within itunes 7
