You need to be creative. Think about something that inspires you.
What makes you want to create games? This is the kinda thing that has to be original.

Its also important to know that if you're just a teenager and are looking for a cool company name to try and attract attention to your products, just thinking of a name and using it doesn't make it a legit company. And usually, actually pretty much always, when kids make up a company to seem "big", it makes a lot of people turn away from their product.

I like how Acclaim chose their name--- they looked for an English word in the dictionary that would alphabetically come before Activision. You can do the same kind of thing. Look in the dictionary for some good words.

Also you can get a few words that describes your company, and then use a thesaurus to find synonyms for that word. You'd be amazed at some cool ideas you'll find from doing that. That is how I found Automaton Games, as automaton is another word for an autonomous being, like a robot.

Yes. A thesaurus is a great way to choose company names. I use it quite often for lots of different things.

For instance, using the thesaurus on the word "imagination", and you'll recognize a few company names.

imagination
acuteness, artistry, awareness, castle-building, chimera, cognition, conception, creation, creative thought, creativity, enterprise, fabrication, fancy, fantasy, idea, ideality, illusion, image, imagery, ingenuity, insight, inspiration, intelligence, invention, inventiveness, mental agility, notion, originality, perceptibility, realization, resourcefulness, sally, supposition, thought, thoughtfulness, unreality, verve, vision, visualization, wit, wittiness

I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do. ~Hal-9000

When me and my cousins decided to purchase webspace we needed a name for the domain and our "company" so on our free proboards forum we had at the time, we all posted random words we thought were cool and would work well in a title, company name, or web address. After like 100 or so words were posted we looked through them and narrowed them down to things that would fit together and sound cool. We ended up picking Silver Dawn. For one thing it just sounds cool to us, another, you could look at it as sort of a description, implying a dawn of a new era in game design.

How about Electronic Arts, you're using a computer to make 'arts' being the software. Perfect!

But seriously Jeku's method is good, I personally took the dictionary idea for Seppuku Arts, but picked up a Japanese dictionary instead. (Initially it was Seppuku Geijutsu, but I thought I'd leave Arts in English)

Here's an example: I tried to come up with something that had some sort of silly connotation... hence "Silicon Notation".

That sort of thing...

I like to use a mix of Latin, Greek and gibberish, but that is just me. Most great company names share absolutely nothing in common. Names, something ending in corp, or vision...whatever.

A cool name for a software company is any name that a software company with a cool product comes up with. Cool names are very close to bad ones:
LegionWare = GOOD
LesionWare = BAD

Think about what kind of software you want to write, and see if some names occur to you then. Failing that, think about the quality of the software that you want to write. If that fails, quit thinking about it, and trust your imagination to provide a name. Then, let it happen, quit forcing it.

I reckon the best company names are memorable ones. Sounding cool is pretty pointless. I always remember People Can Fly, which is obviously about as camp as a name can get, but it's memorable. The logo of the kid pretending to be a plane is funny too. I don't actually think me "Invisible Chainsaw Software" is very good, and if I ever release a title, I'll probably try to come up with another one, but at least when I tell people my website URL, they always remember it. I think that's far more important.

Underware Games would be funny, but unfortunately is already taken. Me and my cousin thought that one up and later ended up seeing it on another site... Aren't they associated with TGC in some way...? Playbasic comes to mind.

What about Junkie Games, then you can have a logo of some totally addicted gamer with bloodshot eyes... drooling, playing a computer game.

Sallyware, what a great name!

My suggestion is if you have one game that your going to make exclusivly just name your company after the game. Like the OddWorld people did, OddWorld inhabitants I think they're called.

Take the name of your first pet, and the name of your favorite body part. Then add "games" or "studio" to the end of it, whichever sounds better.

Trapper Elbow Games... nah.
Trapper Elbow Studios... shweet.

Of the sick ones I think that's my favorite But you better produce a bunch of strip poker games. Or maybe a FPS title where you play a heartbroken stripper out to sleep her way to the top of the adult film industry.
