Alright, so the other day my PC was running super slow (and it really, REALLY shouldnt) so I figured an adware/spyware/virus scan/reboot was the way to go, so I did all the above. When I rebooted however, I got the point where I could see my destktop image, but it took my icons + start menu a good 5 minutes to appear, and it cant aquire a network address so no internet

I think the problem is that during one of windows updates, I hit cancel about 1/5 the way through....and it never finished updating. A few programs (requiring a TCP connection) encounter errors while opening. I booted in safe mode which worked fine, but when I went to boot safe mode with networking, the same thing happened - long boot time. I've come to the conclusion there is something wrong with my PC's networking.

I tried reinstalling the drivers for my ethernet card (completely removed the card from my system and reinstalled it with different drivers) and still the same problem. Since I cant connect to the internet, I cant do a windows update, and I tried doing a system restore but it doesnt work...ever.

Any ideas on what to do here? Maybe a new network card would be the solution to my problems? Anything you need me to check, please let me know. Thanks a lot everyone

-John

Do you happen to have a restore point set? Try using that if you do. Also try running a repair installation of XP. Do those things and post on progress.

Borrow someone elses XP CD for the time being? I'm sure there are some XP repair utilities out there too. Try finding out what was contained in that update and uninstall/reinstall/repair it. For example if the .net framework got interupted just uninstall it and go find the latest .net package and install it in it's place.

Running out of ideas!

Try this. Use another computer to download the update again. Then burn to cd and run on the comp with the prob.

I didn't think you could download the update to a cd... I thought it downloads and installs automatically.
