Hi, I have started re-writing my old php game which was called the controller. People who played this will remember it as a space based trade simulation. This new game however will be set on Earth in the past and will probably concentrate on production lines that branch out from farming.

The idea is that you can purchase land to use for cultivating crops or animal husbandry, or you can create processing plants for things like milk, livestock, crops etc.

The reason I chose to do it this way is that there is far more information I can use to devise the simulation more accurately.

One problem that I might encounter is time-dilation, since rearing a calf to birth takes longer than producing butter from milk for example, but the games all operate on the same turn based system. Any ideas how I could go about handling this without having long boring periods of waiting.

Your input is appreciated

If you take the larger amount of time - maybe you get a calf once every 3 years per correctly aged cow, and every year you get X gallons of milk per cow. (These numbers are made up - I have no idea how often cows drop calves.)

The thing about calves is that it's quite a big investment of time and energy to get yourself another cow - it should be the long route instead of just buying one. Buying one is expensive and quick, 'growing' one is cheaper but slow - nice playoff there.

As long as there are other things going on while you wait for your cows to birth, and your calves to grow to maturity, then I don't see a problem.

Maybe set it every season - winter, spring, summer, autumn. That would reinforce the agrarian nature of the game, give you the harshness of winter to deal with, and be a reasonable amount of time to deal with things. How much milk every three months, how much feed do cows eat, can you grow two crops of carrots in the season... etc etc.

Here's a tip: Don't tear it off the net while we're playing instead of paying attention to class. My class mates got pretty angry last time. XD

plants that grow crystals that refine into ship parts.
planets that grow bacteria used in shaping rare minerals into other minerals.

if you intertwine things into threes. eg a plant and an enzime and an ore that produce 9 different components with each planet trading the 3 base materials, would be the start of something cool.

gamasutra and a book called game architecure and design talks about the paper scissor rock principles.

if you get a chance have a go at a mac try escape velocity nova for ideas and things you can improve.

You could have a Rebecca Loos power-up to speed up the production of new animals
