what next? ray mears getting killed in a self-created forest fire?

Yeah, I heard this earlier. One report said that the Top Gear people told the BBC that he walked to a helicopter to get to hostpital, another says that he was unconcious and picked up by ambulance. They reckon he woke up and talked to them at the hospital. Sounds like he was stuck in the burning car for a period of time though. Can't be good...

Ah, apparently both Sky and BBC just said he is stable and not critical now. So thats good.

Intresting stat on wiki reckons they have 350 million viewers for Top Gear. Knew it was pretty popular, but thats pretty good going.

Heh, wonder if fans will attack jet cars in retaliation?

Cheers

Ps. They said it was an English land speed record attempt. Surely that is for fastest speed in England, as I'm sure we have held the world record several times in the past at a lot faster speed than 300mph (F1 must get pretty close to that). Not too suprising really. Get to about 200mph and you will probably smash into a town.

Peter Brock? - never heard of him. - is he Australian?

Glad he's getting better, Brainiac and Top Gear are actually worth watching, that's accolade in terms of British TV these days.

I wonder if Clarkson will lay off him for a bit now .

Ditto, except the only reason I don't watch Top Gear is because I cannot stand Jeremy Clarkson, he makes me cringed, I didn't even like it when he was on 'Have I got new for you' once, it was hilarious, but he wasn't.

Dare I say it, or dare I be mean and evil, I would have preferred it if it were Jeremy, I like Richard Hammond a whole lot much better.

Its just said on the News that he has brain damage. I dought he'll be on TV any more, so I guess they will have to pack Brainiac in or get a new host.

apparently it was quater to five when it happened, and one of the firemen at the scene said that he wasn't sure if it was for filming or whether he was just doing it for fun, but the car veered off to the right for an unknown reason

i really hope he gets well and is not seriously affected by it as he is a great presenter, but the docters reckon he might have brain damage, but he's in a neural specialty ward so lets all hope for the best - crosses fingers

He is, unfortunately, he has suffered severe Neurological damage, chance of him surviving, are believed to be low, chance of being able to walk, I wouldn't count on it, I was told that the experts say that he will very likely to be brain dead, meaning life support, not movement except organs and his eye lids. Poor guy, you'll be missed on TV, Brainiac and Top Gear will never be the same.

Sounds like it's all rumours at the minute. I heard he was talking to people properly on the way to the hospital. I mean there is a lot of different levels of brain damage. He may be almost fully ok after a period of time.

You do know that he won't be reading this thread, don't you?

I don't understand why celebrities are put on a pedestal--- an excellent career teacher could get nailed by a bus and people wouldn't bat an eye. Ricky Gervais gets pulled under a street cleaner and people are all up in arms. Oh well, guess that's the way society is.

I have some news on richard hammond. Hes recovered 100%, but, urm, this is what he looked like now, seeming he was crushed in a car:

phuck cough, are you on drugs to think Kryton is richard hammond, his voice isnt even the same.

--

I wouldnt believe any thing the press says, Ive heard so many different stories, you could make a book out of them.

Lets hope he does get better, and doesnt give up TV.

Yeah, I've watched every episode of RD since it first started (erm, almost 20 years ago...) and I really really can't think of a link... I mean he isn't even English is he?

Quote: "I don't understand why celebrities are put on a pedestal"
Er, no reason, but Top Gear is *very* popular, he's pretty much a household name over here, and it wouldn't be very interesting if I said my Uncle Idris died when he fell of his roof (which he did a few years ago) as no-one would know who I was on about.

I don't recall any sort of connection, I think it's pretty clear that this dude:

Presents Scrap Heap Challenge, played Kryton, and is by no means a hamster. His voice has been used in some adverts as far as I know though, and it is quite destinctive.

But if a scrap van fell on his head, then we'd feel the same way.

I think it's the simple fact that people like Llewellyn and Hamster come over as fairly genuine and likeable, not at all fake or conceited, and it doesn't hurt that their shows are great. It's a similar scenario to how the Australian public feel about Irwin, basically if a celebrity dies or is seriously hurt it becomes aparant how popular or unpopular they are very quickly.

Nah, it's been going for like 30 years one way or the other. It will probably mean the end of the current version of Top Gear. Which is basically 25% car reviews and 75% amusing (very), and often dangerous, clips. Personally I totally preferred the amusing stories (eg. caravans and cars into boats) over the more dangerous stunts (sticking a car in a swimming pool or in the middle of that electric place).

Oh yeah, and on Wiki it says that James was supposed to being doing the record attempt originally. Seriously couldn't imagine that.

If so, I reckon it'd be more about the accident, and less about a missing Hammond - although the program is a helluva lot better with Capt.Slow and Hammond (Crispin was a total git IMO), it could certainly survive with just Clarkson at the wheel.

The thing that makes Top Gear so great, is programs like Vroom Vroom being such absolute crud - you need at least 1 likeable presenter in these shows, Vroom Vroom has none, Top Gear has 3. It's like comparing Jocks Garage (retch) with American Chopper.

So I don't think it's the end, unless poor Hamster dies (touch wood, finds head), but we're talking about a British institution here, you could chop off Clarksons head and people would still want to watch it.

Hope he gets better.

Only as a presenter, I'd much rather to see him alive and kicking doing Brainiac, otherwise it could mean the guy from test tube baby getting a promotion, and I can't stand the guy. Plus Rich is a legend.

I hate that guy from the test tube baby, most of the time I feel like hitting him, hes also a cheeky bastard, if he gets to host braniac, ill stop watching it.

If Hammond is up and about, then there is a bigger chance he'll pull through.

Don't need to walk to drive a car.

But yeah, Brainiac wouldn't be the same. Top Gear would be lacking, but only Clarkson leaving would cripple it totally IMHO. Anyone remember the custard walking episode? Wasn't Hammond, but that was the most jaw dropping thing I've seen a long time. God damn took 20 years from my age so I was acting like a teenager seeing a 286 for the first time

Clarkson is the only thing stopping me from watching Top Gear, cannot stand the bloke. I think Richard should get a 'sympathy' promotion to replace Clarkson and Clarkson to get a job on Vroom vroom instead.
