I just got this email from Caligari. I think this is a horrendous piece of advertising!

Quote: "Make your own MMORPG!
Make the next World of Warcraft with trueSpace6.6, gamePak and Realm Crafter for only $249 -
save over 60%!

Developing your own Massively Multiplayer On-line Role Playing Game is no longer a million-dollar endeavor! Until October 10th the chance to break into making MMORPGs can be yours with trueSpace6.6, gamePak and Realm Crafter combined for only $249, with Shipping and Handling at no charge. That adds up to an incredible savings of over 60%!

"

...and so it goes on!

I can see it the Caligari forums now....

Quote: "Hey i just got Truespace 6.6 and game Pak and Realm Crafter and i have a great idea for a mmorpg and it will have 20000 players and you will be able to fly and cast spells and nuke the world and loads of stuff.

so how do i load a model?

Don't you mean

Quote: "How do I make my guy jump?"

"Load" and "Model" implies some kind of understanding...

Wow. You can't advertise something like this unless you can actually prove that it can be done. It's nothing but game making snake oil. Caligari is smoking something powerful, and for a price we can all smoke it too. They should be ashamed.

They do claim that they have a user who has done it. But then again, there may be 2 people on this earth with matching DNA too

Like identical twins???

Yeah, this sort of advertising does leave a sickening feeling in the bottom of your stomach. Mind you, there is a part of me that thinks anyone foolish enough to believe they can make WOW on their own with a few cheap tools deserves to get ripped off.

Perfect example! Even identical twins' DNA develops different "phenotypes". In other words, one twin might be able to develop a MMORPG whilst the other one can't even spell it

I think they are fairly priced engines/graphic programs out there, they say hundreds, well they've looked at the cheap stuff

i know eclipse very well,as i use it fro like,1 or 2 years.its fairly good, but limited in some points too.

but you still need to spend years to make the MMORPG...to call it an MMO i'd see 100+ maps and well,a server that holds more then 2000 people.but Eclipse servers are getting troubles at 100 people.it gives an Runtime Error 6: OverFlow error.

So Eclipse is more for Hobby people.Realm Crafter is there to make it a little more serious,BUT for 100% serious projects,i'd rather go and code my own engine.

I think this is as bad...

It's free? Really? What about dev costs? Bugfixing costs? Server setup and maintainence? And who paid for the ad?

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

One thing that this will definitely do is further trivialize any amateur MMORPG effort. There will be a zillion MMORPG clones, and they'll all be the same - same graphics, big download, very limited server load, and no actual RPG game, just an online nerd convention. It will cause any effort by honest indie programmers to get put into the same toy category.

I'm just glad that it's never interested me. The time for innovative indie-type MMORPGs has passed, now it's a hugely commercial venture. You simply can't compete against something like "Lord of the Rings Online". If you want to make an MMORPG you need corporate money.

Well, I can vouch for trueSpace, it is a nice piece of software, but an ad like that is horrible... Sure, it technically is possible, but it is HIGHLY (I say that with great fervor) unlikely. There is such a large scale of work that no one person can make a true and decent large scale (like WoW) MMORPG without years of work, not to mention you need more than tS6.6 and realmcrafter to make it. What about textures, sprites, and menus... Rather a blah world to have random colored objects running about.

Well, I just got realm crafter and my friends and I have been messing around with it. I must admit it's fun. Not serious, but it's fun being able to include my friends in my game more than just voices and story and stuff. (as they dont know coding or modeling)

Not sure I totally understand here... from her interview it seems that she merely became a tester for realcrafter, and so she didnt really make any WoW like mmorpg, but instead of gets paid to make them and to test the software, but isn't that basically what they did before she was around, though I'm sure most other users were more of the wannabe`s., perhaps it's just because she mentioned gamespace?.

I have recently talked to some other developers at a conference in Austin and there is a bit of talk about Multiverse as being a great option for hobbyists as it is free unless you make a commercial product in which case you then have to pay a licensing fee:

http://www.multiverse.net/

Also, I met with 2 other developers, one from Australia:

http://www.bigworldtech.com/games/fantasy_photos.php

and another which has attracted some attention from the big boys:

http://www.play.net/playdotnet/platform/

Both Hero Engine and Big World are simply badass systems. Hero Engine crashed repeatedly at the conference however the tools which came with it are simply phoenomenal. The cheaper of the 2 is Big World, which quoted me a starter package of $700,000 USD.

Okay then, I will, so how often should I do it, when shall I stop? I can be really really annoying if I tried, would that help .

The terrian is pretty cool, you can do that sort of thing with Torque as well, and as DC said DBP soon, but whats wrong with having a good ol' .x terrian with your own texture, I'm sure it would be one way to avoid that ugly texture stretch on steep terrian.
