Holy crap.

There should be a few justifiable expletives in there but anyway, on with this horrible thing I've been experiencing all morning. Anyway, please read through all of this, and if we can solve the issue, you might want to keep a note of the solution somewhere in case this happens to you... this is an ugly one.

So this morning I fire up the Vaio to hammer out a few hundred lines of code. But I notice that everything is mysteriously running unbearably slow. Then "the message" comes up... "Your computer is out of memory" (well, it didn't say it like that, but you know the thing I mean, where it says you need to run disk cleanup and whatnot). I should have around 40 GIGS free on my hard drive, so this immediately caught my attention and put a gross feeling in my reproductive parts. Anyway, I immediately run Trend Micro, which has been able to easily detect and exterminate viruses, worms, spyware, adware, and all of that garbage, and it does it with great prejudice, well worth the $20 a year. But it came up with nothing. AVG: nothing. Spybot: nada. Adaware: no dice. I ran everything my computer has, and usually that solves any virus/ worm issue, but it all came up dry. So then I figured I would try to find the worm myself. I went into the XP Search thing and ran a full search to locate every file on my computer over 75 megs. The search didn't find anything suspicious... pagefile and the hibernation thing were the biggest files (besides games and whatnot). Stumped and frustrated, I ran it over again, this time paying close attention to the names of every single file that popped up. After ten long minutes, it came around to "My Shared Folder."

Bingo: 40 GIGS of pornographic zip files, all with really naughty names that I can't repeat here (or anywhere). I left search and went into the C Drive, and sure enough, there were around 65k+ zip archives, each around 500-600 KB in size (too small to detect with my afforementioned searching method), each seemingly virus-free, according to all of my virus-scanning stuff. I tried to delete them, but it was useless... there's so many that it would literally take me a full day to get rid of them all. I have no clue how they got there, or how they snuck onto my computer without my noticing, since I *never* leave my computer running while I'm asleep or even away from my desk for longer than 30 minutes, and it should take well over 30 minutes to move that much data onto my hard drive.

I'm assuming this is a worm that works its way into the computer, plants a bunch of zips (which appear to be porn, but I'm not silly enough to try and open one), and eventually fills up your hard drive until page file doesn't work anymore. What's strange is, the files are all dated from July 2005, same date and everything... so I'm assuming this must have been hidden and was set to open itself today. Yesterday I ran my defrag (the 40 gigs was there, no problems whatsoever) and everything appeared to be normal. But the defrag couldn't have initiated it... I defrag once a month. Any suggestions on how to get this crap off of my computer?

Ouch. Are all the zips in the same place? If so remind me again why you can't just "del *.zip"?

If all the files have exactly the same date and time, I'd say suspicious.. i.e. probably not even valid contents (they don't contain anything I'd reckon). If they're all different, perhaps your PC was turned into a porn dump site

I've had something similar, but it just had a porno app that wouldn't budge, then this thing came up about illegal porn and stuff, so I thought, bollocks, I'm not going to mess with thia crap and did a reboot.

Hope you kill them all, and hope the people who made the worm lose their genitals in some horrid accident before they can use them for anything but arm/hand exercises.

Going by the amount of data, my guess is that the worm/trojan has created the files on your machine once it got there, rather than download them. You say your machine was unbearably slow, so it was probably creating them right there and then.

The worst case scenario is that it has zpped up your files and password protected them (Cryzip virus)

I'm thinking I should find a way to clean the zips before I delete them... in case the worm is imbedded in some system file and deleting them will just cause the worm to repeat itself. A similar thing happened with the Dr. Watson Postmortem virus that I tangoed with a while back. It's definitely suspicious, each one is almost identical in size, most around 533 kb but some as small as 503kb and others as large as 609 kb. I'm wondering if the worm generates these itself, like if it's a program that generates tens of thousands of archives with porn names from a list and piles them all onto the computer. They were all made on the exact same date, at the same time, in the same location... it just doesn't add up, because they definitely were not there before today. The question is, what in the heck do I scan with if AVG, trendmicro, spybot, adaware, and even norton (which I never use) can't find it? I'm running the e-trust scanner now, I'll let you all know how it turns out. Maybe I'll get lucky and this will squash the worm so I can delete the files and get on with my life or maybe it's just wishful thinking lol.

I need to find the source of this worm, find the people who made it, and kill them Kaiser Sosa style . There's a fun video for youtube.

edit: Bat, you said that while I was typing hehe. It's good to know I'm not alone in thinking the worm generated this crap. It didn't even cross my mind until you just said it that it could have been generating this stuff when my computer was being slow this morning... it was 7am, not much crosses my mind that early, other than "cook eggs, smoke cigarette, drink coke, watch cnn." Not that it would have helped much if it *did* cross my mind, because I wouldn't have even known what to do in that situation

Here's my hypothesis:

This was probably caused by running some program you downloaded from a P2P network. Worms like this generate lots of randomly-named files that are likely to get searched for and downloaded a lot, and sometimes add a shared folder in your P2P program. These aren't real files of course, I bet if you check your folder options and uncheck "hide extensions of known formats" you will see they are actually EXEs. This is how the virus spreads, by looking like legit files then people open them and find out that they actually executables b/c they have chosen to hide extensions of known file formats.

For example, I can asign a winzip icon to an application, and name that application porn.zip.exe, but if you hide file extensions of known file types, this file appears to be a regular zip file b/c you see a zip icon and "porn.zip". Same goes for .avi or .rar or anything.

Quick and easy way to get rid of them is to drop to a command prompt, navigate to that folder and DEL *.ZIP (or more likely DEL *.ZIP.EXE) because the command prompt is a zillion times faster at deleting than windows explorer is. The virus/worm probably also altered your list of shared directories in your P2P program, check that also.

You still most likely have the virus to deal with, it's probably either a new trojan (that your viruscanner doesn't yet have a signature for) or a rootkit that has stealthed itself.

Good luck.

Coke and a cigarette! In the morining! Yuk!
Each to his own I suppose!

Sorry I can't really offer help!
I have my laptop that I use for practically everything that never gets connected to the internet (It still runs fast!) I use the old hunk of chunk that can run progams requiring 2.0Ghz processors on a 1.1Ghz Duron! Its so old that shutting down take a good 5 minutes! But its so tough that I don't think any virus trojan or worm would come near it!

Good luck with getting rid of that terrible worm! I hope I don't get it!

@ Happy: Stop changing your name lol, you're confusing me! I had Trendware Micro and AVG running, those usually work fine, I think sirfire is right in that this is something new that they don't have updates ready for. I need better AVP's

@ Sirfire: You're 100% right, they were all exe's. Last night I expanded everything for full names wondering if maybe one of them was cloaked, and that would be the virus... nope, they were ALL executables cloaked as as zips I deleted them all, and it freed up the 40 gigs of space, but now I need to figure out how to find and kill the worm... and the "worms" who made it

@ Vader: I'm addicted to coca cola hehe. I drink it with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When I die, I'm willing to bet the autopsy will show that coca cola replaced all of my red blood cells lol.

So now I have my HD back under my control... but finding the source of this problem is going to be next to impossible. I tried to think of everything I've done on my computer in the past few weeks, trying to find a trigger other than the date (still the most likely trigger I think; it was probably set to go off on or after a certain date). The only real changes I've made recently include the installation of Gangsters 2, the download of Poser 5 and Bryce 5 from those recent giveaways, and I re-installed BF42's Desert Combat mod because I was having a log-in error. I haven't used Bearshare in a while (two months or so). HJT isn't working for some reason, so I'm going to reinstall it and put my HJT log into a code snippet and post it here.

Vanilla Coke reminded me of Kaopectate (or however it's spelled), the stomache medicine hehe.

That's just it though, it doesn't appear that anything bad is running right now. That's why I need to make a Hijack This log, but HJT is having some sort of trouble, and after attempting to reinstall it didn't seem to fix it... I'm wondering if the worm somehow targets HJT or something, disables it or whatever :/

Jolt?

@ Matt: You could re-format your computer! Or that might take to long.
Did you know that coke burns like acid?

- EXPERIMENT -

1. Fill a bowl with coke
2. place a steak bone in it
3. leave for 5-6 days and when you come back it will be mostly eaten away!
I like coke but finding out that it can kill you by burning away your inside put me off! Though it does work wonders on the BBQ!

But again each to his own!

@darth, put a steak bone in a bowl of stomach acid and come back a day later and you will end up with what 5-6days of code did.

[edit], and also if this worm/virus is software level then I recomend you download this neat app called 'auto runs' it basically scans the registry for any apps that will run on startup, I used it to remove some trojan I had a while ago, though I reformatted anyway.

I can't reformat... no OS disc Sony didn't even package a recovery disc, it's all built-in, which is neat and all but it makes me a little weary (like the PS2, if it stops working and they can't tell me what's wrong with it over the phone, repairs are free for life including shipping costs, so I can't really complain, although ugh, should have an OS or at least a recovery disk). Also, 160 gigs is a lot of stuff and it'll take me a million years to get through that lol, better to hunt down and exterminate the worm

Jolt is a cola, although I haven't seen it around here in years. It has 1.5x the caffeine of coke, or something insane like that Great for long coding sessions, bad for everything else hehe.

We had a discussion recently about coke versus water, didn't we? A few months ago perhaps? Anyway, coke isn't nearly as acidic as myths claim it to be. The same experiment can be done with orange juice... give it a whirl Oh, and the "coke disintegrating a nail" thing is false as well, we did it in science class and it proved false, and I seem to recall the mythbusters doing it with the same result. If it were that acidic, the FDA would put a ban on it, or at least I hope they would. At any rate, I've been drinking coke, hand over fist, since my youth. I still have all of my teeth and besides injuries resulting from a car accident I'm in great shape. Don't buy into the hype Darth! Enjoy Coca Cola!(c) hehe

I hate to point out the obvious, but you've tried booting into Safe Mode and running the anti-virus proggy's from there, right?

I've seen a number of AV proggy's get either stopped, or rendered useless (returning 0 results where there's clearly something wrong) that can be gotten around by booting into safe mode and running it.

Oh, and Vanilla Coke - Bliss! I love the taste. They still have it at my local Vending machine (on Campus at Uni) for only AU$2 - cheapest I've seen it for years.

Always Coca-Cola.

600mL = 20.28oz (according to google.com) bottles for AU$2 = USD$1.49 (according to xe.com), or USD$1.5 (according to google.com)

Having said that, you can go to the supermarket and get the non-refridgerated 2L bottles for AU$1.80, and the exact same bottle that's refridgerated for $3.20 or something like that.

Funny, isn't it?

(The answer's no, no it's not... Not in the slightest. This is a serious thread about serious things, why would it be funny?)

Here is an article about creating a WinXP restore cd without the original. I would guess though, that if you
have a virus, you may transfer it as well.

Isn't there some program that will create WinXP recovery discs? For me there was, which is good cause without them I would have had to have actually bought WinXP.

Seriously, find that program and create them. The fact that you haven't got any way of recovering from an HD format is quite shocking.

Oh come on Oneka! There's only so many hours in a week! What could any single human being do with 40 gigs of porn! The only reason anyone should intentfully have that much porn on their computer is because they're trying to remove their [expletive deleted] from their body! lol

After deleting everything in that folder, the computer has been acting rather normal. I spent the whole day yesterday working on my new website without any problems, so I'm thinking (well, hoping) that everything is going to work out with it. But I'm remaining vigilant and I'm going to re-install HJT later this afternoon and get a proper log, then I'll post it here. I'll do anything I can to avoid a format because, well, 120 gigs of useful, mostly necessary, files is a serious pain in the butt to copy... that's a whole lot of DVD-R's

As is well known, I'm a keen advocate of the virus and other malicious code writers basically being chucked in prison and not being let out for many years.

We can all pat ourselves on the back. If malicious code writers are the evil guys, we as game writers are the good guys. They are the Sith, we are Jedi. Thats because they bring pain to people and we bring fun and happiness.

I would advise you install avast, then uninstall it and get avg.

I had avast running on my server pc and eventually got a virus, but avast found it sure, but it only deleted the main file, though the file itself made copies of itself that avast didn't find, so now I have avg.

Sorry, just had to point out that the title to this thread doesn't really have the impact it's meant to (to British people at least).

'Queen of all viruses' or 'Mother of all viruses' would be fine, but alas the Queen Mother was a mad, doddery, old semi-racist who is now dead, and is therefore not particularly frightening.

I have AVG, Trendware Micro (imo the best spyware/ malware/ adware/ virus/ worm catch-all program I've ever seen, it isn't even designed to find viruses and worms but it does, sometimes), spybot S&D, e-trust, and Adaware. Where can I find this Avast? Is it free? How often do they update it? AVG usually doesn't let me down

Only us hardcore coke fans can double-fist 2-liters And you KNOW you're a hardcore coke fan if you drink the little bit of coke at the bottom of a 2-liter, the coke that fills up the little "bays" where the footies for the 2-liter are, then you know you're a true coke addict!

I just spent five minutes trying to activate it. The only light I can make it emit is from the num lock/ caps lock/ scroll lock lights and the volume/ mute/ hibernation buttons

She was a racist? Mad? Doddery (I don't quite know what that means but it sounds bad). The media over here in the states painted a completely different picture hehe.

It's been days, and this virus hasn't seemed to do anything. I'm thinking maybe Rich was right, that deleting them all may have gotten rid of the problem... but I dunno, I still have a feeling that something evil is lurking in the dark shadows of my hard drive clusters.

Ouch Benny... they aren't that expensive. My HD is only 160 GB, I'm willing to bet it's one of the smaller HD's on here hehe. I need to get a second HD with 300 GB or so.

Chris... you lost me

@Matt: People like me are supposed to scare people. And by decorative, I mean:

I have 2tb total storage. With everything I barely use 100gb. W/o porn... I would look like I don't use the pc that much, lol.

lol couldn't you fill up that space with something that doesn't chaff?

I think it's time for the ultimate test... I'll go out into the street with my keyboard and start thwacking people over the head. Eh, I guess then I'd be on the dark side

I dunno, I'm thinking music maybe Or games, big games But I mean if your lady friend were to go digging through your computer spying, as lady friends tend to do, and she were to stumble across this megolithic bounty of booty, she might say "wow, Steve has a problem." Then she might feel inadequate and buy five dozen pairs of shoes to compensate for what she feels must be her own lack of sexual appeal, when in fact she doesn't understand that it's only their for aesthetic value and isn't being used as a tool. And then your relationship will all come crashing down, all because she located this horribly large collection of naked females, most of whom probably make her (or anyone) feel inadequate.

lol wow, it's scary that I just imagined all of that happening. I hope I'm not clervoyent (sp).
