I've been skating for about a year and a half now, but I've bene using a crappy walmart deck for the entire time, the bearings are shot and the thing is just ugly, not to mention it doesnt help my skating at all.

So now that I've picked up a few tricks and am pretty good with my crap board, Im lookin' into getting a new deck, I've heard decks that are more concave give better pops on your ollies, which makes sense, but I dont want something too concave, I searched around and decks that are about medium pop are Alien Workshop, Chocolate, Girl and Black Label.

I found some cool decks from AWS, they're usually like 130-200 bux but since Im buying from an Ebay store theyre only about 60. Im just wondering if anyones got some tips on decks that might suit me, like I said I need something with a medium concave to it, I dont want any beginner styles like BAM (Element) and preferabbly not something like Girl .

So... is AWS a good deck to get? I've seen it advertised a lot around the net and its got soe awesome designs on the bottom, I just dont wana get it and find out its a complete beginner board forcing me to get another one...

Any tips appretiated,
- RUC'

when i am buying a new skateboard i usually do this:

you would need to look at your feet.
get a board, stand on it, and see if your feets are too large or too short. i like it when i can have approximetley 40cm between my left foot and my right foot (i ride goofy) it would be like ~70cm long.

some boards, like girl, have a thinner edge. i don't know what that is good for, but i guess girls prefer it . anyway like Element (what i'm riding now) you have a lovely large edge where you can put your whole foot on while doing tricks. it is also a lot easier to do casper stand and other stuff when you have a bit more to balance on.

also note that it isn't the board that create the tricks. it is your trucks. i love Tensor, they are powerfull. if you like to do flips then get tensor

i have been skating for 7 years now, and the only trick i know is a 50cm+ ollie :/ i can't even land a kickflip. so i guess i'm pretty noob. but after i bought my Element board i have definetly improved! i used to ride noob boards, like the one you get for $25 etc. finnaly i got a job and bought a $200 board. so you reall get what you pay for now i can do alot more tricks like 360, kickflip, varial flip, big spin and more

though where i live it's all flat, there's absolutely NO place to skate. so i usually train on flat land, like casper and stuff. but that is WAY too advanced for me yet.

good luck on finding your board online though. i would prefer to go in the shop and try them out first.

ps. i'm the only one where i live who skate so it gets lonely and i cant try cool stunts out incase something would happen :/

When buying a new deck, I usually look at around AU$99 to AU$200. There's differences, but not much.
If you can get the no-name brand that's the same stuff, it'll be cheaper.
Basically, you want to get a concave deck which is wide (good for doing flips and street tricks) or thin (good for doing ramp tricks or just riding normally).

And, that's Concave across, not length-ways!

But, that doesn't include all the other things - Trucks, bearings, wheels and shocks.

Trucks I'm not too sure on. You're going to be spending at least AU$50 on a pair (that's cheap), but you'll probably want to spend about double that.

Bearings is up to you.
Look at the ratings - Abec 5s are what I have, and they're fast enough, but Abec 7s are faster again, and I think Abec 1s are faster again (don't hold me to it).

Wheels are a concideration - If you're street skating, you want hard wheels.
If you're ramp skating, you want soft wheels (sometimes thicker, sometimes thiner than hard wheels - depends on the brand really).

Shocks are just a soft bit of rubber that goes between the truck and deck - good for hard landings and the like.

Have fun, and ask the people at the shop what's best (they generally know, especially if you're at a skate shop ).

Jess.

Right now Im just focusing on getting the right deck and using the stock parts that come with it, I know the trucks and bearings play a big part in how the board performs but I can buy them later. I went to West 49 and saw all of the same boards I've seen on Ebay but for 130+ dollars, and its not like Im buying used boards as this is a known ebay shop...

Im pretty sure Im gona go with an AWS, its got a medium concave which sounds about right for my neighbourhood and the tricks Im learning ATM, but @ Lukas about the thickness of the board from what my friends have told me Beginner boards = Thick and Element , I think it has something to do with you getting more pop from a skinner board, Im not sure.

Im trying to decide between these 2;

The first one is a complete I found on Ebay, the second is just the deck but Im looking for it's complete on Ebay as well. ATM I think Im leaning towards the first, there's no difference at all between the two except for the design on the bottom so it doesnt really matter, they're both AWS.

TY for the tips Jess and Lukas, gona take a look at that "Tensor" brand you talked about Lukas.

I've seen a couple of guys and my friends at the park using Zero boards, ppl seem to like those. Few weeks ago, some guy had an aluminum deck. I asked him about it, said its from Germany and he bought it on Ebay. Looked cool, but was loud as hell.

I've come to the conclusion that, unless you're sponsored and get free decks, everyone someday converts to blank decks. MiniLogo and most other $30 blank deck brands are perfectly fine. My last 3 decks have been blanks.

Skating has changed dramatically since I skated back in 1996 lol, a decade ago, dang I'm old I still have my board too, element with independent trucks with a phoenix on it... sitting in a closet under a guitar case collecting dust and cobwebs and unemployment checks.

Yeah don't you hate when all your best memories are from a decade ago? I'm getting to that point too...

Yeah, I heard the Beastie Boys on a classic rock station the other day and considered hanging myself lol. The first album I ever owned when I was a little kid was "License to Ill," and now it's 20 years old . The horror!

I bought License to Ill on cassette as a kid, is it really that old now?

I'd say once you get to the point where you break at least 1 board every summer, buy blank decks to save money. Until then, get whatever looks best!

Or.....buy a mountain board instead. Those are really fun and you don't have to worry about ollying over cracks in the sidewalks thanks to the huge Tonka tires!

ty for all the info, yeah Im not looking forward to that moment when I discover X-box is to my kids as Supernintendo is to me , ohwell it has to happen some time.

Im so stuck, I wanted an AWS but my "skater" friends are telling me a bunch of mixed info, some say Almost is the best brand for board quality (not breaking), others are telling me Black Label is the only brand to go by but dont give me a reason as to why, the net isnt any help as its telling me the best medium-concave brands are AWS, Black Label, Almost and some other brand, so... I think Ill end up getting an AWS.

I know the board doesnt make the skater but it certainly helps

Black Label is old, they were super-popular back when I skated. Most of my friends had either black label or element decks, the elements seemed to break less often depending on the tricks, but again... it was five thousand years ago

What about Powell, are they still around? I had a nice Powell deck about 6 years ago. I loved it. They are a great middle of the road brand if they still exist...

you kids, and your danged skateboarding!

...and did I miss the "go to ccs.com" in this thread?
They are very helpful, and the site is pretty good. Also, the prices are low; they run specials all of the time. You can also build custom completes. Which is picking out a deck, wheels, bearings, trucks, and hardware.

PS: Flips crack easy.

Don't worry about ollying over cracks on the sidewalk anyway, because its super easy.
