Hi all,

The last time there was a 'post a picture of your workspace / desktop' thread on here I couldn't take part, because my office was being redecorated at the time. But I figured why not start a new thread on the subject, as it's always fun and one of those things that changes on a semi-regular basis.

Anyway in a sort of 360 degree motion here are shots of my office, starting from the 'back wall' and turning around again. It has changed dramatically from my old office, but I love the way it is now (and yes, I do keep it that clean/tidy).

Spot the Futurama collection

My over-full bookcase, gorgeous printer and secret doorway

My shelving full of retro magazines, geek books, blank DVDs and binders. On the left of my desk is my iMac G5.

Moving around, the picture on the wall is huge (about 5ft long), and those are my most used books and my Mac. Free prize to whoever recognises the artwork on the back of my door without having to read the game title Special bonus if you know the artist.

My main working area, where I'm sat right now. That's a Belinea 20.1" wide screen monitor (soon to be paired up with another). Not too many geek toys on display here really, just my keyboard (an Enermax Aurora, utterly beautiful and so slick to type on!), and a Razer Diamondback gaming mouse on a Razer pad (white)

Moving around a bit that black thing in the background is a fireplace (this is an old 1930's build house, each room has one). It works properly, not that I ever lite it mind you.

And in the corner behind my desk is a seatee. That's my son (now 4.5 months old) incase you were wondering why a random baby appeared in my office.

Here's a close-up of two of my computers:

These two are Windows boxes. The one on the right is running the latest build of Windows Vista, the one on the left (the big black Temjin case) is running XP Pro. On-top is a standard 10/100 Netgear switch that all my various devices connect to, and a Netgear router which also provides wireless access around the rest of the house.

Those of you who remember my old office (where we previously lived) remember what a state it was with stuff everywhere. I prefer how I have it now, less clutter, more focus. If you open that secret door however there is a raft of bits and pieces, magazines, Atari STs, arcade cabinet parts, leads, spare graphics cards, etc But hey, that is what walk-in cupboards are for!

Cheers,

Rich

I saw the title of the poster before I read the next line, so meh, it's shadow of the beast, no idea of the artist. I expected there to be a few more old consoles/computer lying around to be honest. I can't post up a pick of my office as the other inhabitants my complain about the bright light

Here's 2 photos showing where I work. I use the computer on the left for my main work. The computer on the right is one I built recently and for now is being used for testing and backups:

I forgot to mention what is hidden very well - behind my iMac down on the floor (under the desk) is my file server. I built this because I wasn't going to tolerate losing any work at all! So it's a quite low-spec box really, a standard AMD 3000 CPU, 1GB of RAM, onboard video and a set of RAIDed SATA drives inside. I do all my work on my main PC, but all files, graphics, TGC sites, etc are held on this server. Early in the morning it backs itself up across the Internet as well. In my cupboard I have a replacement motherboard, PSU, CPU and RAM on stand-by incase anything fries.

It didn't cost me much to build at all, yet I can at least now be safe in the knowledge that my data is secure! I would strongly recommend this approach to anyone who has things to back-up. I keep all our family photos on here too, I couldn't bare the thought of them vanishing and I don't know about you, but backing up to DVD just doesn't appeal to me (it takes too many DVDs and I never get around to doing it!) - anyway just my suggestion/hint for you.

Do you use something like subversion for backing up your files? It can make your life so much easier, you can revert to older versions if you made a mistake, track changes, and makes collaboration with other people easier if you ever have to

I know, you just can't see them. Also remember this is my house, so what you don't see is my lounge where you'd spot a PS2, Gamecube and Atari Jaguar hooked up to our TV! In the cupboard there are three Atari STs, parts of an Asteroids arcade cabinet and stacks of random bits of hardware. I don't collect old consoles though, they don't appeal to me really! The bookcase is full of yet more retro computing stuff.. not to mention my loft, but heh.. I ain't going up there

Sure, I run svn on the file server and Tortoise on all my PCs (svnX on my Mac), but that only provides back-up against coding errors / deletion, it doesn't cover you against a hard drive failure or PSU fry-up!

All these workspace photos, and still no electronic imagery of the man himself!

There's pictures of Mike here and there, Lee in various forms including Pyramid-head, Rick V in his infamous FPSC serial number photo...but the fourth Musketeer remains elusive!

It was a significant investment, put it that way. But worth every single penny! Before I joined TGC full-time we used to have those Aeron chairs at work, and I just couldn't live without one at home but they cost hundreds, so I went for the next best thing really.

I would have to clean my room before I post my picture... It's... very messy, it wouldn't be so bad except it's alot smaller than most bedrooms, so it gets cluttered fast.

Don't worry matey. Happens to me all the time. Nice setup btw.

Ahh, here's my room that I setup when I moved back with my parents place. Soon to be eliminated once I get a job and thus get to actually move out. It's quite sweet actually and I'll be taking the furnature with me.

Couch is directly behind my compo, so has the surround sound speakers on it and perfect for chilling out on to watch a DVD or TV or whatever. I had to remove the double bed I used to have to fit it all in, but I managed to negotiate the use of the spare room for sleeping in. Sorted.

Because my wife plays it on the Mac while I play on the PC, we've been playing for about 2 months now and are level 30 Night Elves, and level 18 Orcs. We only get to play for a few hours in the evening, after putting the baby to bed, having dinner, washing up, etc. So at this rate we might level at 60 by 2008

Ha, the couple's WoWing thing is getting pretty common now. It's usually either both partners happily playing WoW together, or one at the PC and the annoyed other hovering over them. (Ruined a friend's relationship. I've seen it first hand!)

Funny enough, I just got the game today, which is why I plopped it proudly on my desk without even having it opened yet. Came with a month free...I wonder if some of the forum regulars still play? Nice desk overall.

Yeah I guess, we know a few in-game couples. My wife is a pretty decent gamer though, so it didn't surprise me she'd like WoW - that and hell you get to go shopping in it, buying clothes and rings and the like - show me a female that doesn't like that

We're on an RPG WoW server, but one in Europe so won't ever bump into you in it. Mike (TGC Mike) was a level 60 Mage Human before he closed his account.. it's addictive stuff I tell ya and a superbly engrossing game, if a little repetitive sometimes.

It's good to know all of the money we spend on buying TGC products is going toward useful stuff. If I saw drug paraphanalia or Paris Hilton DVD's or some other fideously-terrifying thing in the pics I would have cried for the rest of the night.

I need a digital camera lol, not that my workspace is awesome or anything but it would be cool if I could take a picture of it without running the webcam cable all over the place. I'm sure you can imagine what it's like already anyway, bunch of Radiohead posters and campaign stuff that didn't work from 2004

Here's my home office. Only one picture as I don't know how to upload more than one for a single post...

If you turned around from the computer desk, you'd see a wallfull of Music CD's, Film and Britcom DVD's, as well as books on technology, game design, film and screenplay production etc. Inside a fitted cupboard on the left is where I store my console collection that is not in use (currently in use is PS2, GameCube and NDS - which happens to be pictured above).

Quick! Someone take a picture of their computer with a picture of Miguel's post on your desktop! Then someone take a picture of that! What are those called again? Pictures of pictures inside other pictures?

Anyway, nice joystick Dink. I have the Saitek ST290 Pro, looks almost the same as yours. What model is that? Does it have a twisty rudder axis?

I have the Saitek Cyborg Evo. It has the swivel, 8 way hat, and "shift" buttons, so it's a very nice stick if you ask me. It would be cooler if it had Force Feedback, but oh well. I am very satisfied with it. I'd recommend it to anyone, best stick I have ever used.

I really like your studio rich, its however too small for this 6'3" aussie.
The wallpaper reeks of Uk ness.
The shadow of the beast poster makes me really jealous
the guitar rifts of that game still sticks with me today.
The billy lid as well makes me give you more respect, I cannot fathom the juggling of family and work you must endure.
The futurama collection is well cool as well.
The german chair you have as well just reeks of ubeh.

Yeah you'd not cope well in here - the ceiling is high enough to fit you in easily, but the back part of the room slopes down, so the back wall is lower than the front wall by about 3ft. It's just the way these houes were built nearly 80 years ago.

It's not wallpaper, it's a nicely subtle shade of blue paint not that the photos do it much justice.

Does it make your more jealous that it's signed by the artist? His son was visiting my Atari web site one day, and we traded - a signed poster for a CD full of Atari games I have an Elric card somewher too saying 'To Richard, from Rodney Matthews'. Damn.. he is like my artist idol

I will pair-up this monitor with another exactly the same soon, just not yet - need to save a few more pennies for it first Now I have an SLi graphics card it can power them easily without lagging.

Speaking of pairing up monitors, can someone just gimme a quick low down on the benefits of it? I mean, I rarely use my other compo and I have two monitor outputs on my GFX card. How does it work with two monitors? Is the desktop just stretched, or do you get two? How do games play? Do they have the same screen on each, or is that stretched? Is it mainly useful for multiple applications when you want to see both at once?

I realise this is incredibly lazy and I should just try it, but I know the assault course of cables I face to unplug my monitor, move it and plug it into the other compo. I can't be arsed unless it's worth it.

It's entirely up to you how you configure it.

When I ran 2 monitors I ran them as unique desktops, so a task bar on each, and I could drag windows from one to the other, or entire applications could be maximised on just one monitor. I would often run my email client full-screen on the left, and my main work app on the right. Some programs benefit nicely from splitting across both though - for example Photoshop works quite well, and you can have lots of palettes open and still a couple of large images side by side. You could also have a DVD playing on one screen, and work on the other.

Most games I found however only support one monitor, so one goes black and you play on the other. Personally I don't own any games that support dual monitors, but I guess stuff like Flight Sims would.

Hmmm. Cheers for that Rich. Sounds like it could be quite handy actually. I'm seeing potential for game dev seeing as I often have Photopaint, Milkshape, UU3D and DBP open at once. I'll give it a go and see if I find it useful ..... uhhh ... after lunch.

I've considered doing that for the sole purpose of texturing, like a nice big screen for your art package, and another screen for Deep Exploration, or whatever 3D preview proggie (you could easily make your own). It's a pain to switch back and forth.

In fact I'm gonna try that later, not long got a new GFX card and TFT, so I have all the required bits lying around.

I'd love to run two monitors. For game development the benefits are pretty infinite, imo anyway. For gaming I'd love it to, I'm a Flight Sim geek and it would be awesome to put my radio stack, warning lights, GPS, and throttle quadrant on another screen so I can pay closer attention to oil pressure, ITT, and all of that junk What would be uber would be to put the ATC window on the second screen so it doesn't pop up in my face while I'm scanning the skies for things I might crash into but I don't think it's moveable.

The ST290 is a great stick too... like you, I wish it were force feedback. It has the standard trigger, five "thumb" buttons (awesome for using differential brakes and pitch trim), and the standard hat switch. My only complaint is the throttle being positioned under my wrist. During approaches I often slump a bit to get better control, and sometimes I bump the dang throttle lever which often messes up my tach... ugh! I want the Saitek X52 Flight Control System... that's my dream stick! Every time I look at it I find myself drifting off into imagining the endless possibilities for flight sim nerds like myself... all of your trims, flaps, gear, all of it with simplicity. Gooey

What other company do you know that invests virtually all the money they get from work back into their job? Being able to play WoW at fall res whilst somebody else is playing too is just a side effect.

@Rich: That is a serously nice case(Despite the word Atari on it). The place you got it from doesn´t happen to ship to Spain does it?

@Rich (again )

I see you have 2 mice by your PC monitor. A wireless and a not so wireless... Is this so you can work twice as fast?

@Agent Dink:
Nice Joystick! I wish I even had a joystick let alone that one. (Boy, I sure am wanting alot this week).

Well, thank you, I guess I purchased something decent! Haha. It's not too expensive, I got it on Newegg for $32.99. Really a fair price, as had I gone to the store I would have ended up paying about $40 for something of lesser quality...

I know how it is to sit there just wanting stuff... I'm eyeing up a nice 21" LCD monitor and wondering how I can squeeze out $300... not to mention a few other things...

Well, now I have a techie question... What are the benefits of a Widescreen monitor? I can see the benefit in Windows, but what about for gaming? Does the display get all stretched? Or does it still fit the game into a resolution that won't stretch it? I really don't want to have to test all my games or play BF2 stretched out. So I was wondering if this was the case.

Edit: Oh yeah Matt, That stick looks nice! A little too hardcore for me though, I'm not a heavy flight-sim player. I like the more mellow sci-fi flight sims like Descent3 / Freespace, X2, stuff like that.

@dabip - The Razer Diamondback is a gaming mouse. Extremely high res (2000 dpi), fast, sleek, comfortable.

The Logitech MX Revolution is a better 'Windows' mouse.. cordless, great scroll wheel, comfortable, tracks anywhere. They're both plugged in at once.

In short - it looks beautiful! If the game supports a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio, and LOADS do these days, then you don't get a stretched display - you get a significantly larger one! I play all my games in 1680x1050. World of Warcraft looks great, I can see the landscape for miles to either side, Half Life 2 (or rather Counter Strike) looks uber, Oblivion.. well, that's just a dream really.

I don't think I've played a 'stretched' game yet to be honest, and unless I raid my 5 year old back catalogue I doubt I'm likely to.
