So, who's playing Defcon then? (Think Wargames, the film.)

The demo is free, and lets you play certain game modes, including multiplayer and lan, in a limited fashion. The download page only just recently came back up again, but there are torrents for the demo too, kicking around.

I just finished playing the tutorial (I bought two copies, but I've not played online yet) and I have to say - destroying the population of whole continents is one of the stranger gaming experiences I've ever had. The music certainly helps.

There are other game modes, including Office Mode, Diplomacy, Speed Defcon, Tournament Mode. I imagine we on the forums here could organise quite a scary tournament...

Ooooh! I was waiting for this one

EDIT:

Just played through the tutorial. Very good--- unsettling in a way with the music. How do I add more units once Defcon 1 has begun? Or is that when you have to just manage what you have. This is a VERY intriguing game.

I will probably buy it too

I can't wait to play this game. I'm going to drop a bomb on Rich's house. Not for any particular reason other than to just do it.

Here's a penguin for your troubles rich.

Juts bought it too! I LOVED Uplink - Darwinia wasn't fantastic (good idea though)... This is great. Just played the demo. I hate playing games like this where it turns into a clickfest (who can build/rush the quickest) but the DEFCON limits are a good thing I think.

The demo is good fun. WELL worth a tenner!

I'm a bit surprised that Tinker is playing this. Nuclear weapons are not very steampunk.

I suppose you COULD have a steampunk esq rocket. I'm thinking Margaret Rutherford and rockets built in castles and small European Dukedom-based states going to the Moon here. Or possibly Jules Verne and some mad Victorian inventer in a smoking jacket busily shovelling coal into a coalhole at the bottom of a rocket control room ...

... hmm. I must stop drinking this extra strong coffee.

*shame* No, it's not very Steampunk at all - but people are being remarkably unreasonable in their unwillingness to bring out more Steampunk games for me to play. Remarkably unreasonable.

It's sad, but not every spare moment of my life is engaged in Steampunk things - just most of them. And Philip - if you want rockets going to the moon, you might enjoy a short silent film from 1902 called "A Trip to the Moon". They don't make 'em like that any more...

Shame indeed. If I had fingers instead of paws, I'd waggle one at you.

I definitely think that you have a point about the absence of good steampunk era games. But you could always *make* a Steampunk game, hmm?

In the meantime, as some small consolation for awakening a sadness in your mind, I shall ensure that there is something steampunk esq in my Entropy. When it comes out (perhaps I should have said: "whenever") you'll have that to muck about with at least.

I played through the tutorial last night and have to admit I wasn't overly impressed - the AI in the final game was just too stupid (I raked up 85.9 million kills vs. his none). I will try it online and against the harder AI bots before I give up on it though. Shame because it looks beautiful too.
