Hi Guys,

I am in urgent need of some internet? related help. My problem is that I suddenly have lost the ability to connect to the internet with Internet Explorer, or use features like the Windows Media Player Online Guid or iTunes Store, nor have I been able to connect to the net to install Visual C# Express, so I can install XNA. Basically, I can't access internet related sections of my applications, and can only access the net via Firefox, and for some things need to use IE, because FireFox isn't supported for them. Plus, I need to buy some music from iTunes, etc.

Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Reset everything in IE to their defaults, run some ad-ware/spyware tools, and anti-virus stuff. See what happens then. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

I reset IE to its defaults and nothing changed. I'm trying to install SpyBot: S&D but it won't install because it can't gain access to the server, and my anti-virus supsciption just recently ran-out, so unfortunatly that doesn't seem to be an option, unless some can point me to any other good, free anti virus apps that I can use until then.

But thanks for the help.

If you have a genuine Windows, try using Windows Defender (Beta 2 I think). It's actually not that bad. Just slow at searching.

Defender beta 2 said my suddenly suspiciously sluggish (now and again) laptop was perfectly fine with no spyware or anything. Chuck SpySweeper on it and it found a good dozen or so. After that it all seems fine again. Stuff Defender I say.

Cheers

control panel/internet options/connections/lan settings

if you use a proxy, make sure it's set there
if you don't use a proxy, make sure there's nothing there

It was already set there before hand, so nothing has changed.

Well settings have been known to mysteriously get changed, I was just suggesting you check them.

Defender drops a file into your system that you don't have the option of turning off, even when you ctrl+alt+del. For that, I hate it Try Ad-Aware, it usually finds tons of stuff that spybot can't find, and you can't argue with the price... free Then again, spybot finds stuff that adaware can't find, so I end up using trendware micro, which costs money but finds everything those two can find and then some. Anyway, Ad-Aware is pretty good.

It definitely sounds like a browser hijack, which any good anti-spyware/ adware/ malware app should find and liquidate.

Flush any temp folders
Flush your browsers

Spybot Search and Destroy

turn on advanced mode
set the host file button twice for full protection
check the startup list for any red indicators
block the list of nasty sites twice
2nd click will appear to take a little longer but its adding the full list.

Lavasofts Adaware Free Edition

Do a deep scan if you have the time

Hijack this

Show us a log once you get to here.

You might be so lucky as to just reinstall IE from your Windows Disc after you identify if its Malware or a hijack etc..

ooh, I forgot about the HJT log, good call Indi. Yeah, between Spybot S&D and Adaware you should be able to kill this sucker And the HJT log can show us if there's any other bad crap that's on your system, or if this thing is a serious pest that refuses to die, then we'll have you killbox it.

AVG - Anti Virus Guard is a free, well, as the name implies, anti-virus. I think it works pretty well and is updated quite often. The guy who recommended it to me is a network technician for a phone company, and he knows what he's talking about when it comes to this stuff. The best part though is that it is free. Just google for it, you'll find it in the first few results.

indi pretty much hit everything I was gonna say.

As for checking your lan settings, don't bother. If FF can access the internet then its obviously a software issue somewhere.

There's always Norton anti-virus, if you don't mind losing every free resource available and bloated software.

Thanks for all the help guys but I got it fixed. It was a rather odd issue to be quite honest. Not one I feel like explaining. =P

FF and IE do not use the same internet settings.

IE uses the settings in "Internet Options", and firefox uses it's own set of settings.

If you go and put gobbledygook in "Internet Options", FireFox won't care b/c it doesn't even pay attention to those settings. IE, on the other hand, will no longer work.
