Hi,
AHHH my pc is all screwed up! Basically what happened is i installed linux to dual boot on my windows xp machine so i could switch bettween operating systems on startup. I installed linux but it didnt work i got a fuzzy screen so every time on boot up it said do you want to use windows or linux but as linux did not work with my graphics card i removed it. But by removing it i messed up my pc!

I removed linux by going to control panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management and then selecting disk managment and deleting all linux partitions.

But now my pc has stopped woking v !!! It gives the following error message

Has any one got any idea how i could fix my windows to work again?
It would be most appreaciated as i have loads of files unbacked up on it!

Please help if you can,
Thanks,
Alex

Try booting off the XP disk, and running recovery console. Not fun, but it has worked a few times for me.

It's because GRUB has been written to the MBR (master Boot Record).

What you need is one of the many apps available that can edit the MBR.

I suggest downloading the Ulitmate Boot CD and fixing it up with that.

What you want to do is set the MBR so that it uses the NTLDR (NT Loader) rather than GRUB.

Alternatively, if you boot from the XP CD and type 'fixmbr', it'll auto-fix the MBR for you

Jess.

does it matter if i use the Ulitmate Boot CD basic or does it have to be the full version?

Boot with the windows install disk, select repair and go into the recovery console and run FIXMBR

http://www.askbobrankin.com/fix_mbr.html

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

Supposedly, so long as you have a valid key for XP Media Centre (Shiny sticker on the side of your case will most probably prove this), you can download the official cd legally... sounds dodgy to me, but some people swear it.

If you manage to get one, just like most people say, boot from it go to the recovery console, select your xp install from the list and type "fixmbr", after that finishes type "exit" which should reboot. Remove the cd and xp should boot normally .

You don't actually need a valid xp key, but it just supposedly makes downloading the iso legal... >.< Don't quote me on this or anything; I take no responsibility if this isn't true.

What machine are you asking these questions from? A WinXP one? If so - google is your friend too...

Took me about 3 seconds to find that - looks pretty relevant. How to build a rescue disk for people who have broken their MBR's.

For some reason the good old phrase "Play with fire and you might get burned" comes to mind. Cant think why

I'm also curious why you'd want Linux on a Media Center PC?

Does anyone know anyhting about patitions? Basically when i installed linux it shrunk my windows partition to 50gb on my 120gb hardrive does anyone now how i can expand the partition the biggest it can be?

Thanks,
Alex

by the way it was PC 2 that i mucked i put linux on it but it did not support my graphics card and i was getting annoyed with the dual booting always opening up linux in like 10 seconds so when i switched my pc on i had to watch the screen. So i got rid of the linux partitions and it all stopped working. But its fixed now

Be more confident in yourself - its WHEN you mess up

As for your partitions.. My advice/2 cents..
Go to Administritive Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management and find the empty space. Create an extended partition to fill it up and then a Logical one to fill that up.

That way you get a 50Gb drive for windows + a 60-70Gb one for "data". That way when you reinstall windows you dont lose everything, unless you have one of those annoying restore disks which restores everything without a care in the world for data preservation

back up all very important data now before you do anything else.
a few dvds of saved data will save a lot of tears later.

Once you've followed indi's advice;

Pop in your Linux disk, and boot into its Live mode, then find GParted (the Gnome Partitioning tool), select your physical drive, select your partition, and simply drag its right-hand side as far as it'll go.

Hit Apply, and it should set your partition to take up all the disk.

Have fun

Thats very strange - its not like ATI's are rare cards. If you ever get the option, have you tried overriding it to use a standard VGA or SVGA driver?
Knoppix has a load of "Cheat Codes"...
http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes

Try using one of those at bootup to force it to use svga, or maybe just force it to use something simple like 800x600 to start with...

never throw away knoppix. Its a lifeline CD for when everything breaks. If you get to a point where window wont boot but you REALLY need to get something off the C drive onto another partition, pen drive or CDR then get Knoppix working!!
