I though I'd share this chart with everyone else.

I've been using Norton since the 90's. (yes I paid for it) I've been getting sick of how bloated its become. Although it stands as one of the best detection AV's out there, it doesn't quite remove it all. I wanted to try something less bloated and most people recommend either AVG or Nod32. Though, AVG is free, it seems to suck at detecting polymorphic virii. According to the table at the link above, Nod32 seems to be the next best AV to try for someone wanting to get away from Norton. Unless you run a DOS box, in which case stick with McAfee.

I tried Nod32, but deleted it because it doesn't like Azureus...

oh yeah, and

I think a very important factor when choosing AV software is how much lag it adds to disk and memory access.

I use Avast b/c I don't even notice a performance difference, unlike other AV software that introduce significant system slowdowns. I'm not talking about scheduled full-scans, I'm talking about everyday usage.

I've never liked Norton and find their software to be unstable and sometimes dangerous to PC health. Mcaffee (sp?) purposefully allows certain "endorsed" virii through. AVG licensing is a headache in my experience.

Phaelax - I'll stick in my vote for NOD32 here (again!) I too used Norton for years, and felt the same way as you until I read a report on NOD32 a few years back, switched, and will never change. The whole TGC team use NOD32 now. In all fairness I do use AVG on this very server though! But NOD32 is the shizzle.

I run them both, what exactly didn't it like? I'm not being smart with you, am just genuinely curious.

Massive cpu useage (100%), had to manually reboot.

Actually, I just did some checking and it seems this is caused by outdated java platform thingees - meh, wish I'd seen that a month ago

I parted with them after Peter Norton's influence seemed to wane. Yes, the products were all bloated then. Symantec created this nice JavaBeansSDK (can't recall its name att....)for use with Philips Microcontrollers. It was very bloated, but neat.

I am also annoyed at AV in general, but that is the nature of security...it also makes legitimate use more difficult.

I understand AV software needs to be there at startup, but all of the other garbage does not. (I am not only referring to AV utilities, I mean QuickTime for example...There is bloated software from a manufacturer whose software I used to revere almost...but, not now.)

Anyway, software system security is an area that I wish I did not have to spend so much time studying. I loathe hacking...I love black boxes, and figuring them out, however....

I guess they don't allow off-site linking. For those trying to find the results, from the main page click on "Comparitives" then find the most recent report; #11 is what I was looking at.

Speaking of security, that reminds me that I have to go register my classes. My major has shifted slightly from just CIS to computer forensics; recovering deleted or corrupted files, etc..

I downloaded AVG the other day after seeing it in Matts Worm thread and it did a good job of finding a few things but opening some folders can take 10-15 seconds now that its installed.

Edit: One it didn't remove is one that pops open a window to WinAntiVirus software all the time. I love that they give me a virus to load their page for antivirus software.

Now, that is a useful major!

Hobgoblin,

That'd probably fall under the categorie of either spyware, or adware, neither of which is AVGs specialty (get Adaware or SpyBot S&D or something to that effect).

I have Norton and SpySweeper running. Even my AMD 4400 x2 seems to chug a little now and again with it And I've tried mucking around on all my machines and it's basically Norton slowing everything down (one laptop took ages to send emails all the time). Even SpySweeper running with all the shields on doesn't effect the system anything like Norton. Once the new SpySweeper comes out with built in virus killer (beta at the minute) then I think I'll ditch Norton. Bloatwaretastic. Heh, although check out memory usage using that new cover view option in Itunes 7. Glad I have 2gb as 100's of MB can dissapear like nothing. Just to have a 3Dish view of the album covers....

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I refuse to upgrade iTunes past 4. I'm at 4.9 right now and I keep the setup programs just incase I need to recover a computer and I don't like newer versions of software. I just wish they would stop bundling quicktime with everything.

I'm gonna give the Nod32 trial a run, and if all goes well I'll probably buy it when the trial ends.
