Well either buy Acrobat, or I think there is an option to distill to PDF on adobe's site for $10 or something like that.

CutePDF is free and allows you to 'print' from any application to a virtual printer that creates a PDF

Acrobat is a bloated piece of crap that takes a half hour to open.

I use PDF Creator, it's free: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator

And to view PDF's I use Foxit Reader, it opens almost instantly, also free: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php}}

Get openoffice.org, perfect way to make your document anyway, and will export to pdf

Cool, didn't know there were free options out there. As a question how are the free ones at editting the PDF, or do you need to redistill for changes?

As for acrobat taking a 1/2 hour to open I have to say you must have a 33 mhz machine or something because for me it opens in about 3 seconds. (Version 5.0)

part of the OSX graphics engine is hinged on PDF.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/pdf/
you can convert to pdf from command line and upwards in most packages.
Even taking a snapshot of the screen is defualt exported to PDF.

There are some great options given and I would try them all.
As part of any developers toolset Open Office is indeed a good piece of software.

this other package looks pretty neat as well

The PDF format is really a 'one way' thing. You aren't really supposed to edit PDF's, but instead edit the original document and remake the PDF file. The full Acrobt package does allow some editing to fix spellings, add notes and some very basic layout changing but its not really what its designed for.

Version 5 is quite quick. Versions 6 and 7 are very big and clunky in my opinion. Plus I believe 7 tries to do automatic updating by default. Nasty.

I never noticed this personally, I have always just opened up the PDF (mine or someone elses) been able to make any changes (like Word) and resave it without a complete redistill, though I must say I have never used 6 or 7 (hell 5 cost enough without paying for updates)
