Its online only, it gets really boring after you leave the "noob world", so stay in it for as long as you can. I havent played it for about a year, but besides getting boring, its quite good.

I have it. It's about as exciting as a Nokia press conference.

I got WoW recently...going to open it up and install once I get my macbookpro and a bit more friends willing to get together and play.

Seriously though, Guild Wars is not for everyone. Even though it's an MMO, the world feels somewhat lifeless because it's not dynamic/persistant. Once you leave the main town, an entire private gaming area is created just for you. So you won't have thing like running into groups of other players during travels or large raids or even any exciting PvP.

(Old Skool MMO PvP isn't about getting together is organized PvP areanas and dueling. It's about going out into the game world, and attempting to jump as many players as you can. )

This is why Diablo 2 was so fun. You could announce hostiliy towards players, and then go mug them while they're distraced with other duelers. Or you can hunt them down in the game world, butcher them, loot their bodies, and force them to restart the game so they can get their gear back. Bwahaha.

I like Guild Wars, but yeah unfortunately only online.
When I didn't have internet access, I logged in at work and asked if they could release a patch so you could play it offline on your own and AreaNet said they had no plans to do so. (Which is a shame as it'd work quite nicely as an internet network game or even solo play)

While I find the game fun, it is really quite a basic game in design. i.e. Find a party either Human or NPC, go on a quest and that's it you're stuck with those people for the next hour or so while doing the quest.

It is cool, just wish there was a bit more to it than what there is. Look forward to the new chapter being released soon though.

not to mention you spend hours trying to form a team of people and when you finally get one and in the middle of a quest somebody say "g2g now. food. ttyl" or "g2g. friend is here". etc.

a really annoying game. i leveled to 12 and then stopped playing because it felt like i was playing one level a houndred times.

Yeah, I don't see a point in playing MMO with anyone other then friends and a headset. That's why I want WoW - so I could do my own little Leroy Jenkins instances.

I remember getting a guy on runescape, to follow me and my friend (both using team speak) into the wilderness, we then killed him and took all his stuff

I second that.

and that.

Missions seem repetetive, it's not a very "open" world (only certain paths to follow really). They thought they were being so creative when the made it where you couldn't see anyone else except your group outside cities, when, honestly, I think that's one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. Overall repetative, boring, overly simplistic (not enough to do) game. Only good thing I have to say about it is the graphics are decent and the graphical style is decent. That's just me though.

I play as Kenwryll Shadowstep, Factions Only.

I have to agree with most of the above: Guild Wars isn't the best game, has many shortcomings, and isn't for everyone. In comparison to other MMORPG's, it's no Diablo II, it's no FFXI, and I'm pretty sure it's no WoW, but it isn't always bad.

The world instancing they do is a nice touch: saves Bandwidth and keeps the complaining about Player Killing and "Notorious", Unique Monster Camping down, but as stated above, the world really does seem quite dry and lifeless without any player interaction outside of towns.

Generally, I only play it because my friends like it and invited me to play with them. While I admit it's fun when you actually have friends to play with, Quests and Missions are the same thing as in any other game: Kill X Number of Enemies, Find and Return X Item, Talk to X Number of NPC's, etc, etc, and most of the time you'll be relying on NPC Henchmen when you go out in the world anyway.

There are also the usual party gathering issues common in any other MMORPG. Healers are lacking. Each class pretty much has their own way to self heal themselves in combat, but people who specialize in the art of keeping the meat shields alive are few and far between in comparison to say...people who only stand there and shoot arrows into things.

Past that, the music is halfway decent, it fits the setting (well, for Factions anyway, and the setting needs the music: the scenery is quite repetetive), but the voice acting is horrendous. They give you an extra bonus in that your character gets to talk, but the other voice actors should be dragged out into the street and shot. Every time I hear the NPC Master Togo say anything, I want to carve off my ears.

But as Raven said, I'm looking forward to Nightfall. I hear the developers are trying to focus more on the adventuring aspect of the game rather than just mindless killing like they did with Factions, so if that means anything, might mean Nightfall will be worth purchasing.

This isn't an insult to you Gil, but this is coming from some one who plays Starwars : Galaxies.

-------------------------------------------

One thing is that Guild Wars is like Phantasy Star Online more than WoW - what does that mean? ITS NOT A FRICKEN MMO. It's an Online role-playing game, Arena.Net has tried to stress that, but alot of people are ignorant of it.

I like GW, I play frequently (at least I did until school started again), but WoW is more for someone looking for an MMO, because GW is not that.

Lol, I do agree that the missions are incredibly repetitive in that game, but noone ever did them (they weren't worth the money anyways). I think it was the fact that the entire world seemed to be linked, economies fluctuated, guilds battled, you could build cities, not at all a "simplistic game", a huge, interlinked world, and descent combat that made it such a good game for me. It really was like a Star Wars world, you could talk to others, sell them things, trade with them, fight them, join their guild, make deals, make businesses, about anything you could think of. Just stuff like that that I liked about it. I think it's just more that GW just isn't my style of game rather than it being a terribly made game that I don't like about it so much.

I soon gre tired of GW, the sheer lack of interactivity with other peers in the wilderness sections and the bleak main world just turned me off. Although I did like the combat and spell system. imo, if your not after the pay monthly subscrption that only warrants consistant playing which many other MMORPG's instill then GWars is a viable alternative.

btw, as a matter of interest Raven where abouts in Preston are you from. Its the first time i've seen a member from the same city on here
