As some of you know my dad recently passed away (and again let me be clear that I don't want to dwell on it or talk about it a lot on here... I don't want this to turn into a sympathy thread). Anyway, I'm getting my inheritance soon and I'm going to drop about $1000 of it on entertainment stuff. I need to figure out how I'm going to blow that $1000 on stuff that I'll make good use of. This IS NOT an "I hate Playstation" thread and PLEASE don't turn it into that, there's already enough threads for you to rag on the PS2/3 on TGC!

My PS2 stopped working last week. It outlasted every PS2 I've ever heard of, it was one of the original PS2's from the very first shipment and JUST stopped working, pretty good run for any console that's used every single day. It didn't even stop working because of mechanical failure... I accidentally broke it because, like an idiot, I dropped it while bringing it upstairs. Anyway, my PS2 is dead so I need a new console. So here's what I can do:

(A) Buy the new PS3 and still have about $250 or so (after tax) left over for new games and stuff

~or~

(B) A crazed $1k shopping spree where I'd get:
* A slim PS2 (I don't like them but it works I guess)
* Several new PS2 games
* Saitek X52 Flight Control System, the ultimate joystick for flight sim nerds who also play Battlefield
* Logitech Cordless Desktop MX5000, because my wireless mouse is nearly broken and my Vaio's keyboard is sticky from a coca cola- related accident.

And with option B I'd still have about $500 or so left over that I could spend on the PS3 when the price drops, so I could still play console games in the meantime. Which seems like a better idea to you guys? And please keep in mind that yes, I'm a hardcore Sony Fanboy. I might get the Wii also when it comes out but the only next gen console that I'm really dying for is the PS3, so please don't turn this into another "I hate sony" thread

Put the money into a high interest savings plan.

It isn't my whole inheritance, it's just the portion of it that I've allocated to my entertainment budget Most of it is going into a savings account... none of it will go toward stocks because I'm afraid of the stock market lol. In fact, I don't even like banks. Mr. Bamber might recall a certain headache I may have caused him because when I first started purchasing TGC stuff, my bank account was brand new (I got a bank account solely so I could get TGC products, how's that for devotion?) and my account was so new at the time that I had to send e-mail him a copy of my license to confirm I wasn't an identity thief In a weird, twisted way, you could say that every purchase I've made with my Visa, ever, is a direct result of TGC having cool products, lol

Get a 360 and Gears of War. Then get Bioshock, then Mass Effect, then Alan Wake, then GTA4 (with the downloadable episodes). Then get a Wii.

Probably about the same as a PS3.

But seriously, consider something other than Sony.

all i can say is spend it wisely. i'm assuming you're still a kid, and therefore im also assuming you may not see this sort of money again for some time. i'd agree with spooky in the sense of investing it for the future, maybe through a savings plan, or simply on something that'll help you a lot through life, ie driving lessons or save it towards you university course etc.

it'll make sense when you're in your 30's

I'd use the 1k to make something that would in effect earn me more money than I would have with the money I'd get - so then I'd be able to choose A and B.

Too heck with a console get a new guitar, consoles will come and go but the guitar can last forever. 50 years from now you will be able to pull it out sit down and play some tunes and always remember how you got it.

Just a thought.

Sorry to hear about your dad...

Hmmm, I'd pick B, but perhaps invest it in something useful as suggested before. You can make some serious cash on Ebay if you get a distribution license for a product. I sell casually on Ebay and make a few hundred dollars a month usually.

I would go for option B. The only thing about waiting for a PS3 drop is, you probably won't see one until late 2008 at the earliest. So you'll probably end up spending more money going with option B if you're dedicated to getting a PS3 soon (like next year). Most likely you'll have money to buy one regardless though, and like you said you'll be playing games in the meantime.

I wouldn't bother buying a launch PS3 though. It would be a pain trying to get one, and if they have problems you'll be stuck with trying to get it fixed.

Quote: "But seriously, consider something other than Sony."

again... I'm a Sony Fanboy. 360 isn't even close to being an option and the Wii is something for the distant, distant future and even then I'm not exactly psyched about it. Once more let me state that I'm only interested in the PS3 in terms of next gen stuff and I know how weird that makes me on TGC but when exactly did I ever fit in

Quote: "i'm assuming you're still a kid"

Nope, I'm 26 hehe. I should probably make it more clear that this isn't the full inheritence hehe, it's just a portion of it that I've allocated to entertainment stuff

@ Saikoro: Thank you for pointing that out hehe. But yeah, I'm definitely thinking about replacing my Les Paul. But not with the entertainment money, I have some more money set aside for "work" related stuff (work stuff being spending a bunch of money on TGC and stuff for making games), and out of that I might put some into guitar. I'm bored with drums though hehe.

@ Hobgoblin: Unfortunately, my guitar was drown when my last studio had a big pipe accident But yeah, I might... see my message to Saikoro hehe

@ Dink: That's a good idea too, the ebay thing, but that's more for the "use it wisely" portion of the money. This is pretty much a grand that I can blow on electronic giggly devices.

Come on Oneka, not everyone hates me I talk to Jeku via e-mail sometimes and Saikoro is on my myspace, and I'm genuinely cool with pretty much everyone I've argued with in the past... except Drew G, but I couldn't care less what he thinks lol. Anyway, sorry, but it's an inheritance, I can't give that away lol.

You guys are all pretty much thinking what I'm thinking, option B is the better bet. I'm not down with the new slim PS2 though, it seems too flimsy, I prefer the bigger, sturdier PS2's of yesteryear. The joystick is the part I'm the most excited about, as I spoke with Dink about recently on Rich's office thread, I've been eye-******* the Saitek X52 for eons hehe.

Does anyone know of a high quality keyboard/ mouse combo that has a wireless optical mouse and a WIRED keyboard? My keyboard never moves around... in fact, I don't want it to ever move around lol. But I don't want to get them seperately because it'll probably end up costing me more money. I wish they made keyboard chargers Especially Logitech, I love their gear but six batteries a pop to keep a high-traffic keyboard charged is quite a bit. And if anyone is wondering what I mean by high-traffic... take a look at the length of this thread hehe

Sorry to hear about your loss I know how it feels.

Option B, definitely. But, use the $500 on strippers and party accessories.

Or Option C, invest in Geisha House and you'll feel satisfaction that even the strippers and can't give you

hehe but aren't we, like, rival indie studios or something then again EA bought 20% of Ubi (I think it was 20%) so I guess it's commonplace hehe. But unfortunately, the only thing I can invest this grand in is smiles Not to get sentimental and stuff, but my dad liked to spend money on just having fun, like buying dvd's or going on trips or whatever, so I figured it was only right to blow this $1k on fun stuff as he would have done in my position But I'm not in the mood for a trip (Jersey will be ice-cold by the time I get the money in a few weeks) and there aren't any DVD's that I want that I don't already have yet (until DiVinci Code comes out, and American Dreamz looks funny too), so games made sense hehe. After all of the money trouble I had earlier in the year, it'll be nice to splurge on electronic goodies.

Edit: By Jersey I was referring to Atlantic City hehe, yes I'm a degenerate gambler but the boardwalk in AC is freezing this time of year, colder than anywhere else in this area... and I'll never understand why it gets that cold. Coney Island does the same thing... must be something with the wood on the boardwalk or something?

Buy a set of B&W speakers.
Or maybe a dvd player for the car.
Or be generous and help me make my down payment on a Jaguar.

500 for a stripper? You've been overpaying.

What do you consider as "freezing"?

Why get a DVD player for the car? I can't drive and watch a movie at the same time

Freezing is, to me, as a technical definition anyway, "a temperature at which point I can literally feel the cold robbing my soul." But I'm an indoor cat I don't like "cold," and to me, if I can't wear a t-shirt outside, it's cold. I'm talking like 50 degrees and I won't go outside unless I need to I hate snow, and I especially hate shoveling snow, and I really, totally, utterly hate my friends who love the snow and try to get me to play in it. Curse them all Anyway, after mid-october the boardwalk gets these huge gusts of atlantic city coldness, which I'm used to because I live relatively close to the ocean (by "relatively" I mean I could spend an afternoon there if I felt the sudden urge), but something about the boardwalk makes those gusts even colder . I dunno... in my humble opinion, the Atlantic ocean sucks. Too cold. The Pacific looks warm and nice so I guess I'm on the wrong seaboard lol. Then again, I'm willing to bet the Pacific is freezing the farther north you go, same as the Atlantic, so maybe I just need to shift my latitude or something.

And none of that had anything to do with me wasting my money. I'm too easily side-tracked

I don't know... this all "my father passed away so I'm gonna blow some of the old fella's money on junk, what should I get? (God rest his soul, because his money is certainly not going to rest)" leaves me a bit cold. The whole thing just feels a bit wrong being asked in a forum...

... having said that, I'd personally buy a Wii and a ton of games.

Honestly, I'd never spend that much on leisure pursuits. I'd certainly spend some, but not nearly that much. I'd use it to make more money.

Quote: "hehe but aren't we, like, rival indie studios or something"

Um, haha. There's no way to compete with me. Luckily we don't have to. We can both be ultimately successful without actually competing. Seriously, I don't consider myself to be in competition with a single person here. I hope that everybody eventually makes a killer game and makes money off of it. The success of others in no way undermines my own.

hehe I know Cash, if anything we're a community that helps each other, unlike other communities I could name *cough cough* gamedev *cough cough*

Miguel - Don't think of it as being cold about my dad's death. Think of it as me wanting to spend a bit of the inheritance as he would have wanted me to spend it, on fun stuff, because that's how he was. He always put fun before work, and family before fun, and I was lucky there because there's people who had dads who hated fun, or cared about work more than anything, or spent their money on booze or whatever instead of being with the family. I dunno, I don't want to dwell on the fact that he's gone, I'd rather celebrate all the things he gave me and tought me and whatnot. When I need advice, this is the forum I come to, about game development or about life-stuff. I guess it's because the people on here are (for the most part anyway) genuinely cool to talk to about personal stuff, but not as personal as a standing-right-in-front-of-me friend... that probably doesn't make sense to anyone but me lol. like, I can talk about it passively and get good advice without people saying "aww, are you okay?" and "I'm so sorry" every five seconds. I never knew how to respond to the "I'm so sorry" thing, and you'll notice that the people who said that on here, I didn't say anything back, not because I'm not greatful but because I don't know how to respond to it. "Thanks?" That always sounds wrong I think.

Anyway, I think I have this worked out. I'm going to go with option B... get the slim PS2, a bunch of PS2 games, the Saitek X52 sex machine... err... I mean... flight control system, and a keyboard/ mouse combo.

But still, does anyone know of a good keyboard/ mouse package that has a wireless optical mouse and a wired or rechargeable keyboard? Is the Logitech MX5000 package my best bet in terms of having a rechargeable mouse but a regular battery-powered keyboard? And how is it for game development? I mean how precise is it and what might be better for what I'm using it for (making games and blowing stuff up in FPS games)?

go to ebay and look of the seller "hoots loot" he was selling Unreal Gold Edition + Mission Pack 1 for a couple bucks! he has the absolute cheapest games! also, if you like to read, buy the book "Empire of the Ants" by Bernard Werber. if you like the book, buy the game "Empire of the Ants," based on the book. go to New York, and go to the Virgin Record Store. Absolute biggest music store in the world. i would recomend getting the Infected Mushroom CD's. If you like the Infected Mushroom CD's, then go see them in concert, absolute life changing experience. If you never lost your joy for building thing's (like me) hunt down one of the OLD Lego Pirate Ships, the OLD pirate sets were cool. Buy all sorts of cool colored lights for your house, if you decide you don't like the lights, you can always send them to me. get some BIG-A speakers for you comp with alot of bass and treble adjustments. get a real biug flat screen moniter for your computer. get a new printer, a fax machine, or copier. get a nice stereo system with 8track, tape, and CD support (for all ages of music). GET A RECORD PLAYER BEFORE THEY'RE ALL GONE! if you have a pet, treat them to something nice, it's not always about you. Redecorate your bedroom with a new paint job and carpet. I'm running out of idea's now...

Matt thats the nicest way to put it. I think it's great that your celebrating his life. And its great to hear what a brilliant man he was!
And about coming to the forum for advice, I know what you mean!

As to your question; I don't really know what to say! A because the PS3 is *new* but so expensive! B Because your getting alot more for your money? Personally I'd go for getting a Wii with a bunch of games and extra controllers, that way I could enjoy playing it with my friends!
But just for the record I will say B

Don't get anything, put it into a high interest savings plan. I know you have more that $1000, but $1000 is alot of money, you might find you need it one day. Stick it into a savings plan and forget about it. Then get a job and earn your nice stuff that way

Nicely said Matt, sounds like a great guy and you should have some fun with the money. Have to say after my Mom died we threw here a clambake/keg party instead of a funeral, glad to see others feel that celebrating a loved ones life is important. If you like casino's take a longer trip and head up to foxwoods, stay the night, order room service and naughty movies

@ Zaibatsu: Some decent ideas, but there's a few glitches in the plan: I hate going into the Virgin Store in the city because it's confusing... I get lost every time I go in there and sidetracked by all of the stuff I don't really need but need to look at. I've already got a nice-sized 5.1 surround system for my PC and it's already louder than I'll ever need it to be I don't have any pets yet And I have a record player, but all of my records are aweful... we're talking "frankie goes to hollywood" and all of the other crap I liked in the 80's when I was a kid, hehe.

@ Darth: The Wii won't be out for a while, and it's second on my list to the PS3. I wouldn't be the resident Sony Fanboy if it wasn't hehe. I'll probably get the Wii down the road, but for me, the Sony comes first, as odd as that makes me on tgc But yeah, I think option B is what I'm going to do. I'll probably get my PS3 after the holidays, it'll probably sell out super fast anyways like the last two did... I got lucky with the PS2 and reserved it early, but the PS1, what a disaster it was waiting around to get it. I almost always stick up for Sony, but I will say this: they always under-anticipate a release like there's no tomorrow, and that's one of the most annoying things that company's do, to me anyway

@ Kenjar: Again I should point out that this is only the "entertainment" portion of the inheritance... the part I've dedicated to blowing on entertainment

@ Hobgoblin: I've heard so many cool things about Foxwoods and even though it's relatively close to here I still haven't gotten there. That's a good idea... maybe I should go check it out, I can finally afford to do that. How many roulette tables do they have?

Back to the list for option B: The keyboard sucks. Everyone tells me that the Logitech MX5000 wireless desktop is aweful, that the bluetooth technology can't keep up with the fast-paced demands of an avid FPS killing machine like myself . On Circuit City the customer reviews say it's better suited for World of Warcraft than the games I dig, like BF and RS3. So I'm still at ends here... maybe I should just hold off on the keyboard and get a really nice wireless optical mouse, but with so many on the market I have no idea where I should start. I'd prefer to get it at Circuit City, rather than having to drive down to the city to get it at Best Buy. What do you guys use? What are the pros and cons of your keyboard/ mouse setup?

If I recall correctly there are 12 in the non-smoking area, the others are broken into clutches of 6 tables and 2 or 3 clutches each room so I would estimate about 64, plus a few single zero in the high stakes room. I usually just wander around looking for a table with a bunch of black or red on the scoreboard.

If you do head up let me know maybe I will make the trip down at the same time, I have a few friends who are always going there.

EDIT: depending on the day you go will determine how many of the tables are Open and minimum bets, wednesday afternoon you can find $5 tables. saturday night you might find a $15 table or two but most are $25 min

Ugh, so Foxwoods is a lot like Taj Mahal down in AC. I'm cheap and only like $5 tables hehe. But if I can get some friends to go I'll drop you a line and we can all meet up there, we'll teach those Indians a thing or two about Roulette!

Zaibatsu: I can't take down my Homer Simpson lights though Maybe I could string some up under or over those though. But my girlfriend makes all of the executive decorating suggestions here, the only freedom I get is with the office hehe.

I'm thinking about getting both of the new books from TGC about DBP. Anyone read those? Are they any good? Will I learn new methodologies and stuff or do they cover the same stuff as the Beginner's Guide?

Yeah I bet on orange!! Actually I do pretty well at roulette and if things come out even (I win as many times as I lose) I make money. Though recently I have been playing Baccarrat the true 50% chance game as long as you bet on the player. The tables in the non-smoking room are generally cheaper.

I always seek and destroy yellow ($10) and red ($5) tables. That color scheme, of red being $5, yellow being $10, and green being $25... who invented that I wonder? Like which city did it first? I've seen that color scheme on roulette tables in Atlantic City, Turning Stone Casino, and up in Niagara Falls, and I also saw it out west when my girlfriend still lived out there. Is orange $15? I usually walk right passed it hehe. I know purple is $1, but those are the worst tables, there's no sense of loss when you lose on them hehe.

I always play the same three numbers... 22, 29, and 33. 22 was my team number when I played soccer, and 29 was the number I ended with. 33 I just like for no particular reason hehe. But if I'm playing a $10 table, I'll play 3 on 22, 3 on 33, and 4 on 29, and if one of those hits, I just double it up in case it hits again. If I get up over $800, I usually spread it out to include 3 each on 12 and 16 (my birthday). When I get over $1k I start playing "Benecio," the nickname me and my friends give to 26, because that's the number that hits in the movie "Snatch" during the "Viva Las Vegas" cutscenes while Benecio Del Toro's character, Freddy Four Fingers, is gambling his fingers away I'm nothing if not predictable hehe, but if I find a table where my numbers are hitting, I can walk out of the Casino on a good night being up as much as $2k, and usually I'm up about $400 to $500, so it works out pretty well. Except those times I leave broke, but eh, that's gambling for ya
