hey guys,

after a long time to get (what should be soon) model pack 5 done and
dusted, Ive taken some short time to finish off my Orc model which i
started a while back.

in advance, i would like to apologize to moderators and sole FPSC users
for wasting this space with what would seem to be nothing to do with
fpsc, though some more experienced users welcome such posts from me,
allowing to show my work, i know some people (in these forums) like this
kinda stuff

anyway, here is a render of the model, i did plan a much more unique
cloth design, with lots of wraps going on everywhere, i might integrate
this later on...



im hoping i can normal map this one, but i never really have enough
concentrated time to do so, and my notebook keeps dying on me with models
600,000+ triangles, so i would need to jump over to a desktop

here are some mental ray tests with the head.

these tests were to play around with Sub-surface scattering, where
light penetrates the thin areas of the skin. you can see it on the ear,
unfortunately, most of it is texture, still looks cool though.



(i am aware of the skin material all over the hair and teeth, not much
of a concern though, it wasn't in the final render anyway)

in an attempt to get better as high resolution 3d sculpting, i took the
head into zBrush and just messed around for a while (still trying to
get a grip of the interface, grr) to try and get some half decent
results, i took the mesh back to max and rendered with the sub-surface
scattering again, and got this lovely looking render...(notice the red seeking
through the dark area)



(of course, not much compared to most zBrush artists)

so...umm, yeah thats it for a while, i already have some concepts in my
mind for a female warrior, as some may have noticed right now, you have
never seen a female model made by me, which is actually quite scary,
people may think the wrong things

hope you guys like! comments, criticism, improvements, suggestions,
insights, queries...shoot.

thanks, its just a shame my original post cant come out, its bloody annoying aswell, i could only post about 3 sentences!?

3rd pic - ZBrush I presume? And it looks like you have a nice skin shader there.

I still refuse to learn ZBrush's interface, but I've been looking at Silo beta, looks like it might be a good alternative until I can get my hands on Mudbox.

its not that awkward, the head was separate for a while, so you can simply hide objects to get a clearer space

Jon, in most of your threads, you put your work down, but I see it and think you could easily get work in a company, you should really try submitting a CV to a job site which is made for games, like I do with my piddly CV and example work. I betyou could get a decent job if you tried that.

Hey Jon, I like the Zbrush work a lot! I've never been a fan of the ultra-detailed Zbrush look. I think understated detail looks best.

Besides,pores and such would never show up on a modest sized normal map, and you could just as easily add stuff like that to the normal map within photoshop...

I like that model. i think the spike on his shoulder might be a bit bulky though. Hey Jon, just for fun, can you put that model in FPSC and see how much the framerate drops?

nice little preview of a female model so far:

though this actual model will have cloth wrapped everywhere, including around the upper chest and lower face/neck most of all, so this preview could be misleading, still nice though

im going to tell you the truth now, as weird as it sounds, i have never modeled a female...EVER, sounds quite gay, but i think it was the curvy anatomy throwing me away, but ive conquered it

why would it drop, its low poly

i also tried a new style of hand modeling, the results came out pretty good

still alot of cloth work etc. and maybe a hood

Jon- I was looking at the orc commander model and I still stand with what I stated earlier; I do have one comment/suggestion.

This particular orc looks closer to a human that an orc should. I think if the forehed was a bit blockier and the nose not so streamline and make the jaw a little bigger and defined it would give it the "holy hell I am going to be bludgeoned" effect.

thanks RF,

i was going for a more human-like orc, more sofisticated, as a leader of an army of the "typical orcs" i also wanted to make it less 'cartoony' and have a more natural shape, i dont know though

i might be making a more hunched back evil 'brute' orc later on, thank for your suggestion

started texturing the head...just thought i'd use this as a reason to bump this thread to actually get a few more replies

i rendered an ambient occlusion map and tweeked in photoshop...might be a bit dark, havent finished yet.



still alot of hair painting to do...(those planes are to be alpha channeled etc.)

another random render with ambient occlusion (i really should have waited untill i finished the head texture, it just looks like she's wearing something around her head, where the skin tex is



and yes, she has no feet right now

here is a character i have modeled for a college assignment (or i think it might be practice, none the less, im spending good time on it)

it is a Wolf-type dude.....dont ask.

basically i wanted to make some "scraggly" creature with a little companion (crow on the shoulder) with a nice cloth design and a big halberd



head texture so far:



(yes, i know the ear isnt textured right now )

...not so "scraggly" right now however

i have only just started the texturing (the head) but i keep having to help the newcomers, who had never even heard of 3d modeling before signing up, and straight away, they are thrown into 3ds max

well i was born on the 25th December

...seriously, i was.

i had to texture that head in PS CS2 at college, on a remote desktop, so it lagged like hell, thus my brush strokes were kinda mucked up, came out alright though. Im also not used to CS2, and one of my most used shortcuts has been taken out!

soon enough i will, im writing a range of tutorials in an attempt to traffic CG guys to my site, spread the word etc.

the one thing is that if i were to make a video, it is pointless to narrate it, because i almost lose all common sense and drift away when texturing/drawing, and ofcourse the words wouldnt be very helpful

e.g. "brush here....smudge there...brighten this"

lol, i used to do programming, mostly game engines rather than actual games themselves, there is just way to much seperate parts of a game to code that i just gave up, im better off making graphics and just giving them to the programmer to sort out

nope, im still using my mouse for textue painting, i havent gotten the hang of my wacom yet, might just be a crappy model.

i still prefer my 99p mouse from eBay, for now

Tablets are great for certian opperations once you get the hang of it. I made the mistake of buying a HUGE tablet off of ebay and it's too big to use all the time so it sits in the corner not used at all (sigh).

The new characters are looking good, Jon. The mowhawk on the orc isn't really working for me though. It looks like a part of his head more than like hair. Maybe increase the contrast in the map or use alpha planes to describe the hair. I mention this because the rendering looks trick with the translucent ears but the wheels come off with opaque hair.

The wolf looks like a grizzly bear, Jon

Ive tried making a wolf in the past, and it came out crap, so I deleted it. But if you make the ears a little bigger and the head slimer, then your character should look more like a wolf and not like a bear.
