seriously Jon. Your texturing is simply outstanding
If you do write a tutorial for UVmapping and texturing (but for Lithunwrap +PS), I am sure I am going to make that my home page

is it perhaps the fur colour? i mean, should i desaturate it to a grey, maybe then it would look more realistic, but then looses all its "warmth"

in the concept that i used, the sides of the head were plainly fur, so its most likely the cheeks causing this illusion

@ filya

thanks.

I'll make a texturing tutorial using photoshop for sure, and UV Mapping, though ive never really used any UV mapping programs, seeing as max has a built in editor, but the same concepts should apply, planar mapping and welding etc.

If you can, maybe angle the ears to look more swept back. The ear positioning says "I'm listening" but the face says "Imma eat you".

i realised i forgot to post progress on the texturing of that female head, still not much, but its worth a bump to get a few more comments, the hair is still very solid, and i need to paint alot of fine details, smudging everywhere, and i'll sort the alpha channel problems out on the hair around the face.

there is also a bandana type cloth that covers the mouth and nose, almost like that "assassin look"

remember, still working on the hair!!!

Hey Jon, these are really nice, and coming along great! I like the subtle skin tones on the girl's cheeks.

Since these are WIP's, your probably already know this, but on the wolf and girl model it looks like they could use a little cutting around the joints for better deformation, unless these are going to be renders only.

I also resisted a Wacom for the longest time. Then I finally bought a little 4x5, and it has made all the difference in the world. You also mentioned the hair...do you have any good hair brushes for photoshop? If not, Google "Nagel hair brushes", the're pretty awesome for doing all kinds of hair, fur, and stubble, would be great for your wolf model too.

Nagel also has a great collection of free skin brushes too, and with next gen textures at 2048x2048, they're awesome for adding detail to skin.

You should consider posting your stuff over at Polycount. Those guys can give you some tough love, but they definitely know what they're talking about. I've yet to post anything there yet, but just from lurking I've learned SOOOO much in the last few months.

EDIT: It looks like you've already used some sort of hair brush on your wolf model, and if not, then wow you're goooood.

thank you for the comments guys!

@ bond1

yeh i will do some more joint work when the time comes

i dont have any hair brushes for photoshop, i use simple solid brushes and smudge alot, then very small dodge lines.

and about Polycount, yep, im already lurking there, and i (appear to be) in the same position as you, i am waiting untill i can make a decent entrance (if i can call it that)

ive seen their members work, especially poop, very nice, and some guy who worked on scarface models, pretty cool, great inspiration.

for the wolf i mainly used a fur texture, though at first i made a simple oevrlay and smudged it to give a longer fur look.

Hey your finished Orc is just as good as stuff I've seen posted at Polycount, and it's totally your design too. I on the other hand don't really have anything presentable yet, a bunch of clothed humans isn't exactly inspiring... But I'v been practicing like crazy on the human muscle structure, and I've really progressed in defining muscle structure with edge loops, it's opened my eyes on how to model for correct deformation. The nice thing now is I have a bunch of body parts that I can use as a base for all kinds of characters, human or beast.

There's a guy there named Daz that made a bunch of characters for the recent 007 games, a young Sean Connery, etc. Used stills from the movies for reference, now he's got some CRAZY talent.

im also working on muscle structure, mainly the bicep and shoulder, i have seen an easy way to cut it out from one of my models, simply splitting a polygon into a tri can help to see the overall bicep pattern.

the name Daz sticks out to me, i follow Ben mathis a bit, and have a look in the freelance section to see whats making commercial quality.

i got the impression they frown upon black backgrounds in renders, which is perfectly fine, i dont like it some time, but it really relates to my characters (i think)

so you can start to see (the main orc render) that i am trying to lighting things up a bit, including the background. (just trying to relate to these guys before going in)

i like your characters, they have a realistic feel to them, though i read somewhere, the great thing about art is that you have the power to exagerate things, which is why i like the fantasy art genre, and these creatures, sometimes going over the top can help

though i still dont think i'll get far with future works unless i get to grips with normal mapping, work on games requiring plain diffuse maps seems to be slowly coming a thing of the past.
