Hi, I started using anim8tor today and i would like to post pics of some of my models because I need advice and tips on modeling. I really want to get into modeling because i don't like relying on other people. My first model isn't something to write home about, but here it is, a simple barrel. Comments are welcome.

hey thats pretty swell. If you go to Anim8or.com and follow the hand tutorial, then you can use the techniques in the tut. to make guns, etc.

Thanks, I will go to the site tomorrow, I think the best way to learn is to figure it out yourself though. I will post another pic soon. The polycount for the barrel is 254. Any more comments?

I am not a good modeller (or better put, an experienced one). Also, the only 3d modeller I have ever worked on is Milkshape. But here are a few things I can tell you :

1. 250 is a lot of polygons for something so simple. If you will play around, you will find out that reducing polygons on flat surfaces works wonders!!

2. Since its practice, I can understand. But for models made for games (I am just assuming) you can let the horizontal grooves (or whatever you call it) on the barrell go. It can be achieved using good texturing.


Again, this is what I think. But to be honest, if I were you, I wouldnt pay much heed to something said by a newbie to modelling

if you made that barrel by lathing, set the segments to something like 14, that looks like 30 or more.

that is still pretty high for a simple barrel. You should do somthing like 10 or 12 at the most so then you can place many of these barrels in game and not have to worry about frame rate.

how did you get the rim with the parts going outside the barrel. looked awesome! Texture it with some rusty stuff.

Thanks everyone for the comments, I didn't lathe the barrel, I made a sphere and then edited it. Here is a table I made. It is 24 polies. Please comments are welcome.
