Since this isn't a DBP problem I've posted it here.

I've just installed RenderMonkey, FX Composer, DirectX SDK and a few other things on my laptop and started tidying up the file associations (so that, for example, *.dds files open with DxTex.exe - the DirectX Texture utility).

Everything seemed fine till I tried to open *.tga files. Windows on the laptop just refuses to associate DxTex.exe with *.tga files. I tried the "Right Click then Open with" route (nothing happens), the "Right Click then Properties then Open with then Change" route (no joy again) and finally the "Tools/Folder Options/File Types" route. The last allowed me to define a new action (i.e. Open) and program to open with (DxTex.exe), but when I double click on a *.tga file I just get an error message saying the file failed to open.

All is not lost. I can open DxTex.exe first and then open *.tga files in the usual way from the Open menu item. But things were so simple on my old machine...

Anyone any ideas how to overcome this?

[P.S. To make matters worse, at some point in my desperate experimentation, I managed to delete *.tga files from the "registered file list". When I add them back again, Windows refuses to recognize the file type and gives me the usual choice of choosing a program or searching on the web. Well, choosing a program didn't work - but neither did searching on the web (I got the message that it couldn't recognize the file type which is weird because *.tga files usually open with DxTex.exe which IS an MS application after all!!).]

Suggestions gratefully received.
