I've been going through lots of games recently, sampling many classics I'd forgotten about as well as the new ones just hitting the market. Anything that looks interesting and such.

No doubt a number of you have also been doing the same, probably trying to get some inspiration for the NVIDIA competition.
Just so many games I absolutely love, but many for different reasons.

Just wonder what are your favourite games, and why do you like them over similar games in their genre?

Intel Pentium-D 2.8GHz, 512MB DDR2 433, Ati Radeon X1600 Pro 256MB PCI-E, Windows Vista RC1 / XP Professional SP2

My all time favourite game, Thief: The Dark Project!
a first person sneak and hide game. I absolutely love it

* why do i like it?
the AI is so fun to play around with.
you can do something and then the AI start to talk.
the AI can turn around 180 degrees, faster than light.
the game have zombies and tricksters!
the story is great!

* why is it better than other sneak/hide games?
it have a medieval theme
it have swords and bows, zombies, funny humans (again the ai).
you can build your own levels and play with the AI some more.

why not splinter cell?
did you see any swords in that game? NO!

I'm terrible when it comes to favourites, so I'll just give 3 of them.

Final Fantasy VII - Gameplay, flow and plot are its strength, a game with an intriguing and epic storyline that works like a good book, keeps you playing and interested. The gameplay doesn't stand out above any other RPG, but their system fits into it like a glove.

Monkey Island - Truly a classic in my opinion, nice style of graphics, funny characters, good story line and a good set of challenges to stimulate the mind, the second type of game that I love, something to get you thinking whilst making you laugh at the same time (which is useful if you get frustrated with a problem ) Plus it has pirates, pirates are cool

Sonic the Hedgehog - Basically all of them, I don't play many platformers, Mario 64 was fun and some of the Amiga platformers were great, but Sonic the Hedgehog offers some fast paced action, which is another important element I like in my favourites games, speedy action.

My list of fav's tends to change from time to time, but the three core games that always top the list:

BF42: The multiplayer is unmatched imo (I LOVE huge maps and tons of players). I have a long list of pet-peaves about it though: the classes are horrible, for instance. You should be allowed to mix-and-match kit items rather than having to choose a preset kit. And the kits are backwards on most maps... the soldiers in the European theater mostly used M1's, not Springfields, and that always irked me. And subs can only seat one person, and that sucks... some jerk can get in the sub before you, dive, and then you're stuck swimming around hoping that someone picks you up. But all-in-all it's my favorite game, and DC is my favorite mod.

Rogue Spear: When people say "Rogue," I think of the *real* rogue Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear. I love realism in FPS games... I like the concept of being shot in the leg and having a limp, or slowly bleeding to death from your wounds, and RS captured that beautifully. Rainbow Six 3 is a far superior game for a number of reasons, but Rogue is still my favorite of the series and constantly rivals BF42 on my personal list of the greatest FPS games in history

MGS: I love the whole series and idolize Hideo Kojima. I haven't seen any story-driven games made by other designers that can pull me into a story quite like he can.

Other games that constantly appear on my top 3: the GTA series, Fallout 2, Fight Night (but only because it's the only series of boxing games around... I'd love to make a boxing game someday, like a serious boxing simulation with real boxing rules and far superior mechanics... for now, Fight Night is the best boxing series around), and the MS Flight Simulator series.

Captive(ST): Mentioned it so many times now, but I love the technical aspects, the way you can snap your leg off and trade it in for a new one, but gadgets, the sheer volume of weapons available. It was just an excellent RPG with real depth, like deeper than most people would ever see. In terms of scale, it makes Oblivion look like it's sad little mobile phone counterpart - it would take 50 years continuous play to complete, I really appreciate that impossible goal idea, it's one of the few games that I still play regularly.

Bubble Bobble(All): Arcade gameplay does not get any better, tons of collectables and secrets, 2 player mode, 100 levels that take a good few hours to get through, and it's a game of extreme skill, kinda like a fun version of Manic Miner .

Pikmin/Pikmin2(GC): The best microcosm game imaginable, little guys and little beasties in a puzzle game. But Pikmin is so involved and deep that you can literally loose yourself for days - the Pikmin dudes themselves are cute but robust, and I think that gives a good balance, vital in a game where you have to throw these guys at monsters. It's a little bit sandbox, a lot puzzler, and a lot action adventure - hunting for treasure with your army of Pik's and battling scary monsters while keeping track of them provides nicely varied gameplay. If your running low on Piks you would spend the day gathering food to make more, or if you need a particular type of Pik you'd go down a tunnel looking for a flower to transform them, all the time trying to retrieve treasure. I'm hoping for a DS version, even with the low spec, sprited piks, and lower eye-candy quotent, it'd still freakin rock. Pikmin2 is a gorgeous game, some parts just stick in your mind and remind you why Nintendo do games right. For instance, the shallow drain water - you know how with drain water going down you get these smooth ridges on the water surface?, well there's this section in Pikmin2 where they have a drain like that, and it just sticks in my mind as the coolest water effect I've ever seen, understated and rare, but finding things like that on a supposed lowly past-gen console just amplifies it's effect.

Res Evil 4(GC): I'm not gonna go on about this masterpiece, but seriously, put an GC with a copy of Pikmin2 and RE4 beside a 360 with any 360 games you like and I'd still opt for the GC. The graphics are great, the gameplay is flawless IMO, the storyline and depth is the best in it's genre.

Farcry:Instincts(XBox): +Evolution of course... But hang the single player mode, I play online through XBC, my brother has his own XBox, so we link up and play online with about 15 regular players from all over the place. It's a lot of fun, and it's usually a great connection, no lag. The best aspect of these games is the map editor and the online fun - it's just very well balanced once you get to grips with it and a really engrossing game.

Well I have a few

Alpha Centauri: I loved the Civilization series and this offshoot is the best of them all IMO. pretty old but I still play it at least once a month and every now and then I will hit a groove and play five or six games in succession. I think the ability to not only set your research goals but to create your own units with what you have researched was a great feature I wish had carried over to Civilization. I also liked the storyline as a continuation of CIV II.

Starcraft: I love RTS games and still have not found one I have thought to be this good. Perfect balance of the units, easy to learn difficult to master controls, great graphics and a free server to play all helped make this the most worthwhile game I have ever purchased.

1503: I really like strategy games as you can possibly tell and this is the mother of all micromanagement, so many resources from raw materials to finished products and so many ways to play the game. Each player can certainly reach the same goal with a much different strategy.

Conquest of the New World: So old I think Bush Sr. was president, but my disk still works and I play it quite often. the exploration in this game is rather unique since not only do you find new areas or other colonies but if you are the first to discoversomething you get to name it (I love naming "Mt. More Girls" or whatnot). The combat system for this game is also very different from oher games and used a good looking 3d before 3d was the thing.

I could go on forever, but rather than describe them all I will just give you the titles.

Bard's Tale 1-3
Wasteland
Original Pool of Radiance
Neverwinter Nights (both the old AOL version and the newer)
Baldur's Gate II
Railroad Tycoon II
Heroes of Might and Magic 1-4
DDO
Majesty
Shogun Total War
Pharoah
Gazillionaire

I'd say multiplayer is the biggest attraction factor in my games...don't really care much for single player games.

And I am the exact opposite--- don't care much for multiplayer games. Single player is where it's at! Linearity!

Bubble Bobble because it was probably the first multiplayer cooperative game, which I still think is a great and highly underused idea. Because it's such a simple complex and simple mechanics incredibly thought out. Because it's graphics are colourful an full of "soul". Just an absolutely brilliant game.

Runners up: Terra Cresta (arcade) and Syndicate.

I have vague plans for World Domination

Ack! I love non-linear gameplay. I love having freedom and the ability to do whatever I want and go about missions in my own way. I don't like many linear games... there's a few, like Max Payne, but for the most part I like games where I can do anything I want, and multiplayer is an absolute must. I'm praying that GTA 4 will have some multiplayer modes... Multitheft Auto is sorta fun, but I'm willing to bet Rockstar can do it better I would love a gang mode where you have something like four different gangs rivaling each other for territory, like the territory subplot in SA, but with live people. And the racing might be pretty cool as well. When they made the XBox verison of SA did it have multiplayer like the PS2 version had? If so, that would be a good sign that both might have multiplayer in the future... would be pretty dang cool I'm predicting that GTA 4 will take place in Liberty City and will have the full state at your disposal, like SA did. I'm saying Liberty City because the GTA series goes in a distinct cycle between the three main cities, with the exception of the poorly-recieved GTA London. I said this same thing right after SA and someone said I was an idiot and didn't know what I was talking about, but I most certainly said the next GTA would take place in Liberty City and would either be on the PSP or the PS3... sure enough, I was right hehe. Where's my cookie! And Vice City Stories is being advertised already, so I'm positive they'll do an SA Stories on PSP and PS2 prior to releasing Liberty City on the PS3. I hope it has snow and stuff, icy roads would be fun I'd absolutely love to see GTA with seasons, how cool would that be!

Yah I know I'm in the minority here, but I prefer linear storyline-driven games.

I don't like when a game has a fork in the road, and if you choose path 1, you will completely miss out on seeing path 2. This forces me to go back and see what's path 2 later on.

I barely have time to finish a game in its entirety now, so there's no way in hell I have time to go back and replay games differently just to see new content and/or endings, cutscenes, etc. This is another reason why I hate unlockables. If I buy a game I want to play it all right away! None of this BS where when you buy the game you can only have 1 track for multiplayer at first (I'm looking at you Burnout Revenge )

Yeah, most game designers see this as a way to inject 're-playability' but I (like you) find it plain annoying. Often the game gives very little context to the choice you make too, making it meaningless and frustrating!

The first adventure game I saw do this was King's Quest VI, and Roberta Williams was gushing at how you can beat the game several different ways, and I remember spending hours trying to figure out where the branches were so I could see everything (much to my annoyance).

It's more an exercise in patience.

Of course this doesn't apply to strategy games where every time you play it's all randomly generated. Obviously that's a different kind of game.

That sort of non-linear play I'm not a big fan of. I'm more into the non-linear games where you can go anywhere and do anything, like GTA and the Fallout series, or the Rainbow Six series where you can plot stuff out. Did you ever notice that the games with two distinct paths often do that so if you play through the game a second time, it feels like a new game, but often those games aren't worth playing a second time? lol I don't want to name any games specifically here, but there's a WWII game that comes immediately to mind... a "big red" WWII game Worst $49.99 I've ever spent! Okay, not true, I actually paid money for True Crime Streets of NY, but this was the 2nd worst $49.99 I've ever spent

Thief: the Dark Project (i have all 3 though)

Why?
- Decent and fun AI, even comical at times
- Graphics are a bit on the low end but carry much detail
- Atmosphere is wonderful
- playing alone in the middle of the night makes you highly paranoid
- excellent story line
- gameplay isn't totally linear

Deus Ex (the sequel sucked)

Why?
- the best storyline in a game ever
- multipe storylines
- good atmostphere
- nice graphics, at the time
- many weapons, too many to carry at once causes you to make plans
- favorite music of any game i've played
- non-linear gameplay

Rise of the Triad

Why?
- enemies beg for mercy, if you grant it you get shot in the back

Matt Rock - I agree with you (wow). Games like GTA can't be linear in the way their gameplay evolves, because as far as I know you can still do every single mission if you'd like. But it's open-ended.

My 3 favorites:

Dungeon master: I've played it more than 200 hours, it was fantastic, so many things to do!

Deuteros: The best 4x game ever done! I've played Master of Orion 1/2/3, Galactic civilizations and some other very cool strategy games but none gives me more pleasure than Deuteros.

Samorost 1&2: Too short but these are not just games, it's ART! Wow...

My favorite games off the top of my head, just as of now:
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
*open-ended huge world
*do anything you want
*fun fights
*awesome physics/object interaction
*unique quests

Battlefield 2
*large maps
*lot's of people
*multiple weapons and unlocks
*fun vehicles (although I've heard most people don't like them)
*you can actually conceal yourself, like as a sniper, there's tons of awesome spots

Rome: Total War
*Huge armies
*Huge map
*Strategy plays a huge part, unlike most RTS's where it's just numbers (I've wiped out armies 4 times larger than mine, and I've been wiped out by armies 4 times smaller than mine)
*I like Roman times
*Actually carries out turn-based idea (not in battles, in large map) that I like (I usually don't like a game that has anything turn-based.

Pirates of Port Royale

Alltime Favorite Game: Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizzards

reasons- the funny dialog, the original concept, the simplicity that made it so much fun. i love everything about it.

Favorite new game: The Chronicles of Riddick- Escape from Butcher Bay

reasons- it is well rounded. it has intense actions sequences, very stealthy parts, a few scary horror sections, and very interesting storyline. it tells how Riddick got those eyes.

The most important thing that a lot of games get wrong is the basic feel of the game- the gameplay and physics and that.
I also like nice aesthetics, but i don't mean state of the art polygon counts and the latest special effects- just games that (timelessly) look and sound nice.
Cool characters are good too. I'm turned off by games with a preponderance of big eyed, spikey haired children, but am more likely to buy games with badass babes in.
I hate "unfair" gameplay, where the world, physics or whatever is inconsistent.
I also like a game that keeps you on your toes.

OK games i really like

Silent Bomber (PS)
Really solid gameplay
Quite fast and "twitch" based
good learning curve (although the last level is extremely hard)
nice graphics and sound: a likeable "world" to be in
a very badass tank

Wipeout 2097 (PS)
Really solid gameplay
Quite fast and "twitch" based
good learning curve
Lovely designs from the menus to the ships, levels, music

Psi Ops (PS2)
Pretty solid gameplay
Absurd player power, but which feels solid and tangible
Some cool characters
nice graphics and that

Some others I can't be arsed to explain yet.
GTA3 (PS2)
Zeewolf (Amiga)
Walker (Amiga)

Cannon Fodder, V2000 & Twisted Metal 2
All three for the same reason ... I keep going back to them over and over and over again. The graphics on all three are pants by todays standards but it is the gameplay that counts.

Cannon Fodder: You can do each mission a different way (to a degree) so completing the game doesn;t mean you have to put it down.

V2000: Has an almost impossible difficulty curve but the first few levels can be played over and over.

Twisted Metal 2: An OK single player game but a fantastic multiplayer experience. Get a friend round that has similar skills and you can lose an entire day quite easily.

Bloodrayne (the original)
* who doesn't like sexy vampire babes?
* mindless slaughter of nazis *engages slow motion and slices nazi head off*
* blood 'n guts (see above)
* the risque humor/mood (the Thule Priest of Shovel Spanking, for instance)
* weapon system was well designed

Unreal Tournament 2k4:
* twitch based combat
* extremely well balanced
* uber-stable engine
* onslaught mode
* the mods

AoE 2:
* ehhh it was fun (played it for two years)
* balanced
* unique races

I'm sure there's some others, but I can't think of 'em...

How could I have forgotten Cannon Fodder? Great game. I think the aesthetics are pretty top in that too.
V2000 was kind of a cool game, and i had really been looking forward it being a big Zeewolf fan, but without autotargeting it was too hard to shoot at things, and some levels were really annoying, especially when the guys got killed and the world went all dark and you were basically farked. It was far too hard to tell where airboune enemies were. It also suffered from some really horrible slowdown in places.
It had a really nice feeling world and generally solid feel though. I think if it had been slightly less annoying i would have really gotten into it.
Bloodrayne is a top game too, but bloodrayne 2 feels to have lost something.

Not in any order:
1) Legend of Zelda - Link to the Past (SNES)
- VERY long game
- Lots of dungeons to explore
- Big world map
- Difficult puzzles, but not hard enough to drive you crazy
2) Half-Life 2 (PC)
- Action packed the whole way through
- Decent story
- AMAZING graphics
- Physics engine lets you pick-up or/interact with almost anything
- Not just a kill-fest, you have you solve puzzles too
3) Counter-Strike: Source (PC)
- The most addicting game I have ever played
- Huge fan base (no shortage of people to play with online)
- Constantly updated and improved with new features and content
4) Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time (N64)
- Lots of dungeons
- Pretty good story
- Very long
- Unique characters and locations
- LOTS of secrets to go around and find
5) Super Mario World (SNES)
- First introduction of Yoshi
- Fun level design with many secrets
- Colorful graphics add a fun/playful touch to the game

I'm not who you think...

Just because you don't like Counter-Strike: Source or other Steam-Powered games, because of the retail platform doesn't mean everyone else has to treat it as a cuss. So ya know in the spirit of sensitivity to you... Shut the **** up, Roxas. :p

Yeah, guessed more than one of these games would've made the list here. What's always interesting are people reasons for choosing them though.

I've got a few games to cover myself, but I take ages to write these things so .. probably do it in the morning.
Favourites include: Killzone, Perfect Dark Zero, Tomb Raider Legend, Metal Gear Solid 3, Fable, Final Fantasy XI, Forza Motorsport, The Sims 2, Elite 2 : Frontier, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.

just a few games, so as you can imagine will take a while to explain why i like them all hehe

Meteos is just so frickin' fun. That's why it's one of my favorite games of all time. Oblivion is just incredibly immersive and has tons of depth to it - allowing for 100s of hours wasted in Cyrodiil. Kid Icarus just owns. Shadow of the Collosus is just an artistic masterpiece that is incredibly fun in its own way. Dead Rising has some interesting thematic elements that really add to the otherwise simple story (game-play is fun too).
