since you asking this question, I'm assuming your new. go download:

1.Gmax
2.Anim8or
3.Wings3D
4.Blender
5.U.V. Mapper and expirement.

when you get good at it, spend another two weeks practicing and then go buy Milkshape3D. after you get Milkshape down, you may want to get 3DS Max or some other better program.

$1000? Try 1400+ for the upgrade from 6 to 8. It cost me as much this year as my 110'x10 driveway repaving this year(lil less, not by much though).

Don't even try and buy this new(unless your a student)....it'll be your only toy that year, unless your well off. I think the full version is like $3500 or so....look at it like a new four wheeler or small boat.

Or you can get Milkshape and the Gimp and spend less than $30.

3DS Max 9 and PS CS2 together would put you well over $4,000 when it's all said and done. If you're new to CG art, that would be an insane choice. Suppose you find out CG (computer graphics isn't your cup of tea? Then you're out a huge chunk of change. I suggest you start with Fred's advice and work your way up the ladder. Here's a couple of lists to help you out:

3D Programs

2D Programs
