I got this weird message on start-up

The odd thing is, my copy is genuine, came with my PC which was made by Packard Bell a few years a go, there is no install disk, it just uses a boot up disk when I want to reinstall it, so I am confused why after my last Windows update, it would decide to tell me my OS isn't genuine after a few years of using it. So does anyone have any ideas why I would can this? Because I don't have a clue to be honest, perhaps I should contain Microsoft and telling them what lying lil gits they are?

Cheers

Someones using a copy of your product key, if, as you say, your OS is genuine. Phone up Microsoft, and beg for them to reactivate your copy.

How would they do that? Out of curiousity, the only way I can think really means Microsoft should have built up a better security around that sort of data...

cheers.

Fair enough, you sure it wasn't you? I'm surprised those keygen sites haven't been shut down, I came across a few when googling for a demo of Zone Alarm pro 5 because my disk was basically useless (But my code expired April 06, so I'll probaly renew that, but thats a differant subject)

I guess I'll find this keygen dude, ruff him up and call him a nerd, laugh at him and chant silly things at him...that'll show him...

Nah, its the other way round. If you already the key, they wouldn't be able to validate as genuine, not you. Besides, most of the keygens are built upon known volume licence ID's, not standard OEM or shop-bought keys.

Then thats more odd, because my copy is a few years old and was ready installed on the comp bought as new, yeah it has been reinstalled, but never really came off of the HD.

Has it been validated before or not though? If you have validated your code before, you may be OK, or this is some stupid glitch; otherwise, you may be a bit screwed - someone could somehow have the same code, and has beat you to it.

I personally haven't validated it, but it could have been after we bought it, as this initially wasn't my computer. So I wouldn't know. I'll see what Microsoft have to say about killing this reminder (I mean nothing has been done to my comp with it as far as I know) Lets hope Microsoft won't do anything evil about it when I contact them, I know what some customer services are like, arsey...Lets hope they're more in the region of Maxon's customer services.

Its possible the product code for the computer was a dodgy one created by the place where you got it from. Unfortunately you cant take it back and have a bit of rant, if its a couple of years old.

The worse case they could do is send around a few men in black, and give you an hours lecture on how piracy is bad for Mr Gates wallet.

Its another reason to get Maccified...

It could be just a bug in Windows. Updating may help solve it because before you can update it validates your windows.

Well, shame, I'd love to rant, but I think this thing must be 4 or 5 years old, I guess if the men in black do come around, I'll laugh at Will Smith, then I'll have hide all of mine hidden stash of 3DS Max CD's (j/k) and lecture them on the crappiness of Microsoft's service before they can lecture me on piracy, better yet I could buy a pirate costume.

hehe. Why do people keep propping Macs on a forum dedicated to a windows based programming language. It's like me selling bicycles to paraplegics.

Not the ones I know, they nicked me bloody wallet, I mean I'm better off trusting Rupert Murdock with a dirty secret than a care bear with my safety.

I see, well I guess Packard Bell or PC world get a slap on the wrists. I'll see what Microsoft can do, I mean if they send me a copy that would be good, meaning I have XP on disk, so when it does come to when I get my Mac I don't need to buy the XP disk later for boot camp (How many more times will Mac be bloody mentioned in this thread? Now saying that some wise guy is gonna say 'mac mac mac mac mac' you watch...)

You're a care bear? I think you can keep the wallet, I mean seeing someone admit something like that worth the 27p I have in there.

just remember if you do dual boot you lose the security of just mac, windows can copy virii related problems to the mac partition once the billy side is infected.

If you buy a computer and it has windows on it ... It should have the cd key sticker on the case or one of the books/cds that comes with it. If it doesn't, then phone them up and demand one. Assuming you do have the sticker, phone up microsoft and they will tell you what to do. It's been a few years back since mine tested pirated, but they had me send them the sticker in the mail and I got a new sticker and cd key.

Which would possible if Windows had any kind of access to external systems with different file systems... but it doesn't

Unless you have a clever virus which happens to carry a file system driver with it, but I somewhat doubt that will happen

(although you're right, because a virus could in theory infect the boot sector or something, but not necessarily the Mac partition itself)

Plus wouldn't I need to connect to the internet through Windows for Windows to get a virus, I would be doing all the internet stuff through the Mac side.

Good news, this morning there was a pop up with the warning, can't remember what it said (Yes or no sort of answer), I also let my updater do its thing and now it doesn't show anymore, no need to call M$ unless it comes up again.
