My birthday is coming up and I want to invest in a 3d modeller. I have milkshape and its been pretty good but I need something that is good for rendering and low poly modelling that won't give me trouble exporting to dbpro(animations and textures included).Im not planning on spending anymore then $400. If anyone could pount me in the right direction as to a package that would be good for me. That be great.

My father uses Animation:Master and swears by it for pro 3D modelling and rendering. Around $200 last time I checked.

Hexagon is pretty good from my experience. Also a lot of people say that Silo is awesome and I have no reason to believe that is not the case.

Well if they have a .X exporter then for sure it should work. I don't have the software on my computer, but I can maybe find out for you.

Ok I narrowed it down to silo and hexagon as they are the two that im most comfortable in. i like silo's interface better but hexagon seems to have more tools. Anyone own one of them? I like both but hexagons brush tools are really good for detail plus its uv mapping is better from what I here.Im going to use blender for animation and rendering as ive never come around to be good at modelling in blender. thanx for all your help so far!

thats not much of a hard descision, silo would be the obvious choice, but silo 2 is coming out pretty soon. I would suggest waiting for its release because you will hve acess to silo one and all its extensions as well when you buy silo 2.

hexagon2 is great modelling tool, except for a few uv wrapping seams which can be tweaked later, and i dont think it animates either.

blender is free but daunting at first because of the interface as well i think.
I heard truespace 4 and up would work with dbc/p, truespace 3 is free out there.
3dcanvas could do it.
Ive heard good things about wings as a modeller
unwrap 3d is another definate purchase, that tool rox[4]game files
theres a big list of 3d software on the 3d boards

I havent tried character shop yet but it appears to be save a lot of hassle.

Thanx guys! I think im going to go for silo, the price is great. plus I just love how you can custimize everything. Im going to use it in conjunction with milkshape and blender to make animated models etc. Also on silo there giving you the free upgrade to 2.0 if you buy now(not positive). As for uvmapping with silo is it any good? Just wondering i could always use lithunwrap and blender but It be nice to do it in one prog. THanx again for all your suggestions!

You're gonna hate me for this, but I got Hexagon 2.0 for $1.99 directly from Daz3d when they launched it.

Of course one had to be a platinum member to get that offer (which is 29 dollars but you get a lot of freebies). But, still, getting it for under $32 was quite a bargain!

$400? Add $100 and I would recommend Softimage|XSI foundation or the version of Lightwave they have on the Kurv Studio's website.

Hexagon and Silo? Well those are primarily modelling tools, I would assume he would want rendering/animation included, although both being top quality tools.

If you're going to spend $400, assuming you're new, I think you may like;

Milkshape or TrueSpace 5/6/GameSpace with Silo 2 or Hexagon 2, powerful modelling tools, with an animator (And a render with trueSpace.

My personal recommendation would be TrueSpace 6 with Silo, Silo for modelling TrueSpace for everything else, download the demo's and see what you like.

Cinema 4D is a great tool, if you want the features cheap, try
Softimage|XSI. If you think Cinema 4D is expensive

3DSMax is around £3000, Maya maxs out around £5000 and Houdini at around £8000 ($17000) The 3D business is expensive.

Nice, make sure you try the demos first, tips and appearance may not always fulfill what you want, which is why I have demanded Newtek send me their Lightwave demo as they're not hosting it yet
