I'm sure theres a lot more around than what i expect, and to my fellow brothers.. possibly sisters, i say:

Eid Mubarak!

I know that depending on where in the world you are, this holy day could come as late as wednesday. I celebrated today, and hell, i had a feast at midday .. well, tbh all i had was a packet of crips since breakfast ^_^

Happy Eid indeed! Two of the blokes at my work were off, but the other one was hyper and bouncing around with a big grin on his face. Enjoy your celebration.

From what i know of it, their fast during Ramadan is only from sun-up to sun-down.

(not saying that doesn't require self control, i've fasted for a meager 40 hours and can imagine a month of daytime fasting wouldn't be a cakewalk)

I got only about $40 this time, but I'm saving all my money so it won't be a problem

BTW, what does "Eid Mubarak" mean literally? I know there's a politician somewhere called Hosni Mubarak, so up until today I thought Mubarak was just a surname...

lmao, no, Eid is the Holiday we celebrate at the end of our month of Ramadan. Eid Mubarak means, "Happy Eid!" or, "Let's Celebrate Eid."

Well, the Chinese new year is end of January/beginning of February.

That's one example.

the islamic calender follows the lunar cycle, hence theres 28 days a month, and 12 months a year. the difference between the western and islamic calender shifts by about 11 days per year, hence ramadan comes earlier each year... soon it'll be in summer >.<

I found this thread to be well mannered and educational until you said that. If indeed we're sticking to the AUP in its most literal sense, then Goorf made an excellent point...

Anyway - nice sweeping statement. I don't want to tarnish this thread with a religious argument, but thanks for bringing the world slightly closer together with that one... I don't envy the next mod who visits this thread; you've got a tough decision to make

Back on topic:

I visited the Gambia once and our "tour guide" (i.e. a local dude) was observing Ramadan. We offered several times for him to eat with us, each time forgetting that he couldn't eat until after sun-down.

Well, I don't think this thread has crossed over the AUP line at all. That being said, it's not like I'm going to create a thread titled "To all Christians around here, Merry Christmas!" That's just looking for trouble

well, in comparison, EVERYONE celebrates xmas... ok everyone being excagurated, there are few groups of people that dont, but All christians do, most athiests do, pagans do, a few muslims do (for example I do, since half my family is christian), since Muslims also consider Jesus a prophet of God, and have a hard time trying not to give into all the winter supermarket discounts

however, islam hasnt had the same influence in the west that christianity has, i bet most people havent even heard of Ramadan or Eid, hence i had to use the title to get attention

anyway... NOW we're bordering religeous discussion...

I think with or without Christmas (as a Christian celebration), it's good to have a reason to get the family together at least once a year. As I've grown up, I've found it's quite a special occasion for all my family to be in one place at one time.

Whether or not you agree with traditional celebrations of any sort, you've gotta appreciate that they serve a very basic, family-oriented purpose.

Human nature offends me, now you had the choice to click on this topic that openly had "muslim" in it. You used the freedom you have to click on it and post about being offended.

Sorry, but if you're going to be STUPID enough to click on a link that is likely to offend; then you're opinion stands no ground, eh?
While I too find posts like this a little insensitive, the same can be said about those about Christmas, Good Friday, etc.

Still, I'm not going to post demanding it be locked because I don't agree with it. I'd bet that you're a Christian, would be quite typical; disgusting the way that so many claim the faith but will ignorantly black-list anything they don't agree with, without understanding anything about the other faiths.

Didn't mean to butt in, but seriously how much of a muppet does someone have to be!?

now YOU have gone too far Raven. Needless and sad. Just as bad as offended guy - what is this, an attempt to see how many people we can offend in one day?

I now also vote for a locking, simply because I can't see this going -anywhere- nice now we've had those two glorious posts.

And for the record, wether it was right of him or wrong, considering how many new "offensive" things seem to get announced weekly by the leaders of minority groups which generally attempt to take away the heart of my country and the fact that everyone buckles at the knees in an attempt to be polite and politically correct about it all - i'm not sure why one guy voicing an offence in the oposit direction got such an immediate grilling, talk about bloody double standards - the world is falling apart in an effort to keep itself together *sighs*

EDIT:

an edit for clarity - when i say offensive things announced, I dont mean announcments that are offensive (although some can be, but thats another debate that does NOT belong here), i mean an announcment listing things that offend THEM and the goverment or local communities tend to run around trying to fix to be all P.C. about it - like that time when the local shops stopped putting navity sets in windows during christmas time for example.

Further clarification:

I have muslim friends who I like just fine, if i have a problem with anything its the community leaders whos voices do not always coincide with the voices of the indivdule. I do not like what is happening in Britan atm.

aye, w/e lock it if you must, i got my message across in the very first post, its all over now >.>

im just intregued as to the lack of response formt he muslims int he community, I know for a fact theres several lurking around...

anyways, all i'm annoyed about is that they guy made a comment and didnt even attempt to justify it, so i cant defend myself in return, when people do that i'd rather they just kept their mouth shut

Oh dear, I guess this is how religion threads get out of hand. For once Raven was right if you see a thread that is likely to offend, stay out of it. Personally im not religious but I hope you all have a fine time in the same way I hope everyone enjoys themselves at christmas. Just lighten up everybody.

*sigh*

When I first read this thread, the moment it had been posted, I SO nearly automatically locked it. But then I thought 'would I lock a 'Happy Easter' thread?' too, and figured I wouldn't, so that would have been complete double-standards on my part. It also wasn't actively DISCUSSING anything religious (at that point), which is the only part that would make it against the AUP.

However, what I should have done is realised there are too many fuckwits on this forum for this thread to have ever been kept sane, and should have locked it because some idiots just can't keep their mouths shut (hi Locrian), which in turn caused it to spiral into hell.

For this reason, I do now have to lock it. And Loc you can have a short ban for instigating the downward spiral too.
