It was. Wii sports looked like a lot of fun.

But they listed the RRP as £179.99.

I think this is too high. Not because I want to pay less (of course I do! ) but because Microsoft could easily drop the core system Xbox360 price in the UK to that identical price (make it £30 cheaper) a day or too before launch and steal a bit of Nintendo's thunder.

@Redmotion: While Microsoft COULD drop the price, they're highly unlikely to do that this close to christmas as they're already making a loss on the console.
The price is kinda high (€250 over here), but that's the problem with being european

It's all money .

Really I think people spend what they're gonna spend, whether it's on console, games, controllers, or a new TV to go with it.

The Wii will sell because it's innovative, people have seen the 360 and what it has to offer, and since Halo on XBox, people I think are considering that as the best the machine can do. Halo came out with the XBox and is still the best title for it, people might change their mind with Halo2, but that's not out quite yet is it?, not sure when that's due.

Christmas is a funny time of year, people don't go for the same sorts of games, they go for party games to play with family, friends, take to parties, keep the kids quiet - the Wii will appeal greatly to these customers. The other thing that will be hube is those quiz game sets for the PS2, Nintendo should try and make some wirless buzzer controllers, nice and cheap, so they can strongarm Sony out of the running with it's antique 'black ash coffee table' style console.

£180 is the full package, plus a game.
Although technically there is only one package, they'll probably start selling the consoles on their own eventually.

I honestly don't see it as a bad thing, as there's no multitude of packages so it's hardly something that's crazy priced.
Look forward to getting one over christmas, cause they look like a laugh.

it's only $400 aud her ein aust, thats a normal price, your 179 pounds is like $40 dearer, considering the xbox is $500 for the minimal bundle and the ps3 will be $1000, i don't see the wii being over priced. the cube was the same price, etc etc.

But it's still not the all-things-to-all-people price is it?

Umm, it doesn't cost that much over here. They really cost about half that amount. But yeah, Wii for me.

You realise that an Australian dollar is not the same as a US dollar, right?

USD is different to CND or AUD

Still...
Xbox 360 - £200 / £280
Wii - £180
PS3 - £400 / £520 (although price still isn't yet set for Game just what they're expecting to price)

So ya know there's a SLIGHT difference in prices
Also you can expect the Wii to drop after initial market penetration. I've heard it's likely to drop to £150 after christmas.

Another thing, is that while the PS3 is being released with almost identical prices to the PS2, the other two consoles have opted for much lower starting prices.

Think about it.

PS2 - £400
Xbox - £350
GC - £250

That's when they originally hit the market. So they're getting much cheaper on the whole

GC £250?!?

Try £129.99.

Also, Xbox and PS2 both launched at £299.

Good to see you still boldly make up facts.

I'm sure to hell they were more. The only place online I can find details about release prices is Wikipedia, but remember destinctly seeing the Xbox on Game for ~£350 and thinking "WTF!?" cause I thought it was going to be <£200

Also remember the PS2 launching at a much higher cost, cause I got one from Japan which ended up being far cheaper (something like £210 incl. p&p) then sent it in for a recall and by some weird miricle it came back as an english machine. Feel sorry for the poor guy who got my jap one back

The GC I might be getting mixed up with the US price, cause I was still there when it was released.

There's no way Nintendo will lower the price of the Wii after two months. For one thing it will be the cheapest 7th gen console, so there's absolutely no reason to lower it. I can see 360 lowering soon as it's been out for almost a year, but that's it.

Yeah, in the US and Japan (isn't Japan supposed to be about £110). Nice.

PS2 was £400? Are you sure? I got one on release day and am sure it was £299. Memory fading these days though... I remember splashing out over £450 on an N64 and a few games on release day and almost crying with how bad everything was apart from Mario 64. Turok cost me something like £75. Thats about $140. For one game. About 10 years ago.... Think I was offered £5 for trade in about 6 months later. Still got it upstairs.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I remember buying an N64 for around £50 and getting an unboxed copy of Mario64 for about £5. I remember scouring many shops for Pilot wings, I picked up a gold edition Ocarina of Time for £12, and probably Majoras Mask (one of my faves) for the same.

Buying a console at the middle or end of it's life is much better value than being an early adopter - especially if it flops!

Which is why I'm getting a Wii in January not December.
Makes you wonder where the common sense has gone...

That made no sense... the console's price won't drop in the span of a month...

Anyways, Twilight Princess for the Gamecube has not been axed, at least this is what I was told by a PR representative at Golin Harris.

I read that Twilight Princess for GCN was delayed - it won't come out on Wii's launch day like the Wii version will.

Yes, it will be coming out closer to Christmas, but it is not gone for good.
