It's about one week until it comes out (I think).

Is anyone else excited about it? I am seriously considering getting a 360 for it. If they do a bundle pack, or I can find one on eBay, I probably will.

To me it looks like the first truly next gen game. The graphics are absolutely stunning, and the camera work is simply amazing. I love the feel as well, it's so heavy, completely different to Halo and HL2 which are more delicate. I've heard the designers talking about it, and aparently it's basically set piece after set piece, which sounds awesome for short-attention spanned action junkies like me.

It might be a huge dissappointment, like Unreal 2, so I'll wait for reviews, but everything so far has really impressed me.

I won't be getting my own copy until Christmas but that's the power of one month trials for Gamefly. I'm going to rent it for the span of 1 month because it looks amazing, but I need to get my Wii first.

I'm looking forward to this game, and not listened to much of the hype in-fact know very little about this game; but so many gameplay videos makes me feel damn excited about this hot new 360-only property.

Yeah, I pre-ordered my copy yesterday The collectors edition. It was only around 8 USD more anyway. Can't wait to get it! It looks awesome. I also saw the Gamespot video review. It's gonna be interesting to see how the multiplayer in it works too.

It does look sexy. MediaMarkt recently dropped the price of the Premium bundle to 299 euros, but I guess it went up again... must admit it was tempting.

I know nothing about this game really, but I watched the trailer. The graphics are amazing, but it didn't really look all that exciting, quite a few of the animations were really fast and stiff. Didn't really catch my eye at all except for the graphical effects. Just looked like another lame 3rd person shooter to me (personal opinion)

Has anyone played it yet? I was going to go to my local gamestore to see if they had a demo running today, but I was too busy. I try to make an effort to participate in all these hyped games, so I'll know who to listen to about future games like them.

Just got done playing about 2 hours of it.. Incredible game. I can see alot of people getting frustrated with it off the hop though, at first it can be a little intimidating as far the control scheme goes, it took me about 10 to 15 minutes to get used to it but took my buddy(less game adept) about 30 minutes before he got it down ok.

This certainly is not one of those games you can run in all guns a blazing, you'll die very very fast, the hide-and-seek-and-shoot is a very well implemented forced strategy.

Definately pick up this game, i think it's the first game i'd rate a 10. Solid performance, great graphics and incredible gameplay.

This game is freaking awesome. I played for about 6 or 7 hours today after I got off of work. The single player is very engaging, and the graphics are stunning. The multiplayer bests Halo 2's IMO, it's amazing.

To be honest the graphics aren't the best from the pic's i saw and well who cares about gfx now? i honestly wouldn't care it you sat me with RCT2 i'd still enjoy it and play it for hour's and i've got to agree with din did just look like any other

Listen guys, trailers and previews do nothing for games.. You have to play a game before you can truly judge it. Personally i dont think any of the Wii games that are coming out look good, but who knows.. once i get their wiimote in my hands and start trying some stuff it could be very neat..

It's sort of like gears of war, it looks the same as any other shooter out there but once you start playing it you instantly realize that it is very very different.

In any case, dont knock anything till you try it.

@Everyone else - I was disappointed by the new Splinter Cell, as it just doesn't feel like it belongs in the series. I'm selling it and getting Gears of War--- too bad there won't be a demo up on XBL though

you say that when we are entering the HD revolution. lets be honest, graphics are the sole purpose of new consoles, maybe a bit more processing power for the fancy gameplay and online etc. but its the main purpose.

I absolutely hate this f**king thing that came along with the Wii where games with gorgeous graphics are actively hated because of it.

As if having amazing graphics proved that it must have crap gameplay.

It's b****cks.

It's like suddenly your only a real gamer if you deliberately ignore the blockbuster games, and really get behind utter rubbish like Elebits.

As far as I can tell, that game has limited, unimaginative gameplay. Imaginitive gameplay is NOT crazy-hey-hey-fun-wackyness. Imaginitive, innovative gameplay is Half-life, it's Deus Ex, it's crafting and experience so immersive, and doing it so subtley, that nobody notices how you do it.

When I play a game I don't want gameplay - I'm sorry, GaMePLaY!! - shoved down my throat.

The single worst affliction of 99% of games is that they focus on making you experience a game. It's stupid. Film doesn't give you an experience of 'film' does it? It gives you an experience of whatever the hell the film is about. If it's Platoon, it gives you an experience of war, Finding Nemo an experience of adventure, Eternal Sunshine and experience of love, Memento an experience of memory and trust, One Flew... an experience of LIFE.

That's not to say there is no room for game in it's purest form, there is. I think Mario is 'game' in pretty much it's purest form. It is the equivilent of Crouching Tiger or Hero - they actually are amazing experiences of film, and the rest is supplementary...

But I'm fed up with the rest of it.

I barely play games any more because they all are games. You've played one, you've played them all, and yes that includes whatever 'new' things come with motion sensing controllers.

Sorry about that rant. Didn't really have anything to do with anything, I just wanted to say it I guess .

I'm not saying that graphics are more important than gameplay at all, I'm just saying that the gameplay bubble will burst just like the graphics bubble kind of has.

The 8800 isn't the kind of revolution I want for games, but neither is the Wii-mote/Sixaxis.

I agree with you a bit.

It's stupid to say Gears of War sucks because it looks so good. That being said, I also can't stand companies that design their graphics and technology before worrying about gameplay. I worked at a company (I won't mention the name) where we were doing a kid's racing game (think Diddy Kong Racing) on a powerful console. We were aiming at kids, and our models were very simple. Because it was a next-gen console, the producers kept saying "normal map it!" and other terms, without realizing the full implications of what it was. They didn't realize that the time it would take to normal map a vehicle in a cartooney game would be better spent on tuning the core gameplay elements.

Needless to say, I have the opinion that 80% of the next-gen companies focus on buzzwords and hype without investing the proper time in gameplay. There are two sides to the coin, obviously.

Gears Of War = Absolutely freaking amazing in every way possible.

At least that is my opinion after playing it, not that it really matters.

I also expect Lost Planet to be equally amazing.

I've been playing my neighbors copy for a few minutes on my HDD and played for a few hours on his. The game is amazing. It isn't the let-down Halo 2 was, it lives up to they hype. The A button's usage is daunting at first but quickly becomes natural. I hope to get my own copy during the week because I love this game. Lost Planet will be good single-player wise, I've played that demo god knows how many times and still love it. I'll be getting the multi-player demo soon (when it comes out on the 23rd) and can only hope it rocks.

Well, the industry does appear to have a very short memory, especially as of late, where clone after clone appears to great success without anyone even batting an eyelid

Are you sure? I've read about a dozen reviews of this title, and even bought it for myself (with a free copy of the Outfit), and there has been absolutely no mention of kill.switch.

I wouldn't say that Gears of War is a 'clone' of Kill.Switch, however yeah it does use a very similar gameplay design. Not identical though, those subtle difference actually end up making a huge difference. It's also much easier to control.

(they've got Gears of War where my lass works, and I've been messing about on a copy the staff opened early while waiting for her to finish ^_^)

I'd say it's more of a typical fashion to Epic SinglePlayer. Not tried MultiPlayer yet, but the SP is quite good. It's quite a lot of set peice action sequences seperated by cut-scenes.

It feels a lot like Killzone did on the Playstation 2, as it's a game that doesn't really add anything new to the genre; but the way it's designed and the story certainly makes it a much more enjoyable experience.

This said I LOVED Kill.Switch as well, so heh this was just an awesome game that I found quite easy to get in to.

Its like what Baldur's Gate is to Diablo. The games are very similar. And while the gameplay of one game may do it better than the other (I don't know yet because I haven't played GoW) the gameplay mechanics are still the same. There's really no reason to be excited over the gameplay IMO. I remember when Kill.Switch was first coming out the blindfire element was a huge cool thing. That's why I think GoW is getting a lot of fluff attention.

Cool, but honestly almost useless.
Completed the game on hard (second time through) without using blind-fire even once. It's easier to lure them out by thinking your dead and then taking them out with pin-point precision.

Especially in the later levels, as ammo was a very rare and valuable resource.

Dude. Seriously, if you haven't played it then that's a little bit biased I haven't played Killzone, so is it fair for me to say that it's nothing more than a clone of Doom? After all, they're both FPS' right?

Gears of War rules! Except when you are running away from something and he just randomly goes into cover and that something (a berserker) kills you right out. Other than that its awesome!

Finished it, excellent game.. Decent ending i suppose. While i personally think the dialog could've used some extra work(learning a little bit more about each of the characterss past) i think they did an incredible job of bringing the gameplay, graphics and control all together to form a -near- perfect game.

PS - Saw Jeku online the other day playing on -casual-(Wimp)... I highly recommend starting to play this game on hardcore right from the start. Playing it on easy will make the game fly by faster than most would think.. Also, just to let you know.. Beating the acts on hardcore unlocks both the hardcore and the casual achievements(double dipping baby!) so it ends up being more worth it!

No its not biased. Its observation. I don't care for Kill.Switch, I'm saying the gameplay mechanics by looking at it have been done before. Getting overly excited about GoW's gameplay because of ignorance is biased. It may do it better, but its not new or groundbreaking.

Killzone and Doom are nothing alike. They're in the same genre, but they don't play the same.

Gears isnt a clone of any other game.. Of course you can find elements of things that have come from other games but it's certainly not the -same- as any other game out there.

It's like saying geometry wars is a clone of mutant storm reloaded. That's just totally false.. While some of the mechanics are similar, gameplay is completely different.

a) I didn't actually agree with GoW being a clone. So the console remark is irrelevant

b) I was talking about the games industry as a whole, not just consoles

c) When I say "clone" I suppose I don't actual mean "clone" ; what I meant is that games these days simply imitate each other constantly, that it is extremely difficult to find a game that isn't "like [whatever]".

I know that innovative game design is a 'baby steps' type thing, and that the industry can't alienate its audience - it also sticks to what it knows to be profitable. But games these days are so similar (at least, those in the same genre group) - its been ages since I've seen a truly original bunch of games; and quite literally, the game industry is boring me to tears

Couldn't agree more. In fact I had recently sworn of playing all 3rd person shooter games, as they have all severely bored me. However after playing Gears of War at work, I realized that the story and the varied gameplay (and not to mention the linear one-player missions) were amazing. I fully believe GOW is to 3rd person shooters as Halo is to FPS' (on console of course). Just the absolute craziness of some of the levels, and the jaw-dropping scenery is a must for anyone with a decent TV and sound system.

But it will most likely be one of the last 3rd person, and platformer game I ever play again. Just been concentrating on story-driven FPS' and turn-based/RTS' now.

Usually I'd say that's true.
I mean Half-Life 2 plays quite differently to Doom 3 despite them being basically identical in gameplay design.

This said GOW and K.S are actually literally identical in gameplay... it's like an Xbox360 version of a Playstation 2 game. The controller itself is what provides the main difference to the gameplay mechanics as well as the far more action-based gameplay rather than forcing tactics.

I'm not saying that this means you can run in all guns blazing and expect to survive, but Kill.Switch definately forced tactics on you rather than constantly just trying to find the nearest cover.
Especially as honestly Kill.Switch had far better enemy AI which worked in groups.. the Locust just seem to either hide and fire; or run at you. They don't seem to try to flank you, or con you out of hiding. Makes it more of an arcade pick-up'n'play experience then the heavily story-based game it tries to be.

I felt the same about Half-Life 2, because the story and game often feel quite removed. Halo 2 really suffered from this badly. It's like you play the game and when you do something good you're rewarded with more story.

They don't feel as different games as you would've hoped, however I think the production value and overall quality that Gears of War presents the game with makes it far better than Kill.Switch.

Plus a story that doesn't confuse the player rather than help. I played most of Kill.Switch JUST to understand the whole dream before you break the mind control. Still the game itself is excellent in it's own right.

I fail to see how HL2 and D3 are 'basically identical' in gameplay design.

For starters, HL2 is based heavily on it's physics and drivable vehicles, but even ignoring that their basic gameplay is staggeringly different.

D3 is claustrophobia, tight etc, whereas a lot of HL2's battle are wide open.

And the fact that a massive part of HL2 is your allies, and developing them as characters...

Plus the fact that HL2 ROCKS and D3 SUCKS.

'basically identical' they aint.

Yah, I don't know what you're on about either, Raven. Doom 3 and HL2 couldn't be *more* different. I would say Doom 3 and Quake 4 are very similar, mind you.

Gears of War is truly the next gen game I was looking for when I bought my 360. Splinter Cell was disappointing (I sold it the next day after I bought it, actually), and Call of Duty 2 is getting a bit old now. But GOW is finally the game the 360 and PS3 is supposed to have. Perhaps a perfect combo of gameplay and next-gen engine feel. Brilliant!

I'm not going to get in to another HL2vsD3 debate, just felt the vehicles were a boring and pointless way of solving a few continuity issues. Also felt that due to the number of REAL puzzles that involved the physics engine that there was never really a need to add the ZPG. In-fact I only used it when I needed to, and the rest of the time my Pistol and SMG did the most work.

When you take them out of the equasion both games end up being very linear, close-quarter, minimal story-driven FPS games with the exact same control system.

Well anyhow...

Although I agree it has the next-generation look, it's not the first that has made me feel the 360 was worth the price-tag.
imo Kameo and Ninty-Nine Nights both do that far better.

Do think that Gears of War is the first to really set the next-gen ball rolling. In the next few months, Halo 3, Forza 2, Fable 2, etc. Definately looking forward to some of the games just on the horizon.

That said there's no doubt that GOW is by far one of the most beautiful games on ANY platform currently and will be for the next few months.

Even though I'm of those guy who say graphics aren't that important, I'd have to say Gears of War looks like an amazing game. It's seems like it's a great experience.

I think people really misunderstand the whole graphics issue though. It's not that quality graphics aren't important. If your game looks ugly or can't do as much because of bad graphics, that's bad. It will take away from the suspension of disbelief, which is what's really important in a game. However, things like the sweat on the back of the character aren't going to pull you in if the gameplay or the story is awful.

I'm inclined to agree with Chris K that I don't want gameplay shoved down my throat. It really bothers me that people like ubisoft decided to make Rayman 4 into a bunch of mini games rather than a full fledged platformer that found a really immersive way to do things with the wii mote. I LIKE the rayman platformers. Rayman 2 is one of my favorite games. It has a great story, style, sound, and gameplay. It's totally different than everything else on the market, and quite frankly the bunnies just don't seem to fit from the most recent vids. In the e3 one they looked great and like part of the rayman universe, but now...

I'm looking forward to when people get used to the wii, and we can settle down with some games that are about more than just the amazing controller. That's what will make zelda so great. It USES the controller, and is not made to show it off.

Edit: Can't wait til fable 2 comes out for the pc. Hopefuly it won't take as long to cross over this time.

So Raven's argument is basically, 'yeah, but if you ignore everything that makes them different, they're pretty much the same'.

Wait, actually he's right - if you just put it on a low resolution, then delete all the levels, and paint all the textures black then just uninstall them both and smash up your PC, and then just chuck away everything else you own, you're basically gonna being sitting naked in a bare room with two DVDs; then if you look at them both from the shiny side, then it's pretty hard to distinguish between them.

Seriously, if you can't notice the differences between HL2 and D3, you don't know much about game design.

As Jeku said, given that they are the same genre, they couldn't be more different.

I think that was intended as a generalisation, rather than a specific example - e.g. mouse look-esque look system and general movement controls

But all FPS's have those controls! Hell, so does Max Payne.

It's not really a valid piece of evidence for saying that HL2 and D3 are basically identical, is it?

When you're NOT driving around a very limited set course in a hovercraft or buggy, and actually playing ya know an FPS game the worlds were very cramped and limited.

While the ZPG was an interesting add-on, seriously what do you use more for actually killing the enemies.. you're ZPG or SMG?

Once you take away the fluff that either you *have* to do because the developer believed that driving down the coast at 50mph for 20-30minutes was a good idea in a poor vehicle physics engine... and the ZPG that's honestly only any worth when you have to get in to a new section which requires you to move something you normally wouldn't be able to.

The games then end up being closed in, with enemies constantly swarming you in ever increasing numbers with ever increasing armour and deadlier weapons... along with bigger enemies noting bosses.

To get through each area you either by navigating the level, or by completeing a puzzle often based on logic or physics.

That's true for both games. Just because you can't personally see that doesn't mean it isn't true.

Hell they both use the same tactic of throwing a randomly appearing monster ... in Doom 3 cause of the darkness it causes a scare, but in Half-Life 2 it means you loose health for no reason other than the developers felt it would add difficulty.

Find me an example of these in Doom 3:
- Drivable vehicles
- Enemy vehicles
- Commanding a squad (Rebels and Ant Lions)
- Many NPC allies
- Close, developed NP ally characters (Alyx etc.)
- Wide open fields
- Open street fights
- Physics based puzzles
- Sniping

Also, you say that the gravity gun is not needed... have you actually played HL2 all the way through???

Let's assume for a moment that what you wrote there was an actual sentence... YOU GET THROUGH EACH AREA BY NAVIGATING THE LEVEL?!?

So we can basically say that Mario 64 is also identical to Doom 3.

Ridiculous.

in the UK, it's released this friday (17th Nov 06) and hell, Im gonna make sure i'll be there that day to pick it up!!!!!

Just for note, it's the Collectors Edition that they're giving away in the UK for people who Pre-order only.
