I really, really, vividly remember reading a preview of a game I am 90% sure was called Good & Evil, in PC Gamer in about 1998.

I can picture one screenshot in particular, which was of a boat in a harbour, with some people on it. The camera was high and far out like an RTS. The game was 3D.

I think there was also a screenshot of some cows grazing in a field.

I think that game was an RPG but I can't be sure.

I have a weird feeling that this was just a very early example of what became Black & White. Certainly the graphics were similiar (though these were worse), and the names are suspiciously close.

Does anyone know anything about this game? It had a multi page preview in PC Gamer, and it was tipped to be a revolutionary game - it can't have just disappeared!!

Did it turn into Black & White?

Yay! I found it!!

It wasn't Black & White, it did just disappear.

It was designed by Ron Gilbert!

There's some info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Gilbert

I'll try and dig up some stuff.

It's a bit sad really, Gilbert was a f**king legend, and Good & Evil was his Magnus Opus, but it never got finished, his companies died during production

Definitely a legend, Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion are pure genius.

Well it took some digging, but I managed to find a screenshot!

Can you see why I thought it turned into Black and White?

It looks somewhat like the gameplay style of Black & White, but deffenitly too cartoony to actually be the game.

Cocacola and Pepsi aren't that differnt. Deal with it.

There's an awesome article here about what went wrong at Cavedog after Total Annihilation:

It's a very good read, if a bit depressing.
