Has anyone set up an XAMPP server on windows before? If so do you know how to add a domain to your XAMPP server?
Thanks,
Alex

Well i have a XAMPP server on my windows, and if u want to add a website pages like "index.php" and stuff like that then just throw in the htdocs folder in your XAMPP dir.
if thats not what u wanted to do then just explain better "domain" (i didnt really understood that although my dictionary lol)

Thanks, Jack lol
But is there any one that knows how to add a propper domain without using anyone else's services?

I have got a domain, but the only option is to change the name servers, do i need to setup a name server then? If so does anyone know how?

Thanks,
Alex

no you cannot host your own domain, you need to regester it with a hosting company which can then redirect the domain to another domain, or an ip address. you want the latter.
for sub domains you will need to have a dns (domain name server) running on your network, probably the web serving computer.
if you are happy to just have www.ydomain.com link to your web server then there is no need for a local dns, just run the web server as you are and tell the hosting company to link to your ip address.

if you want sub domains say so and can someone else here please help !hi! with setting that up because i don't have a clue

AMD athlon 64 3000+, 1GB ddr400, 400GB total hdd, ati radeon x700pro 256mb (pci-e) 17" tft(@1280x1024).

Its nowhere near as easy as it sounds.

Trust me - its worth paying a few pounds a year for a domain. I use 123reg - very good company imo.

I agree. Setting up a DNS server is a tricky and complicated business requiring a machine which is always on (and always patched). I use Linux for the DNS servers I look after, which I find easier than Windows but can still be a pain in the butt. Especially when big changes can take 24 hours to propergate and work their way around ISP's DNS's.
You are much better off just paying a few pounds and having it all looked after by someone else. You should get a nice easy interface to change IP addresses, MX records (for email), add subdomains and mess to your hearts content. Most also offer invisible frame redirection and mail forwarding too which can be handy.

My domain names are setup like this, (being on a dynamic IP that resets about once a week).

No-ip for nameservers (nameserver1.no-ip.info, nameserver2.no-ip.info) - using the dynamic update client on the server to keep it up to date. Point the nameserver details of the domain to these no-ip domain names.

DNS servers on Windows Server 2003 on the same IP as the nameservers are pointing to.

Fairly simple really, just need to wait 72 hours for the nameservers to update and the changes to propagate.

Hi - you need to learn that very little in this world is free with no catch.

There is a free service from no-ip.com but it means you have to use one of their names (like mysite.no-ip.com).

If you want your own domain hosted - seriously, just go to 123-reg.co.uk and pay them £2.59 of your shiny pocket money per year and you have yourself a domain name that's hosted for you. All you need to do is log into it and configure the dns settings.
