Yesterday morning I updated my system to the latest DX Runtimes (Oct 2006) and I updated my nVidia 6800 pci-e card to the latest drivers (9.1.4.7). Everything was fine with the machine, tested DGDK.NET, played video games into the wee hours, etc - no problems.

This morning I was using media player, and I noticed that when playing video the color was all whacked out. Some colors look fine in the scene while others (like skin tones etc) looked all red. If I adjusted the brightness up the reds turn to purples wtf? This happens when running MP itself, and when using it as an embedded control in an application.

Everything on the machine is up to date, and I have never seen this problem before. Has anyone encountered a similar issue, and if so, how was it resolved?

Machine spec:
Intel P4 3.2 Ghz LGA775
Asus p5-GD4 Deluxe mobo
1 gig ddr 533 ram
twin SATA 80 gig WD hdds
nVida 6800 Ultra 256 PCI-Express 16x
Win XP Pro

thanks in advance for any help

Been fiddlin' with the colour settings ? Hue, saturation, brightness and/or contrast ? Might be worth settings those back to the default if they have been changed.

Visit my web site for real bangin' stuff. Word.

no settings have changed in MP or in the nvidia control panel, or with the monitor, and everything else is fine, outside of mp

In which case it might be worth re-installing your graphics drivers - or perhaps downgrade one version.

try these steps from the MS site

Quote: "
Why is my video discolored or has colored lines running through it?
A variety of issues can cause color to go bad in Windows Media Player. To troubleshoot possible causes, do the following:

Check for video-card driver updates from the maker of your video card.

Check for Microsoft DirectX updates by scanning for updates on the Windows Update Web site.

Try a different acceleration setting for your video hardware:
1.
In Windows Media Player, click the Tools menu, and then click Options.
2.
On the Performance tab, in the Video acceleration area, drag the slider to None to use basic video-acceleration settings that work with most video hardware. For some video hardware, you must do the opposite (drag the slider to Full) to correct the problem.

Adjust video settings to default values:
1.
Click Now Playing.
2.
On the View menu, point to Enhancements, and then click Video Settings.
3.
In the Enhancements pane, above the slider controls, click Reset.
If the video plays back normally at first, but then becomes discolored (or disappears entirely), see the question, "Why can't I see the video when I'm playing a video file?" in the Media Advice archive.

thanks, I just found this and it sorted it:

If you find that video disappears or turns a different color, turn off video overlays by doing the following:

1.
In Windows Media Player, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.

2.
Click the Advanced button.

3.
In the Video Acceleration area, clear the Use overlays check box.

If the problem continues, try turning off the video mixing renderer (VMR) by clearing the Use video mixing renderer check box, located just above the Use overlays check box.
"

turned off the overlays tick box and the video colors returned to normal.
Probably something in the new vid drivers caused a problem.
Thanks

Mate, I had almost the exact same issue. My vids were all well dark after updating to the newest NVidia driver, but after playing the vids for about 1/10th of the length, it switched to the correct brightness again, and then I could restart the vid and it'd be all fine. Having just read this post switching off Overlays fixed my problem too. Bizarre stuff.
