Message from C.H.I.M.P.S
(Campaign for Human ImProvement and Serenity)

It is with great happiness that we can convey that the newest member of this esteemed organisation (Nicholas Kingsley) has passed all required tests to become a full CHIMP – these tests include the desire to use alternative operating systems to Winsnooze, and the means, ability and desire to purchase multiple non-Winbooze computers – in this case several iMac machines.

It also defines a new and exciting avenue for programming development. No longer shackled to Microsnot's Visual Studio, other development systems can now be used, like XCode 2 and later on, version 3. And other programming delights.

Alas, it also comes at a price (although not a personal one) : All home C development using Microshaft's Visual Studio and GSDK will be stopped, abandoned and generally forgotten about... The idea is that later on, all backup code will be released for public effification and general consumption (but not internally).

The reasons for a better computing experience are many and varied, but include :

A) Being too cheap to buy new anti-virus programs, and having no real desire to re-purchase more decent defragging programs.
B) Not agree with Microscew's vision of Vista
C) The general feeling that the GSDK has been taking as far as possible, with the result that it is too tired to find its way back to good ol' Blighty.

We have been asked to say that the past 3 or 4 years have been interesting, and no doubt exciting as well, but now there is a new path to tread – and its Apple flavoured.

Signed

Clyde

AKA

Nicholas

I was thinking of S.T.U.P.I.D or C.H.U.M.P.S...

Quote: "It would be a boring place if we lose one of our most sarcastic members"

Whilst totally true, these very forums will have to get used to the absence of my superior knowledge, wit and of course, sarcasm.

One (of many) things that is nice with iMacs, is that every development program is included - programming - included; java - ditto; web development - oh yes. Plus it comes with a remote control too.

Native games are good too. Whilst I've only tried the Wingnuts 2 demo, that its pretty impressive...

As you can tell, I'm quite impressed with OS X

Quote: "Wheres he going...?"

Mac development, my dear chap.

Quote: "No mod?"

Not now...

Quote: "Sacked for Gross Misconduct? O! The Scandal :S"

No change of that.

I've updated my website (http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~nichkk) accordingly too. Its not finished, but its fairly close...

good luck with your change in digital lifestyle.
If i can be the devils advocate, its nice to know both operating systems.
It pays good money to know both.
Perhaps Xcode 1/2/3 has really made an impression on you.

One question: why? Is there that much demand for Mac software compared to Windows software? Or is it mainly just a break for you.

Aside by replying by saying : "Why not?", I felt it was time to start developing on a totally new operating system. I had been planning it for the past year, and originally was going to start changing computers next year. Unfortunately, a somewhat dodgy laptop brought it forward a few months...

I could answer by giving you the stats on how many people own Macs as opposed to Windows PCs for one thing. If you're fine with having around 10% of computer users being able to enjoy your software, then all the power to you.

If I were to develop on Mac, I would do it as a port of an existing PC game, or develop it alongside. But that's me

So that means the true end of the unofficial convention. And you´re not a mod. Why not? You still visit the forums. It stills looks strange seeing the floppy disc without a mod badge. I kept confusing you with a n00b. You´re come back to the dark side. They always come back. Mahahahahaha.
Seriously. Thanks for all the DGDK and DB help you´ve given over the years.

Oh yes, indeedly doo.

Quote: "And you´re not a mod. Why not?"

Because, there's no point, because...

Quote: "You still visit the forums"

..only will for a short while, whilst I reply to my fans...

Quote: "Seriously. Thanks for all the DGDK and DB help you´ve given over the years."

No problem. I'll probably make the source code of the GSDK programs availiable towards the end of the year - or maybe much sooner, once I've stuck it on a CD

I've no problem with it... More room to get programs noticed...

@Happy Dude - I'd genuinely be interested in what websites/forums/books/other learning resources you use/have used to get to grips with xcode and development on the mac. I've been meaning to try and settle into devving on my ibook for months now (because, as you say, more room to get noticed) but have never done much about it.

Good luck, may you make many a mac app.

It would appear I've been bitten by the coding bug yet again...

The on-line Apple API help files are pretty good, although, for the time being anyway, I'll be taking the slightly easier route and using BlitzMax. I was hoping PureBasic would be Intel compatiable, but unfortunately its not.

Just out of interest, why don't you simply develop with something that allow you to support Windows as well as Mac?

E.g. an engine such as Ogre3d

Its quite a pain! And people say DBPro's help files are poor, you should see BlitzMax.

However, I think I'm getting the hang of it - the conversion of my Mappy plug-in is, going okay so far

It's all fine until you come home to find your Mac in bed with your wife, then you'll be back!.

There's certainly scope for indi game creation on the mac, and with such little choice a decent shareware title can do very well, wheras the PC has a much tougher time of shifting shareware. Good luck, hope you make some cool games for the mac, it sorely needs them.
