I have a question about Microsoft Virtual PC, I have 512MB RAM installed on my computer, but I want 1GB RAM on VPC, is there a way to use my hard drive or something instead of my real RAM for the VPC RAM?

If you've only got 512MB, then you're going to be swapping like crazy just running Virtual PC anyway. Setting the VPC memory higher than actual system memory is asking for performance akin to a snail in a tar pit.

I know I should have more, but I just wish I could use hard drive space as virtual RAM and if I can I wish I knew how.

Memory can't be shared either, each virtual machine must own the memory you allocate to it. And remember, you're already running the base installation, which requires a minimum of 256 MB.

Do you know of any virtual machine emulator--or whatever they are called--that will allow me to use Hard Drive space for virtual RAM?

You do know that swapping is effectively the system using your hard drive as RAM, don't you?

I've no experience in using a virtualised machine, but I suspect that you are going to have the problems that both Rich & BatVink have suggested.

I have none either but my friend suggested running Vista on a virtual machine instead of overwriting windows.

you shouldn't consider running a virtual pc with more memory allocated than that is available on the host pc. It just doesn't work - things grind to a halt, and ultimately, you're going to get worse performance on both host and virtual machine than if you used less ram. If you're thinking of running Vista on a virtual machine, I'd get another 512mb stick of RAM, to bring the total in your host PC to 1GB and allocating 512mb to the virtual machine.

An even better suggestion would be to dual boot by using two partitions, you're not going to get anything near the intended experience with Vista running in a virtual machine than if you ran it outside a virtual machine - nothing to stop you trying though, I've got longhorn server running in a virtual machine now to test it out.

eeeeeeeeeeeee. I'm going to get the admin to ban you. Leave, leave now before the admin bans you.

Hey CR, long time no see. Been a while since we've chatted on IRC
. [Envy my poetic skillz]

To keep this thread on topic mind, has anyone tried sharing hardware on vmware? Apparently, certain devices such as wireless network interfaces can be accessed from the client - I don't have a recent version of vmware to test this out as I tend to use Virtual PC & Virtual Server now. I know that network connections can be setup between the host and vitual machine, but controlling the hwardware directly is quite impressive.

Not very much. In pound sterling, I got a stick of 1GB DDR400 for £52
