For an AIM client I'm writing. The chat window will allow multiple buddies in a single window.
Would you guys prefer to use the common tabs? Or a simple, more easily navigated list as shown in the second picture?

Tabs would be more convenient for fewer people, but the navigated list would be better for a larger amount of people, so I'm not sure but I'd go with the navigated list.

it would be nice to see at a glance whos online and connected so i suggest the latter.
i use a multi IM called fire. it has separate windows, one falldown is its not so obvious sometimes who your talking to, ie if you have 3 bobs in your list of friends highlighting the email and details isnt so inuitive.

The list. But it should highlight who you're talking to like it does in the tabs. Out of curiosity, what's it coded in?

It would appear I've been bitten by the coding bug yet again...

Why not make it so the user can change the gui?

its java and it will support whichever look n' feel themes you have installed. I may try to do a skinnable window later on.

Have you tried Adium? That's what I prefer to use on Mac.

I use Adium - its really nice. I like it when you put the buddy list into a kind of small floating list. Works nice (I'll try to get a screenshot later).

I prefer the tabs screenshot above.
