Im not saying Im one of the "popular" people in my high school, but I pretty much know everyone and everyone knows me. So, I got together with some of the more well-known people from the school (jocks mainly) and tried out a plan of mine at the school assembly we had that afternoon. Im pretty sure this is the case in most high schools, where everyone keeps talking in the auditorium while the principle or whoever is up at the front telling everyone to be quiet and act their age, so, as predicted this happened in the assembly we had for rememberence day. The principle had been yelling at everyone to shut up for 5 minutes, with no luck. I had gotten the more popular people to sit close to each other, then, I told them to just be quiet for like 10 seconds and see what happens.

The popular kids shut up, like 8 of them, shortly after, the people next to the popular kids shut up. It kept on repeating, creating a ripple outwards from the popular kids of kids going "oh no, the popular people are quiet, lets shut up!". In less than 3 minutes almost the entire auditorium was silent, not thanks to the principle as she left while I did my experiment to go get the vp to try and settle the kids down.

xD, it really shows you who the followers are. It was so freaky, I made sure to stand at the back of the audi so I could see what happened and it was really like a ripple of quietness spreading outwards.

at my school there aren't really clicks, most people just get along, at least in my classes (honors, in other words-nerds), the regular classes I think are more "clicky", because they do have "popular" people, but I think most people still get along .

Man I hate all the little "prep" groups in my school. They all think they are the best damn thing on the face of the earth. And they make fun of my best friend which really pisses me off.

Everybody gets along? In my school that's unheard of, load of wiggers and wanna-be gangsters, there's only 90-100 kids that aren't like that.

We really only have a few preps, which is pretty weird.

Gil Galvanti - isn't it clique?

There's definitely popular kids at my school. Its hard to believe since its a private school with very high academic expectations, you would expect everyone to be considered a nerd...but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I'm definitely not in the popular group. I'm too "different" (because I program, am very computer competent, crap like that) for those closed-minded "popular" people. I despise that "popular" thing, especially when someone considers them self popular (sorry everyone who just said they're popular ).

Quote: "Man I hate all the little "prep" groups in my school. They all think they are the best damn thing on the face of the earth. And they make fun of my best friend which really pisses me off."

Yeah, they annoy me too. Its pretty much 20% of the girls and one boy that think that of themselves. And then 20% of the boys are the type that think they have so much skills and everything (mostly visible during gym and physical education classes like that). The chavs, I believe.

RUCCUS - lol...that's funny...and kind of annoying. They listen to the 'popular' people but not the faculty/staff/other important adults.

Now that I'm done degrading 60% of all students at schools and colleges, I need to get back to work on my homework

UFO, i know how you feel... since im 1 of very few programmers in my school, people pick on me. but the really funny thing was when i made a program on my calculator that put random dots on the screen(very, very simple) and a lot of people were like "woah! howd u do that!?" i was thinking "are you serious?" but i said "magic" and they're like: "no, seriously", so i said "i just got skillz"

@UFO and dude guy: Well, not everyone get's along perfectly, I'm just saying that we don't have as many "cliques", closed to outsiders, shunning all others, as is often stereotyped in high school . We don't really have the stereotypical jocks, nerds, skaters, gothics, preps, etc., and those that resemble the groups (ie: an athlete) tends to get along with the other groups .

I know pretty much everyone in my school, well over 2600 kids I go around to all the groups of people and mingle. Someone whos in my situation will realize that the "popular" kids are really just like most of the other people except sometimes they may exert a few different characterstics, and if you come across as friendly they usually never turn people down. At least I've never had a problem with it.

Most of the 'popular' kids from my school are in the army now, or jail, there's no greater irony than the way things invert just as soon as you leave school - smart kids might go to university, where being smart is not treated like a social disease.

I couldn't wait to leave high school (at 16) and move onto sixth form college (17 - 18 years). Everyone at Sixth form wanted to be there and so lessons were much more productive.

I was always in the "middle group" at school in terms of popularity, and it's the best place to be. You can hang out with the popular kids, you can hang out with the geeky kids, there is no peer pressure to do all the cool things, and there is no bullying for being the unpopular kids.

Much like Van said, the popular kids are now wasters (the ones that I still know), or leading very average lives. Most of the geeky kids are now in high paid jobs, earning the casheesh. The irony of how it all flips round. Oh, and the most popular boy with all the women is now gay. School life is not a sign of things to come ... only how well you do in class .... funnily enough!!!

I'm with Van B. The popular people are usually popular for being rebellious to the point of delinquency.

When you leave school, you'll see it flip instantly - the delinquents won't get or be able to hold down a job, whilst the more trustworthy will get opportunities and respect they will appreciate.

Everyone in school always knew me, but that was because I was the "foreign kid". Usually hung out in groups of 2 or 3, never very popular, until I went to college, where I got on with nearly everyone. Suprising how much a little maturity and shared interests can do

Sixth Form is fantastic. You spend the first three months in the nearest McDonald's, the next month laying down commonroom-wide rules for Black Jack, and then play it up until March which is when you suddenly realise you better actually do some work!

I think that Popular-ness is a real thing. The thing is that people confuse "cool" and "popular". Cool is when people are drawn to you because of who you are. Popular is when people like you in general. There are popular cool kids, but being popular doesn't mean your cool and visa versa. I'd consider myself cool, but not popular, I have lots of freinds and know just about everyone. I'm just not "popular" because I kinda you know said an assortment of pretty sexist/egotistical remarks to one of the head cheerleader or something.

I think it's more if your egotistical and show it that gets people to notice you (well girls at least).

The whole teens period is a horrible stage in life if you think about it, few people are more discrimination/hurtful than teenagers. You wear white socks? Faggot! You're overweight? Fatso! You're underweight? Anorexic!
Little things like that just piss me off, because if it's done consistently it's the same thing as bullying. In what you call 6th form that kinda reduces, and is 90% gone in College(or Uni as you brits call it)

In the uk we have universities, which are just like your colleges, but we also have colleges, which are like crap universities and have no accomodation on site, often people go to college instead of staying on at school, or do short courses in college to help them get a job.

In Canada (and Im guessing America), College is just like University, just a bit crappier, but college usually specializes in certain things. Like, astronaut college, where as Uni is more broadened, like the arts or computer technologies.

In Canada a college is a school that offers only the first 2 years of a degree (generally a diploma). A University offers you 4+ years for the different degrees. They are very different.

Grammer schools and private schools (or 'public schools' as they are confusingly named), go all the way up to university.

Most state schools stop at GCSE, then you have to years at college where you do your A Levels, then you go to university.

So basically a lot of schools people drop out and don't do A Levels, so they have colleges to fill the gap.

I was the leader of the weirdos. After school was all over I'd meet all kinds of people that didn't want to have anything to do with me when we were going to school... but they were always acting like "Hey! How ya doing?"... almost like we were best friends in high school.

I liked being leader of the weirdos because I didn't want to be plastic like the rest of them. I just did what I wanted and forget if it looks "cool" or not.

Well when I went to Uni (1991) we called a Uni a "college". As in "I'm going to college". There was also the sub-standard colleges which were called "Polys". Heh... Although I think they are all now called Universities to not upset the clever chavs. But, after I left school (16 for me not 18) I went to a BTEC college, which is like a low grade Poly, enabling you to get the marks to get into Uni or Poly. So effectively you graduated from college to go into either college or college (or sniff glue if you failed). Heh This was mainly because I came from the back of beyond and A-levels involved going to the actual BTEC college one third of the time to do computers, whereas BTEC meant computers 24/7 essentially. I was a total geek in those days...

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing
