Well first off let me say this. I am in no way an Apple lover. I hate Macintosh with a strong passion. I also blame Steve Jobs for world hunger. With that out of the way, I actually do like the iPod Video model and was thinking about getting one because I need a good MP3 player and I want to watch videos when I travel, etc.

Have any of you had experience, or own, an iPod? Are they worth my buy? Opinions? Thanks.

I'd say go for it, but buy a hard case, my screen broke and it's extremely hard to navigate.

you should go to a store and compare the current players on the market.
your ideals of a company causing world hunger are seriously malformed.
usually comments like yours about companies stem from ignorance.

theres no point in trying to persuade you to choose A over B.

however you might not like the alternative ZUNE, as it has serious copy protection issues when it comes to playing anything you want on your player.

Visit your local store and test them for yourself, have a go at each one and make a decision from there. if your too far away from a store visit sites with reviews and read the pros and cons of the products your interested in.

i have two ipods BW 40gig and photo 40gig, both were a tax deduction as they also double up as a hard drive for backup purposes and the photo ipod allows me to demonstrate images to clients in their board rooms or media station.

I got an Iriver H10 20GB which is very nice, and has excellent sound and build quality. Even the free headphones it came with were sennheiser ones. My brother has an ipod video and I can honestly say the sound quality on the iriver is much better. Also the iriver is very stable whereas my brother has to repeatedly reset his and bring it back to the store etc. Only complaint is that mine is slightly on the thick size compared to the new ipods and it doesn't play movies...

Yeah I would really like one with a lot of space that plays movies. So iPod is my best choice right now.

For the love of all that is good, do *not* buy an iPod. They are overpriced, and generally lack features that other comparable (and cheaper) products have for the same or cheaper prices.

The iPod is DRM'ed to high heaven, so you will not have a lot of freedom with audio types. My RCA Lyros brick MP3 player is still great after all these years, and when I bought it in 2003, its 20GB hard drive was nothing to laugh at (plus it was a good $100-150 cheaper than the iPod that had a smaller hard drive.

iPod is all about brand.

I have an iRiver H220 - 20 gigs of space, can handle mp3/ogg/wma, can play .avi movies (provided that they're formatted properly), can display jpg photos, can record voice memos with a built in mic, and best of all, comes in a rather sexy looking black finish. It's considerably thicker than an ipod, and it doesn't have a jog wheel, but I like it

I have an iRiver H10, and personally, the vertical scroll pad makes a lot more sense than the iPod's crappy wheel thing.

I heard somewhere that the wheel on the iPod can cause problems in your hand because of the motion you do with your thumb. Don't if it's true, but from what I've read, the iriver seems to be rivaling the iPod right now.

I had a 4gb ipod mini, came free after rebate with my laptop last year. I sold it to a friend for $100 cause I was never really gonna use it. They're nice if you ride a bus or walk a lot, but I'm either in my car or at a computer so I didn't really need it.
Though, I do want a shuffle cause its smaller and would be less likely to break while I skate.

I don't think any of these MP3 players on the market are worth the price they charge. They don't even play ogg vorbis!

I have an ipod. In a word, they suck. The battery for mine only lasted about a year and I barely used it. The wheels keeps getting stuck when I push it it in. I agree get an iriver.

I don't like Macs much either, I have a Mac Book Pro and Mac Mini G5 for band recording, and for Windows too, but otherwise I have supported Microsoft more the Apple. But--- I have all the new iPods. Shuffle, Nano, and Video. I have had nothing but good expiriences from them. I would reccomend getting the 55h battery extender. Nice case and adds 55 hour battery life, wich is great for watching full movies on planes, etc.

I mean, you just have to look at the (millions) of complaints about the software breaking to realise that iTunes is a seriously buggy, poorly written pile of poop.

I had a creative zen touch for a good few years and it was great (it died this week, hopefully it's just the battery but I get the feeling it's well and truly biggered).

My brother's got an ipod video and he seems happy with it, watches loads of ripped dvd's on it. I think it's definatley worth looking around for alternatives though. The customer reviews on amazon are a good start.

It would appear I've been bitten by the coding bug yet again...

Well last night I was seriously thinking about getting a Creative Zen Video/MP3 player but here's the problem: They don't support Quicktime. All of my really high quality movies I want to watch while I'm traveling are all Quicktime files.(Quicktime files have better quality anyway...)If I get a Creative player then I have to convert all my really good videos into AVI, WMV, etc. And that really ruins the quality IMO. Although Creative's do have longer battery life. So right now I'm still trying to figure out which I want to get. I still have 20 days until my birthday, so I have time to figure it out.

EDIT: Just found awesome Belkin extra battery life adapter for only $50 on Apple.com that adds 4 more hours of video and 14 more hours of music to your iPod when it dies. And you have "unlimited power because it runs off batteries that you just replace.

Takes about a nanosecond to get used to the wheel and it's miles better than any trackpad effort for scrolling through a list of songs because you essentially keep scrolling in one direction by continuingly circling. You don't need to leave the surface basically or use any other trackpad like tricks that you get with laptops that just don't feel as good.

I have a 60gb 5th Gen video iPod for a while now. Very nice and haven't had any problems yet. And the games aren't bad. Esp that Poker one. Addictive as crack...

Only downside I can think of is that they could do with updating the GUI a little. It's acceptable but there is an awful amount of white going on. A wallpaper option would be good, or if they took a few design tips from the OSX department would be nice...

There's no great advantage in having an iPod unless you love apples iTune's service. There are much cheaper alternatives out there, heck for the same sort of price you can go onto e-bay and grab an MP4 player which supports video playback as well as music, I just bought a 1 gig model with intergrated speaker, audio in jack, 4 games and of cause video playback for a little under £40. There 2Gb model was under £48, and the 4Gig model was under £60.

I lay upon my bed one bright clear night, and gazed upon the distant stars far above, then I thought... where the hell is my roof?

- 7.01 doesn't help
- 1.2 screws totally once installed
- Reverting the firmware from 1.2 will completely screw your iPod and leave it totally inoperable

That's the issue! I don't want to have to keep circling to go through my playlist (especially if it's very large). I can just keep my finger down on the lower part of one of these babies to auto-scroll through the whole list, or, I can move my finger up or down for a more refined scroll speed. All without the tiresome efforts of constant motion.

I have no trouble scrolling through hundreds of songs on meh 30gb video ipod, i think the speed increases the longer you scroll, like after 2 swirls it goes faster or something.

Ive heard somewhere and I kind of think its true, people look at ipods as a kind of jewlry in a way, theyre sleek and simple and imo are nice media players.

i would like to recomend a nano to a ipod witha harddrive, i havent really had any problems but the video ipods front is some kind of soft plastic and if you push down on it you can hear it scrape on the disc.. >_> not good, plus i heard flash memory mp3 players have better quality sound for some reason, and that new search function for the new ipods look nice.

just some thoughts.

Would you use the buttons attached to your TV over the ones on the TV Remote? Welcome to the real world, ease of use makes a HUGE difference. Hundreds of thousands of dollars go into the research for user experience design (although this encompasses both physical and software interaction) and it's considered one of the most important aspects of a products design.

Down here, Foxtel removed the 'Flip' button on their new version of digital, that one little feature generated an unprecedented number of complaints because users didn't want to have to re-enter their previous channel number. It's not about being 'lazy', it's about convenience.

Of course I'd use the circular interface if I had to, but I'm paying for choice, and I choose not to.

All comes down to personal preference if you ask me. Personally I love the iPod interface. Very nice. Just could do with some more customisable bits. Oh, and an album art browse view would be nice.

Originally I had an extremely small good looking Walkman which lasted for about 70 hours on a single battery. Lovely bit of kit, and in many ways superior to my iPod. Unfortuantly Sony have a habit of completely ignoring their MP3 players and bringing out totally different versions 3 months later. I'm not just talking about colour screens or memory sizes. No, totally different shapes and sizes. So basically the accessory market was practically non-existant. Forget any arm bands or cases for carrying it. You either wore it like a necklace or held it in your hand. Well annoying. And forget any nice integrated speaker systems. And firmware upgrades?

Now the Creative machines (and to a smaller extent the iRiver ones) are looking better for accessories (but still pale in comparison) and the Zune looks like it could be good (although a bit chubby and brown will only be fashionable for like a year - see the 70s). We shall see...

Oh, and iTunes? I just use it to organise my music. Never buy from that over expensive store (esp. in the UK). Even CD's are cheaper from a lot of online stores.

Wow....

Is a TV meant to be portable? No. The TV remote is a distance issue. But how is having to move your THUMB a few more times "harder"? "O MY GOD, 2 MORE INCHES!?!?!?!?" Yes I know companies spend a lot of money studying physical attributes of a thumb to make the best MP3 player, but big deal. I personally am not going to judge my opinion of an MP3 on thumb movement. I look at how well it's made, the features, and cost.

It's not even hard to move your thumb in a circle like the iPod.

@Kaurotu - You obviously don't know that repetitive movement can sometimes cause issues and pain. Tendonitis can be caused by repetitive movements with the mouse, so if you ramp up the mouse sensitivity in Windows you can reduce the stress on your wrist. I figure it's the same thing when they design the controls on these little MP3 players. No need to get hasty.

Bah, I've used computers for decades and program for a living. I think people who get those pains in their wrists either have weak bones, or just download way too much pr0n

Anyways I saw a Gadget show review a little while back and they rated the iPod as the fastest way to select songs. And I would laugh my t*ts off if someone really believed that iPods could cause much bigger finger pains than a rival MP3 player

Did see a little Creative MP3 player the other day and it does look quite a bit smaller than a Nano. Well, in every way except depth (always cubby looking). Very nice. Except very cheapy plasticy. Nah. My Sony was tiny but totally solid and metal. Very nice. Much better.

Well I think years of the same movement would cause damage but....whatever. I'm still getting what I want.

this is not really the place to ask a loaded question about this vs that. best thing to do is to go try the products in the stores. there is never a definitive answer to a product of this calibre.
My pods have paid for themselves when i pull it out at a meeting. some people hate them with a vengeance, some people love them. best to do sound research via product testing and compare results over websites. personally i like my white bars of soap and they have served me well.

Ah, but that's all iTunes 7. I stuck with 4.9 because I didn't like the gui changes and other small things. I did use the latest iTunes after a reformat and I surprised they actually managed to make iTunes run even slower! That's my only gripe with it, it runs too slow. My java clone should not be responding more quickly than theirs.

For goodness' sake people, get PDAs...
120 quid for a multi-purpose device that takes dirt cheap SD cards, and if the format is not supported you can just download a player for free. Movie compatibillity? Years old!


Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

I've never seen 60gb SD cards, especialy not as cheap as dirt.

I did. And videos do look pretty nice thanks very much. But as Torsten said I haven't seen any 60gb SD cards (or PDAs that support them). Plus sound quality isn't normally as good as dedicated MP3 players. Personally I mainly use my PDA for playing Day of the Tentacle. Nice...

Oh, and my newest phone is a Walkman effort. Pretty nice. And Sony have got a decent interface going for once (although controls are a bit pants with normal joypad effort). Will investigate further....

If you don't have a cell phone or an iPod, get an LG Chocolate. Very good phone with music support, and video with Vcast I belive.. I just havn't tried the video part on my phone yet.
