Has anyone on this forum been dianosed, or suspect they have Asperger Syndrome?

I lay upon my bed one bright clear night, and gazed upon the distant stars far above, then I thought... where the hell is my roof?

I know someone very well whos got it.

Quite a character I may add, though he gets away with things that he shouldnt, because he's "autistic".

Some of the things he does just because he can, not because its caused by his disease.

He likes radios and things from the 60's alot, but most of all he likes phones, all kinds. Takes them apart and carries a whole binder full of phone circuitry diagrams.

I knew one. He liked to blow things out of proportion and use his "disease" as an excuse to think everyone's out to get him.

Whiners.

Here we go again. I can see this turning ugly very quickly (just like the last one).

Just a warning, I'll lock this as soon as it gets out of hand.

Well, the reason I care is that I've been dianosed with the condition, and as I suspected their's a fair amount of misunderstanding surrounding it.

Obviously a couple of people here think that such people are very odd, this is often because social situations like class, a theater, walking down the street, or even going into shops is something that generates alot of anxiety. Some use antics, say strange things, and behave in odd ways to help distance themselves from strangers. I for instance, when overloaded and overstimulated used to talk about furry fish, and make up other non-sense phrases. These days I've trained myself simply to place my three fingers on my temple, be up front about why I'm doing it, and try to speed through any social situation as quickly as possible. Sometimes it's even hard to be around my own mother, which sounds aweful I know, but it's true.

Anyway, I've setup a website called assyco (ASperger SYndrome COmmunity), it's basically just a blank web site right now, but the focus will be on the forums which are up and running as I type. It's goal is to provide information, and tips from people who actually live with the Syndrome. I've Created three boards right now, Adult Asperger, Young Asperger, and 'Friends, Family and Supporters'. The names are fairly self evividant.

www.assyco.co.uk

Please let others know about the website, some might be interested, others might not, but hopefully it will give a little comfort being around like minded people, though often the Syndrome affects people in uniqe ways.

I have also been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.

Kenjar, there are actually some sites already with a lot of information about Asperger's Syndrome, for instance here, but good luck with what you're doing anyway.

Are you obsessed with me or something? Is it that you miss talking to me so badly that you must make comments about me at every given chance? You're just a troll on these forums, that's all you are.

No doubt, it'll probably be the common forum trolls this time.

You misunderstand, I'm not creating yet another information source, though there will eventually be articles about the syndrome uploaded, the whole point is to provide a place where people with Asperger Syndrome can meet and talk to others with simular problems, interests and mindsets. I intend to provide a wiki extention so people can publish their poetry, stories, articles on their own interests. It's not uncommon for such people as you and myself to express themselves via their writing. How better to learn about the condition, then to meet people who have to deal with it on a daily basis? I've developed hints and tricks to deal with certain situations, as I'm sure you have. I feel this is information worth sharing.

The misconceptions around this area are, in my opinion, generated by people who are too quick to auto-diagnose Asperger's. I'm not saying this in regard to the people here. What I'm saying is that some people decide they or their associates have the disorder, because it can be an easy excuse for lack of manners or social skills. Some parents are quick to blame their short-fallings in bringing their children up, on something that can be recognised as a medical condition.

So for the people who have been truly diagnosed, they are fighting against the perceptions brought about by people who auto-diagnose themselves or others as a quick excuse. So a quote like...

Quote: "I knew one. He liked to blow things out of proportion and use his "disease" as an excuse to think everyone's out to get him"

...is possibly a good example of this.

Ben: Why are you always so paranoid and assuming that people are talking about you?

I guarantee you that I simply don't care. Geez.

Well, because you are a good-for-nothing moron who trolls the forums and has a thing about me? I really don't know why you act like this, is it because I stopped coding your web sites for you? Because you for sure didn't make these stupid comments when I was doing that.

Now there's a very Aspergeric response! lol, sorry Ben not making fun of you, but it's the sort of thing I say sometimes.

Aikicat, I beg that you not take that to heart and please understand something. It's very common for someone with the syndrome to feel a little paranoid, I sure as hell know I do sometimes. I used to walk down the street thinking everyone was looking at me and talking about me. This is because I'd been made fun of in very public ways as I am sure Ben has. If you could do me a personal favour and not raise to the bait I'd be greatful. It's really this sort of misunderstanding on both sides that spawned the ASSYCO idea in the first place.

It's very hard for me to imagine what you think and feel as it is very hard for you to do the same for us. Neither side means any harm, but it's easy to quickly inflame things.

Ben if you don't mind backing down I'd also be grateful to you too, I'd rather not have this turn into a flame war, forcing moderators to lock this thread.

@Kenjar, Benjamin does not need you to make excuses on his behalf. He can handle Aikicat by himself.

I have heard of people having one or two symptoms and then saying "oh, I have asperger syndrome" and when I tell them its unlikely they seem to get all defensive about it. I don't care about having it but I don't like it when people make assumptions about it. Its a broad disorder which means that people that have it could behave very differently anyway.
